American Hustle finally arrived to Spain! I was a little afraid of not liking the style of the movie (don’t really know why) but I found it quite enjoyable.
Directed by David O. Russell, it’s a movie kind of based in stuff that happened, about a couple of con artists and their use in the entrapment of a lot of politicians, with the name of Abscam.
Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) is a con artist from the Bronx. He owns a chain of drycleaners and cleans the money out of people who turn to him for a loan. He also deals with art and forgery. Then he meets Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) and falls madly in love with her. She’s so much like him that she goes right into the cons and even creates a false persona, that she adopts throughout most of the movie.
The trouble comes in the form of Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper), an FBI agent who catch them in the act and threatens to arrest them unless they help him catch a bunch of con artists. But then he gets greedy and decides that instead, he wants to arrest more important people, such as shady congressmen and the New Jersey Mayor Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner) whose only wish is to rebuild Atlantic City to bring money and more jobs to his community.
The problem is Irving’s wife, Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence), who’s totally unpredictable and refuses to divorce Irv, and because he’s afraid of leaving his adopted son with only his unbalanced mother, he obliges.
From here on now the movie is a rollercoaster. You never know what’s happening next and you never quite know who’s being conned! Sydney tells Irv that she’s going to make sure Richie likes her, and she does (even with his fiance at home), but for some time there you are quite sure that she likes him back…
Rosalyn is a mistery! The final bedroom scene between her and her husband is spectacular. Irv is a con artist with the biggest heart there is. Richie is the FBI agent with the least regard for the law. And Carmine is the most honorable of them all and ends up in jail!
Great movie, but most of all, great performances. I’m not a huge fan of Amy Adams, but she’s great, fantastic.
Also fantastic is Bale, who is one again unrecognisable – one would not know that this is the same man who played Bruce Wayne in 3 movies if his name wasn’t the same. He achieved the goal: Irving is not much to look at. Actually, the whole first scene with the hair combing, ouch, it’s disgusting.
Bradley Cooper is great as well, and that curly hair… wow… I like to see him in these kinds of roles. They show that he’s so much more than a handsome guy.
Jennifer Lawrence… is there anything she’s not good at? She makes the crazy her own and creates a character that you can’t quite put your finger on.
Renner blew me away. So far apart from other roles I saw him in, he plays a family man, with values and worries and he’s just magnificent.
