I’m in classic mode this last couple of days. After having watched Austenland a few months ago, I really wanted to watch Pride and Prejudice, from the book with the same title by Jane Austen. I found the 2005 movie version with Keira Knightley, but on IMDB this BBC production mini series of 6 episodes had a far better rating, also, is Colin Firth’s Mr Darcy that Jane is obsessed about.
So, a couple of nights ago I embarked on the viewing of the six 55 minutes episodes that comprise the mini series – with four of those episodes being watched last night at a time when I should clearly have been sleeping… considering that I had to be up by 6a.m. today.
I really liked the story, the themes are very clear and well exposed throughout the several hours and the resolutions are mostly satisfactory. That said, as proud of a man as Mr Darcy was, I couldn’t help but totally love him… seriously Lizzy, how could you reject him like that the first time, when he was pouring (rather badly) his heart out?!
I have no idea how the source material is, but I found Mrs. Bennet insufferable and with (most likely) the most annoying voice on TV or film. And Lydia?! OMG! Is she like that in the book?! Because even for today her behaviour would be quite wild, even more so in the early 19th century. While Mr Darcy was enumerating the reasons why he thought a connection with Jane would be unwise, I couldn’t help but think how right he actually was… poor Elizabeth…
Also, was Jane really such a common name back then? 19th century is full of Janes… just saying…
But now that I’m finally watching the 2005 movie I can honestly say that Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen have a greater chemistry than Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, but hey, nothing is perfect.
