We’re still not at the end of the month but I’m already drawing a line: NO MORE BOOKS! (until the next month, of course)
I bought 19 books this month, not even kidding, 19! Let me explain, I did not buy them all at the same time… that would be nuts. So let’s start with the beginning…
When I got to Portugal, having just arrived from Brazil, I went to a concert with my niece and her cousin. There, at the shopping mall, I wondered around and bought my first 2 books of the month:
1. Very Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination by J.K. Rowling (already read!)
2. The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
A few days latter I went to another shopping mall with a friend, and while she was dead set in a book with all of Jane Austen’s novels, I went and picked up 2 more books:
3. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
4. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
The next day I went yet to another shopping mall with my mom, and while she was cutting her hair, I went to the same shop to exchange something, that’s when I got:
5. Girl Online by Zoe Sugg
6. One Plus One by Jojo Moyes
(and I’m already at six!!!)
I got to Barcelona and started to read a few reviews and watching a few videos and suddenly my shopping bag at Amazon was overflowing, but I hold it out for a while, thinking “I can wait ’till next month”… turns out I really couldn’t, one and a half week of looking everyday to my shopping bag, I finally reduced it down to 9 books and completed the order:
7. Landline by Rainbow Rowell
8. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz (already read)
9. The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet by Bernie Sue and Kate Rorick
10. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews
11. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
12. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
13. Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins
14. Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins
15. Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli (already read)
OMG! by now I had 15 new books this month, but they weren’t yet at my house when I went again to a shopping mall and got one more… shame on me (but it was just so precious):
16. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
That was it! No more books for this month… and maybe the next!!!
But when the Amazon order came I was a bit disappointed… see, the Stephanie Perkins books, 2 came from the british editor and the other came from the US editor… they’re not the same size exactly, so it was just driving me crazy! At the same time I found out that there are 2 bookshops in Barcelona that sell exclusively books in English (hurrayyy!!!), and online, one of them had the book in question in the right size, so I thought “I’ll go have a look, if the book’s there, I buy it and return the Amazon one, simple, just that one book!”…
Are you guessing yet?! The first bookstore I went is amazing, seriously people, amazing (by Iberia Peninsula standards). I saw a LOT of books in my wishing list, a lot a lot, but I kept my mind on the prize… except that they didn’t have the book on stock, so I ended up picking up 2 books, one of them I really wanted for quite a while, and the other one I just couldn’t resist…
17. The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (this was a great buy, 5 books in one!)
18. The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton
At this point I really thought that I should just go home, it was unlikely that the other bookstore would have the book, but still… so I went! They didn’t, what they did have was a hardcover of a very recent book that I really wanted…
19. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir (hardcover… what was I thinking?! but it’s so shiny….)
Here they are (minus 4 that stayed back in Portugal)… see what I was talking about the Stephanie Perkin’s books?!
I loved The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern!
I read great things about it! When I saw it there I just couldn’t resist!!! 😀 😀 😀
I completely understand! It happens to me all the time with books 🙂
🙂
“No more books this month!” With only five days left in the month. (rolls eyes)
I can see why you picked a title with “Obsessions” in it. 😉
Lol. It only means i cannot get into town, otherwise it’s really hard. Still, i’ll try to hold it all next month, only making a small exception to two graphic novels that i really want
Good luck!
(I say as I recall when Guardians of the Galaxy came out, and I went to the theater, after months of not going, and how it felt like a craving finally being sated…)
LOL. You know, if society collapses and we lose access to books and movies and such, you and I are going to be so screwed! 😉
totally!!!
So many good books! I adore the Night Circus and oh my stars do I love the Anna and the French Kiss series. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a true pearl and the list just goes on. Great picks! I understand why you couldn’t resist buying them!
I am really curious about Me and Earl and the Dying Girl since I saw the trailer, I assume you’ve read it?!
Night Circus stayed in Portugal, somehow it felt more like a winter read to me… (is that weird?)
On the opposite end, the Anna and the French Kiss series seems perfect for a summer read.
Have you read Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz?
Everything I’ve mentioned are books I’ve read.
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is partially written in script form and that’s something I really enjoyed. A lot of people compare it to The Fault in Our Stars, but it’s nothing alike, except that it’s both about people with cancer. The trailer looks amazing! But I will admit that the language wasn’t really my thing and I was sometimes a little frustrated with the main character, but it’s still a great book.
I kind of get why you’d feel like Night Circus is a winter read. I think I read it in summer, but who cares. I read a book about Christmas in summer as well hahaha. I love the Night Circus. It’s so magical and I will guarantee that it’ll stay with you for a while. It took me a little to get into it and then I couldn’t put it down.
Anna and the French Kiss is perfect for the summer and it’s incidentally also my favourite of the series (My ranking: 1. Anna, 2. Isla, 3. Lola – a loooot of people would disagree, because many didn’t appreciate Isla at all). I could so much identify with Anna and Isla.
And lastly, no I haven’t read Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. It’s been on my to-read list for a while, but I never have the urge to actually buy it.
I just finished Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe yesterday – it’s really good.
I’m really looking forward to the Stephanie Perkin’s series, everyone says wonderful things about her and I never read nothing from her.
I’ll keep that in mind.
The books are fantastic! They are light and fun and sweet. It’s hard not to like them 🙂
🙂 I’m really excited about them (I’m still a little bummed that the second book is not the same size as the other 2, though…)
I get that, my Anna book is larger than the other two copies, because one is from the American publisher and the others are from the British one. It frustrates me to no end when that happens.
YES! It’s no annoying!!! As of now I will always check the publisher when I order through amazon… :S
After what happened with the book box, I’m more likely to order from my book store chain than from Amazon. Even if it takes a little longer lol
i hear you, after discovering that bookshop in Barcelona that only sells english books, I think I’ll buy more at the physical store, though I have to admit, amazon is a lot cheaper than ordering from our stores here in this side of europe. For instance, Red Queen was selling at the store for almost 16€, while the same book at amazon.es is selling for 10.62€… it’s a huge difference 😦
Oh wow, I barely buy books that cost more than 12 Euros, unless they are hardcover.
exactly! that why Red Queen is not part of this month’s book haul… when the price difference is that high, i don’t have any doubt that I’ll buy online… 6 euros is almost the price of another book!
Absolutely! That would seems pretty useless and a waste of money otherwise.
oh, and I also found a store – to which i controlled myself and did not go to yet – that sells secondhand books and stuff just in english! I want to get the lord of the rings and some more stuff there 😀
I used to know a shop like that! The books were in perfect condition but they cost like 5 bucks. That was back in the States though.
I have to check it out to see the condition of the books, but there are some as cheap as 1.99€… maybe I’ll find some stuff nice 🙂 (next month though)
🙂 that’s really soon anyway
shhhh, don’t say that. I think I’ll keep busy and go there past the middle of the month… luckily I don’t have excuses to go into barcelona for a while, so…
Well, good luck with your plan!
it shouldn’t be too hard. I have a lot of different types of books to read now, so I’ll be entertained for a while 🙂
I’m running out of books, but I have my final bachelor exam mid-June and I need to study for that. So, I should be busy as well.
🙂 good luck with your final 🙂
Thanks 🙂
oh, by the way, are you enjoying My Heart and Other Black Holes?
Yep! Only 10 pages left … but I have to work so I can’t finish it. It’s torture. I’ll write a review when I’m done.
great 🙂
On another note, have you seen the new covers for TMI and TID? … I kind of want them really bad, but I just bought everything with the old covers …
http://www.shadowhunters.com/repackages.php
yes, i’ve seen those, but I’m in love with these ones: http://www.amazon.es/gp/product/1406362166/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1AT7YVPFBWXBL
You can see them all around there… they’re so beautiful and I want them all…
Uuuh they look lovely! But I want the TID with the new covers nonetheless … Jem looks so intriguing on them!
and much cuter than on the first ones! having the 9 books in the same style would be great… and the 6 that are gonna pop up in the next few years
I mean I’m obviously not going to re-purchase them … I don’t have money to just throw out the window. But my heart will always be yearning for them …
Yep… I get you! My mom keeps asking “do you buy the books for the content or the covers?” and I keep saying “for the content, but having a nice cover doesn’t hurt”… 😀
I really loved the graveyard book from Neil Gaiman and the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is hilarious, they are both really good 😉 have some nice readings and don’t forget the thesis :p
Lol, how could I ?! =P
