What a wonderful live action adaptation… I dare to say that I actually like this movie much better than the original animated one! Cinderella will always hold a special place in my heart, it was the first animated movie from Disney that I own, back when we had VHS, and I watched it on a loop.
This version though is much better than the first. They give a background to everyone, Ella is perfect and the Prince, or Kip, doesn’t go around aimlessly trying to fit a shoe when it’s clear that the face does not match. He knows who he’s looking for and it’s adorable.
The movie is filled with such magic and humour that it was a joy to watch, I couldn’t stop smiling! It could also be because there was a couple sitting on my right hand side, where the guy was clearly enjoying the movie much more than his girlfriend… it was funny!
Lily James was the perfect choice for Cinderella, she exudes an innocence, charm and goodness that you can’t help but identify it to the character. Richard Madden was great as Kip, the guy can act, scratch that… he’s eyes alone are enough to convey the whole story!
Cate Blanchett did, as per usual, an amazing job in the role of the Evil Stepmother, bringing a much needed depth to her character. It was funny though to watch her and Helena Bonham Carter in such a role reversal. Bonham Carter, who usually plays some wacky roles, is amazing as a fairly normal Fairy Godmother, though a bit spacey…
But if I had to pick favourites in this movie, it would be the stepsisters, Drisella and Anastasia, played by Sophie McShera and Holliday Grainger. They managed to make the sister a bit lovable and so so funny.
While the CGI for the making of the dress was a bit much (but so it is in the animation movie), the transformation of the pumpkin and animals, especially the rats is awesomely done. Those little rats were amazing!
