What happens when the one that got away comes back? Find out in this sparkling debut from Mhairi McFarlane.

‘Think of the great duos of history. We’re just like them.’
‘You mean like Kylie and Jason? Torvill and Dean? Sonny and Cher?’
‘I think you’ve missed the point, Rachel.’

Rachel and Ben. Ben and Rachel. It was them against the world. Until it all fell apart. It’s been a decade since they last spoke, but when Rachel bumps into Ben one rainy day, the years melt away.

They’d been partners in crime and the best of friends. But life has moved on: Ben is married. Rachel is not. Yet in that split second, Rachel feels the old friendship return. And along with it, the broken heart she’s never been able to mend.

Hilarious, heartbreaking and everything in between, you’ll be hooked from their first ‘hello’.”

This one took me while. The reason: first person and present tense!

The story is so adorable. Ben and Rachel were best friends during the university, but she had a boyfriend at the time and they were just friends… when she runs into him 10 years later she realizes that things were not that simple. But now he’s married and she has just got off of a 13 year relationship. They become friends again, and then things get very tricky.

My favorite piece and bits were Rachel’s accounts of what happened during the 3 years of college. You know strait away that Ben is madly in love with her, but it takes him so long to actually tell her… When, in the present, she finally blurts out her feelings for him, my heart gave away a little…

I really enjoyed it! Gonna read a couple more of her books.
