Classic Doctor Who: Season 1

I finally started to watch the classic Who episodes! 🙂 To be totally honest, I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to sit through it, only because of the quality (let’s not forget that the show is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary, so the very beginning is in black and white, with really poor quality…).

Just a few points on the season.

First, I understand that times were really (really really) different, television wise, and this was a kid’s show, which meant low budget, so some of the things are natural for the time… such as really poor continuity, fights that are clearly staged (so much, that the weapons don’t touch the other person), the running (OMG, the running in the first episode is just the worst thing ever), …

Second, is Susan a representant of how young women were perceived at the time? The character suffers from some poor quality writing. The girls spends all of her time screaming or crying (“Oh, Grandfather!”)… I know she has merits, but I just find her annoying!

Third, this should actually be called the Ian and Barbara Show! Why? Well, because for most of the first season, the two companions have more screen time than the Doctor!

Fourth, the Doctor! Wow, William Hartnell did an amazing job playing the Doctor. But it a very different Doctor. He’s old and frail, has to stop all the time to catch his breath. He’s not funny, or warm, or anything like that… although, as the series progresses, he becomes a little more “Human”. Also, during the first season, Ian is the “Hero” and the Doctor hardly ever saves the day!

Fifth, the TARDIS! How weird is that that the Doctor hardly ever mentions the TARDIS by her name? It’s always “my ship”, it’s just weird. Also, it’s nice that they mention the wardrobe and the places to sleep and what about that food machine? I guess they eventually found out that it didn’t work…

Doctor Who on Big Bang and Castle

It’s not exactly news when a show like The Big Bang Theory makes a Doctor Who reference. But when, on the same week, we have TBBT and Castle making DW references, it’s awesome!

Castle started this past week with a case of time-travelling – great episode by the way, loved how everything came together and we were left with the impression that Joshua Gomez really came from the future, with the coffee stained paper and the disappearing act… lovely! I wouldn’t be surprised if the reference came from Castle himself, as he’s a self proclaimed geek, but it was Esposito who did the put the Doctor in conservation: “What were you expecting Castle? Time travel device? Doctor Who’s sonic screwdriver?“.

The Big Bang Theory did it in the song that Howard sung to Bernadette – The Romance Resonance – “I’d be Doctor Who without the TARDIS“.

The Romance Resonance – “If I Didn’t Have You (Bernadette’s Song)”

The Big Bang Theory nailed it with their last episode, The Romance Resonance, which aired last thursday. It was such a funny episode and with an enormity of plots!

Howard and Bernadette

This is going to stay in my top 10 moments of the show. Howard writes and preforms a song for his wife, for the celebration of their first date anniversary and, remember when Howard was probably the last guy on Earth you would ever consider dating? Well, not after this one! The song was written by Kate Micucci, who plays Raj’s ex-girlfriend Lucy, and her Garfunkel & Oates writing partner Riki Lindhome.

If I didn’t have you, life would be blue
I’d be Doctor Who without the TARDIS
A candle without a wick, a Watson without a Crick
I’d be one of my outfits without a dick-ey

I’d be cheese without the mac,
Steve Jobs without the Wozniak
I’d be solving exponential equations that use bases not found on your calculator, making it much harder to crack

I’d be an atom without a bomb, a dot without the com
And I’d probably still live with my mom
(All, echo: And he’d probably still live with his mom)

Ever since I met you, you’ve turned my world around
You’ve supported all my dreams and all my hopes
You’re like Uranium-235 and I’m Uranium-238,
Almost inseparable isotopes

I couldn’t have imagined how good my life would get
From the moment that I met you, Bernadette

If I didn’t have you, life would be dreary
I’d be string theory without any string
I’d be binary code without a one,
A cathode ray tube without an electron gun
I’d be ‘Firefly’, ‘Buffy,’ and ‘Avengers’ without Joss Whedon
I’d speak a lot more Klingon,
[Speaks Klingon]
All: And he’d definitely still live with his mom

Ever since I met you, you’ve turned my world around
You’re my best friend and my lover
We’re like changing electric and magnetic fields;
you can’t have one, without the other

I couldn’t have imagined how good my life would get
From the moment that I met you, Bernadette

All: Oh, we couldn’t have imagined, how good our lives would get
From the moment that we met you, Bernadette

Penny and Leonard

After despairing for not being able to do anything romantic for Leonard, Penny pulls out a box of everything that Leonard ever gave her, from the very beginning of their on and off and on again relationship, showing Leonard the most romantic gesture of all!

Sheldon and Amy

The main plot of this week’s episode was that sheldon found a formula and discovered a new element, only to realize afterwards that he had made a mistake and was being given credit for an error. Making him extremely miserable throughout the congratulations, articles written about him and even being raised.

Amy shows she’s a good girlfriend by being the only one who says that he should feel bad and that he shouldn’t get any credit.

The episode ends with an hilarious scene where Sheldon confesses his desire to kiss Amy… turns out, she was “in the zone”, aka, she was daydreaming.

Charmed: So that we’re clear!

The news running around is that CBS is eyeing a Charmed reboot, as Vulture announced:

TV’s  No. 1 network may be ready to conjure up the Power of Three: Vulture has learned that a remake of the hit Aaron Spelling–produced WB drama Charmed is in the works at CBS. Details are scant right now, but Party of Five co-creator Chris Keyser and partner Syndey Sidner are co-writing the project, which insiders describe as a “re-imagining” of the original series about a sisterhood of witches who use their powers for good. CBS TV Studios, which has the rights to all of the Spelling library, is producing the project alongside the Tannenbaum Company. It’s still very early in the development process: CBS has only ordered a script for a pilot, and it hasn’t committed to filming anything.”

Let me be totally honest here: I LOVE LOVE LOVE Charmed! It’s one of my favourite shows of all time. If I catch one episode on TV, I will see it through. I actually watch the series (season 4 – 8) once every couple of years. But come on people, a reboot? Only 7 years after it ended? While it’s still running on day to day TV due to syndication? While it’s still one of the most watched shows on Netflix?! Really?! And while the fans are still attached to the storyline, given that the show continued in the form of comic books?

I don’t see it! I really don’t see a Charmed show without Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs and Rose McGowan. Even if they re-imagine it, give them different names, even if they make them blond… if it’s Charmed based and not the original, it’s just wrong!

A simple solution that would please all the fans would be a kind of “Next generation thing”. We all know that each of them has 3 kids and they all have powers… Piper’s kids are half white-lighters and Phoebe’s children are even half-cupids!

I would definitely watch that!

Let’s just wait and see where they’ll go…

Fandoms and Knitting: here I go!

Realizing that I’m only 30 days away from The Day of the Doctor, 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, and 24 days from heading to London, I’ve decided to get a move on on my knitting project Fandoms and Knitting, and start to actually do them, in the faint hope that I’ll have finished at least one of them until then – hard thing to do, because the fourth Doctor scarf and the Gryffindor house scarf are two long and boring scarves to knit!

The first thing to do was buy the yarn, which proved kind of difficult… at least on the Doctor Who front. Web pages such as Doctor Who Scarf  or Witty Little Knitter offer suggestions to the colours to use, the trouble was finding them. I finally settled in a compromise between the real colours, the ones I actually found and the ones I liked best. So the purple is too purple, the grey is actually kind of blue, the green is softer and the red is too dark… but hey, it’s my version of it ;-).

For the Gryffindor house scarf, the yarn was fairly easier to find…

After looking online for patterns for both scarves, I then went on to the equally difficult challenge of needles. The 4th DW scarf can be knitted in basically anything, but they are two versions of the HP scarves, one of which is a circular pattern, that has to be knitted in circular needles (and if you don’t know, I tell you, it’s recommendable that the cable has roughly the same size as the work you’re gonna do, otherwise, you have to keep stretching the cable and in consequence, the yarn). The common cable sizes are 80 cm and 100 cm… well, I needed something a lot smaller, because I don’t want a 50 cm wide scarf! It took me 3 days and combing through almost every yarn shop in the city to actually find the perfect thing: the Knit Pro interchangeable circular needles!

I might have gone a little overboard with the amount of needles and cables I got, but each had a reason, so… =).

Now all that was left was actually start knitting, which I did. I started with the DW scarf, because if I can only have one ready by the time I go, it has to be this one, it’s 50 year, right?!

So here I go! I decided on the original season 12 pattern, but I made same changes: I reduced the width a bit, by casting only 40 stitches, I went for a bigger needle number, because I like my scarves fluffy and not too rigid and I’ll be reducing the number of ridges in each of colour bars, in order for it to be a little shorter than it’s supposed to.

In my yarn quests I found my perfect Ravenclaw blue, and I probably I’ll be doing to movie version, given that the book version is a lighter and stronger blue.

Sherlock gets a return date… on the US

The long wait for the third season of Sherlock is coming to an end! PBS has announced that the Sherlock will come back to the world of the living in the show’s third season, that is going to start airing January 19th.

BBC, however, has not set their return date for the show yet, but I guess it’s safe to assume that it’s will be around the same time, right?

This brilliant show has been on a prolonged hiatus since the beginning of 2012 due to the fact that both its stars spent the last 2 years filming high profile motion pictures, such as the Hobbit trilogy, where Martin Freeman plays the lead character, Bilbo Baggins, and Benedict Cumberbatch gives live to the Smaug/The Necromancer, or Star Trek Into Darkness, where Benedict plays the villain Khan.

Lets talk about The Office!

I have to confess that I did not enjoy the first season of The Office that much, but hey, there were only like six episodes, so I went on to watch the second… This was more or less a month ago… last night I watched the second half of the last season, so naturally today I’m all puffy eyed from all the incessant crying I did for approximately 2 hours!

What a brilliant show! Through 9 seasons we see the characters grow, but remain truthful to themselves. And nobody was “black or white”, everybody had a softer and a harder side and it was beautiful to see how this group of people interacted through 9 years of working together selling paper.

Michael Scott (Steve Carell), the branch manager, was a bit over the top, but he truly loved his “family”, shown clearly throughout a number of episodes, and I was glad that he got a family of his own. His special appearance in the last episode left me sobbing, but I wished we had seen a bit more of him, maybe get him in the final scene at the office with all his friends… oh well…

The Office NBC tv show image Steve Carrol as Michael Scott (1)

Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) was just hilarious with his obsessed ways and rule following… LOL… his interactions with Jim and Pam made for some super funny moments. I loved his proposal to Angela and I was so happy he finally got everything he wanted: the manager position and a child =).

Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) and Jim Halpert (John Krasinski), oh well, one could go on and on about these two. I dare say, one of the best love stories in television… ever! Big part of season 9 just cut my heart out, Jim and Pam fighting? OMG, we should never had to see that, it was so so sad. But they made up and she realised that he deserved everything, and off they went…

I had my moments of liking and disliking Andy Bernard (Ed Helms). Things like him disappearing during 3 months and so on made me really dislike him, but he always had a way of redeeming himself, somehow… After a failed attempt in showbusiness, Andy gets a job at Cornell, at the admissions office.

The Office - Season 9

Two characters I did not care about, but that had their purpose, were Ryan Howard (B.J. Novak) and Kelly Kapoor (Mindy Kaling). Being both shallow and egocentric throughout the whole series, it wasn’t exactly a surprise when they run away together at the end, leaving Kelly’s husband and Ryan’s baby behind….

Angela Martin (Angela Kinsey), though always in love with Dwight, takes a lot of time to realize it… She’s annoying at first, but super funny… she marries a gay guy, that starts to have an affair with her co-worker, and friend, Oscar Martinez (Oscar Nuñez). After Angela divorces the Senator, and Oscar is dumped, she’s left with no money and no place to stay, eventually moving in with Oscar, that then becomes the Godfather to her child (which, by the way, is Dwight’s and not her husband’s). Kevin Malone (Brian Baumgartner), the other accountant, who was never actually good with numbers, eventually gets fired by Dwight and buys a Bar.

Erin (Ellie Kemper), the naive, innocent receptionist, after a few failed relationships with Andy, then Gabe (Zach Woods), and then Andy again, finally finds a stable kind of relationship with one of the new guys, Pete (Jake Lacy). In the last episode she finally meets her birth parents, which was such a beautiful thing, since big part of the whole character was the fact that she grew up in foster homes and was never adopted…

The Office - Season 9

Stanley Hudson (Leslie David Baker), after several years of long afternoon naps and crosswords, he finally retires and moves to Florida. At Dwight and Angela’s wedding he reunites with his desk buddy Phyllis (Phyllis Smith), who is all so please to see him again.

What can I say about Meredith Palmer (Kate Flannery) and Creed (Creed Bratton)? Well, after the documentary comes out, Meredith makes sure that everybody knows that she was on her best behaviour for the last 9 years, because she was even in college… also, she finds out that her son is a stripper and is OK with it, even helps him with some of his moves. Creed, we find out, is wanted by the police, and goes into hiding for almost a year. His last music on the office is just brutal for the feels…

Toby Flenderson (Paul Lieberstein), the guy that nobody likes in the office and that has no friends, gets fired by Dwight on the same day as Kevin, eventually moving to NYC, where he has roommates, that are better than friends, because they have to give 30 days notice before they leave. Darryl Philbin (Craig Robinson) gets the most awesome goodbye from the guys at the office, after trying not to do the goodbyes, he eventually gives in and ends up celebrating his years there with a group dance… the he goes away to live his dream! Nellie Bertram (Catherine Tate) moves to Poland (and eventually gets Ryan’s baby and we are left with the clear impression that she’s taking the baby with her) – maybe I’m biased because I LOVE Catherine Tate, but I really liked her character of Nellie.

There’s a lot of beauty in ordinary things,Isn’t that the point?  – Pam Halpert

London, 17 years ago…

If there’s a place in the world I would be happy living in, is London!

The first time I went to London was in 1996, when I was just 12 years old – MAN, I’m feeling old!

I immediately fell in love with the city. True, although it was Summer, it rained a portion of the days, it was never exactly summer hot, the sky was almost always grey… but I guess that is part of why I loved it so much.

London is beautiful! Full of light and movement and old traditions that make the UK quite unique. I’ve been in London twice after that, once in 2002 and then in December 2009, with my sister-in-law and my niece. But my impending trip next month it’s gotten me really excited! I love London!

Fandoms and Knitting: 3 goals!

I love knitting! It’s a thing I learned by myself, watching some videos on youtube and searching for patterns online. I have to admit, I’m not really good at it, the only things I’m able to do are scarves, and most of those I’ve started, I never finished them… but hey, it’s better than nothing, right?

Luckily enough, 2 of my favourite fandoms are British, which means, cold weather and a lot of scarves. I’m setting 2 (or 3) goals here – I want to knit the following scarves until the end of winter (ideally I would say until November, because I would love to take them with me to London, but I’m being realistic…):

Doctor Who – The Fourth Doctor Scarf

I’m just in love with it, pure and simple, and a really want one! I will make it slightly shorter… I don’t think a scarf of 6 to 7 meters it’s adequate for everyday life…

By the way, that awesome picture of Tom Barker falling with his amazing scarf is from the new The Day of the Doctor trailer, that BBC released yesterday!

Harry Potter – Gryffindor House Scarf:

Because, come on, it’s beautiful and it’s Hermione’s scarf (and Ron’s and Harry’s and Ginny’s, …).

Harry Potter – Ravenclaw House Scarf:

Not really sure yet if movie or book edition, which in case you don’t know, is blue and bronze.

The thing is, Pottermore‘s sorting hat put me in Ravenclaw and I kind of liked it. And Luna is pretty cool…

cho_chang(couldn’t find a photo of Luna wearing the scarf… she’s to cool for that 😉 )
