Girl Online (Zoe Sugg)

>  Nº 45 on My 2015 Reading Challenge – A book set during Christmas <

I had no idea GirlOnline would take off the way it has – I can’t believe I now have 5432 followers, thanks so much! – and the thought of opening up to you all about this is terrifying, but here goes…

Penny has a secret.

Under the alias GirlOnline, she blogs about school dramas, boys, her mad, whirlwind family – and the panic attacks she’s suffered from lately. When things go from bad to worse, her family whisks her away to New York, where she meets the gorgeous, guitar-strumming Noah. Suddenly Penny is falling in love – and capturing every moment of it on her blog.

But Noah has a secret too. One that threatens to ruin Penny’s cover – and her closest friendship – forever.

This book took me FOREVER! Ok, so not forever, but 5 days is way too much for this kind of YA book.

Girl Online did not work for me. It took me so long to get through it because for the first 100 pages or so, I could not read more than 20 pages at one sitting.  After page 100, when they are in New York, the pace becomes a little more bearable, but still, it’s not a great improvement.

The plot uses all the clichés in the world of YA lit: gay best-friend, clumsy girl, girl who can’t connect with the world, miracle trip, instant-love with a random stranger in NYC who turns out to be pretty famous, hot guy back at school who suddenly likes her back… you get the gist… It’s nothing that others YA novels haven’t used a million times. So, what makes this one worse than all the others?! It’s terrible written! SO BAD!

So, here are some stuff that really troubled me while reading this and had me rolling my eyes and huffing loudly on the train:

  • She’s insufferable. I know that probably every 15 year-old girl has confidence problems, but do you really have to repeat the same bulls*** 1000 times?
  • The blogging. This could have been good, if she actually “lived” online, maybe the storyline would be more interesting. Instead she writes a post once a week, about her everyday life. She doesn’t actually spend that much time online… none at all actually. And the posts?! Mehhh, bleak!
  • The blog. Jesus, do you have a miracle formula to post once a week and have thousands of followers within the first year?

  • The panic attacks. They could have actually worked this, but instead you have a pretty dumb 15 YO who doesn’t know that panic attacks exist… it serves mostly to advance her intimacy with Noah.
  • Her bitchy School-BFF… so stereotypical.
  • The New York Trip. Really?! A couple getting married choose someone from the UL to organize their wedding in a few days that is taking place in NYC? I’m sorry, it doesn’t make any sense. I was always under the impression that the planners worked on a contacts basis, and they didn’t know anyone in NY, so how could they organize the whole thing?
  • So, it’s totally normal to let your 15 yo daughter roam around NY with an 18 yo guy she just met?! Are you serious? I don’t care who the grandmother (you just also met) is.
  • That instant-love with Noah just felt so… weird! Come one… no, no, no, no…

  • The second job – which only purpose was to keep them in the city. At the wedding her mom tells her that the girl she’s doing the second party for is willing to pay all their expenses until the New Year… so why the hell do they leave the hotel to stay in the house of someone they just met?
  • Another thing, nobody thought about what an 18 and 15 yo were doing completely alone and in the dark? I mean, no matter how much you trust your kids, they don’t know this guy… grrrrr!!!

  • Penny doubting Elliott (and being altogether an awful friend). Basically, from the moment Penny met Noah, her head stopped working. Her best friend has to travel alone home and she doesn’t even check her phone? Then shares all this stuff on the web before talking to him? I did not like it. And after that, actually believing that he would blow up the story like that? GGGGGRRRRRRRRR… And then Elliott apologizing?!
  • The scandal…. it just had me rolling my eyes the whole time.

  • The ending. Ok, so the ending is the only reason why this book even has one star, yes, it could have been worse. It’s sweet – too sweet though. The only character that I felt that redeemed himself was Penny’s brother, who turned out to be a pretty cool brother.

This book did not work for me, but hey, maybe I’m alone on this one. And maybe you all loved it. It has a 3.8 rating on Goodreads, so people have enjoyed it.

Also worth mentioning is the slight scandal that surrounded this book a couple of months back. Apparently this book was written by ghostwriter, Siobhan Curham, and Zoe just had the idea and the obvious name-attached to it since she’s a famous YouTuber (apparently… I had never hear of her).

Shadowhunters BTS Week 3 (3)

After the first few days of the week, which were crazy in terms of tweets of BTS stuff, the rest of the week was a lot calmer. I suspect it will be calmer still from now on. There are more BTS pics, and some with Dom and Matt with their respective girlfriends, and all, but I just wanted to put the cast here. Enjoy.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (Jesse Andrews)

>  Nº 3 on My 2015 Reading Challenge – A book that became a movie <

Up until senior year, Greg has maintained total social invisibility. He only has one friend, Earl, and together they spend their time—when not playing video games and avoiding Earl’s terrifying brothers— making movies, their own versions of Coppola and Herzog cult classics. Greg would be the first one to tell you his movies are f*@$ing terrible, but he and Earl don’t make them for other people. Until Rachel.

Rachel has leukemia, and Greg’s mom gets the genius idea that Greg should befriend her. Against his better judgment and despite his extreme awkwardness, he does. When Rachel decides to stop treatment, Greg and Earl must abandon invisibility and make a stand. It’s a hilarious, outrageous, and truthful look at death and high school by a prodigiously talented debut author.

This is an interesting book. I laughed so hard while reading this book, I was having fits on the bus and everything… FUN!

*** Warning, there will be MAJOR SPOILERS, you have been warned ***

The story is interesting enough: boy who just wants to be invisible, with his only friend being more of a co-worker, is forced to bond with dying girl. To top it off, Greg and Earl do movies together, and some of the book is written in script form, which is pretty cool.

The story in itself is not groundbreaking, I think this a story about life happening, that exactly specific events in one’s life. Nothing monumental actually happens in neither of their lives… well, Rachel dies, but that’s about it. It’s not a story about friendship, or young love, or achieving your true potential. It goes a bit like this: Greg doesn’t want friends, Greg is forced to be friends with Rachel, Greg thinks that his job it to make Rachel laugh, Earl becomes friends with her and is able to say so, Greg doesn’t understand why he’s sad that Rachel is worst, Rachel loves the videos, Rachel gets sicker, Greg cries – still doesn’t understand, Rachel dies, Earl sets Greg straight, Greg decides to apply to film school. Sure, in the meantime he kind of grows, they kind of become friends.

I absolutely loved the book, the pacing is good, is easy to read, the story is entertaining, though not very deep (from Greg’s point of view). But I think it will work better on film than on the page.

Why? Well, in the book Greg comes off as a highly unlikable character. I could not stand him. Sure, he says several times that Earl is a better person than he is, but it is actually very true. Earl is great, Rachel is amazing, Greg?! Mehhh!! It’s because he’s always reinforcing the idea that it is not a love story… we get it, then he says several times that he’s only there to make her laugh, he says other stuff that just made me want to slap him. And still, even though the book is narrated by a meehh character, I still quite enjoyed it!

So looking forward to the movie! Especially since the reviews have been great!

It’s the # that keeps on giving… (part 1 part 2)

Shadowhunters: Kaitlyn Leeb cast as Camille Belcourt

I have to be very honest here, I do not know where they’re going with this… it’s way too soon to be casting Camille, right? Given that the first time she’s even mention is in City of Glass, and then she only shows up in City of Fallen Angels… but hey, whatever, I’m sure they’ll make it work somehow.

The news of the day is that she was cast! Yes, Kaitlyn Leeb has been tapped to play the leader of the Vampire Clan, Camille Belcourt, also known as *SPOILER* the bi*** who broke Magnus heart so many years ago… (sorry, couldn’t help it… not a big fan of Camille).

I am liking the casting though, she’s not at all as I imagined her, and yet there is something very Camille-like about her.

I read somewhere that they’re also casting Meliorn, so the Seelie Queen should follow soon, yeah?! I’m kind of excited about the fairies.

#DistractinglySexy 2 (because it keeps getting better!)

Yesterday the #DistractinglySexy started trending on twitter and I compiled a few of the post here. But because it is still very relevant, and I can’t ignore it, I’ll share a few more with you. (part 1part 3)

In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, Nobel Prize winner Sir Tim Hunt shared a few insights while on a conference, saying that labs should be same sex only, because women in the labs cause some trouble… either the men fall in love with them, or they fall in love with the men, and then they cry. Yep, that’s what the bastard said! He then apologized, saying how wrong of him it was to say it in front of journalists (yeah, not sorry he said it and thought it, just that the journalists were present…).

In case you’re wondering, he resigned yesterday from his UCL post. I have to admit, I’ve been in science for about 12 years, I’ve been working in a mixed lab since I entered my Masters (a while back) and before that I worked with guys in the lab… NEVER HAD THAT PROBLEM. Crying?! Sure, it might have happened, you know, when I work for a whole month and PCRs keeps coming up contaminated or negative, sure, I might shed a tear, but I never had any sort of inkling towards a male colleague…

SO, without further ado, here are some more fun tweets about this.

#DistractinglySexy is the best response ever to Tim Hunt

A Nobel prize-winning scientist has been forced to apologise for saying female colleagues “fall in love” in the workplace and “cry” when criticised.

Sir Tim Hunt, a Cambridge PhD graduate, has come under fire for telling a group of Korean scientists that women distract men from work and should be in same-sex laboratories.

Three things happen when they are in the lab, you fall in love with them, they fall in love with you, and when you criticise them they cry,” he said.

The 72-year-old also admitted to the audience that he was a “chauvinist pig”.

When I read this yesterday I was obviously outraged (me being a woman in science and all), but today, not only did he resign, but Women in Science took twitter to have the last word under the hashtag , and you just have to go look, it’s amazing. Here are some (see more part 2part 3):

Day 12 of filming gave us a couple of very nice Sizzy/Izzy pics:

And also, a shirtless Simon…

This, OMG, this:

Should we even care that Simon’s “sword” has some kind of pink stuff in it?
