Doctor Who: River Song will return for Christmas Special

BBC has announced today that Alex Kingston will be back as River Song for the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas Special.

“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special. Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humour and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!” – Alex Kingston

“Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who – and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song. The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time.” – Steven Moffat

I’m both excited and terrified about this return. For one hand, I love River and I LOVE Alex Kingston, and I think that she might have even better chemistry with Peter Capaldi than she had with Matt Smith. I really think that River and the 12th Doctor might complement each other very well. On the other hand, this is a huge deal and I’m a bit afraid that Steven Moffat might screw up along the way (I’m not coy about the fact that I don’t really like Steven Moffat’s direction to the show).

Either way, this is an exciting piece of news and something to look forward to.

Concerning the timeline … this will be SO confusing! Since they travel in opposite directions (you know the whole, every time they meet she knows him more and he knows her less), is this all before she gets uploaded into the library?
I LOVE Alex Kingston, but the whole River thing was kind of over for me … I hope he doesn’t ruin it with her return.

I looooove Riversong. I loved her chemistry with Matt Smith as the Doctor. I love Matt Smith. Oh no, my deep inner fangirl is coming out…. 😂

me too. I love the characters he created and I loved the episodes he wrote before becoming showrunner, but I don’t like his general direction and arrogance. Also, Matt Smith is not my favorite Doctor, he’s brilliant, but not my favorite, and I think a lot of people relate Steven Moffat too much to Matt’s tenure and confuse things a bit…

Yeah…it’s weird because DW owes him so many great episodes and concepts (he wrote Blink for goodness sake) but when he took over the show it moved away from the fun and occasionally bittersweet show it was toward a show where each season was basically one long and super dramatic episode.

        • MyTinyObsessions says:

yes, i really hate that. I mean, I like that each season has to have an arc, but I miss the times when that arc did not overtook every single episode, but it was more of a crescendo. Not now. Now everything is the biggest thing ever…

!!!!!! OH YES!!!!! Mine are like that too! Like Maisie Williams – brilliant, please SM, don’t screw it up.
I would love to see all these old storylines and characters come back, but I’m always afraid to the consequences of it.
I might be one of the few who didn’t like Missy is this last season… 😦

I am so nervous about Maisie Williams!! Ugh. I miss the days when watching Doctor Who was almost always guaranteed fun times. And when it wasn’t, it was because the monster of the week was especially absurd. Now…sometimes I even have a hard time getting excited to watch new episodes, which I never would have expected a couple years ago when I was rabid DW fan.

Doctor: 1- David Tennant, 2- Patrick Troughton, 3 – possibly Capaldi (still pondering)
Companion: 1 – Donna, then I really liked Martha and Jaimie

I still need to get through a few of the classics, but the classic companions (apart from season 1) didn’t have so much weight as the new ones.

            What about you?

(I can’t reply to your comment for some reason, so I’ll reply here.)

David Tennant is also my favorite! Then Christopher Eccleston. I didn’t like him much the first time through, mostly because I was very skeptical of DW in general for several episodes. On rewatch, though, I realized I LOVED him and his sassiness. Capaldi is third, Matt Smith is fourth. I haven’t watched any of the classics. :/

As far as companions go, I LOVED Rose. I related to her a lot, and I thought she was a perfect introduction of someone with a “mundane” life finding meaning and purpose through travel. I also adore Donna, and Jack Harkness. Rory would be somewhere up there along with Martha. Amy and Clara don’t rate too high for me — I’m not here for their brand of “strong opinionated women” with little to no backstory or real flaws.

I like Eccleston a lot, I think he’s underrated. Sometimes people think that because he only stayed one year, he was a worse Doctor than Matt, for instance, I don’t agree. He’s singlehandedly responsible for the fact that DW was able to find it’s way back, he he wasn’t a good 9th Doctor, they wouldn’t have been able to keep doing it.

My least favorites are also Amy and Clara. I love Rose! But it always breaks my heart to re-watch her episodes 😦

          • Tricia says:

Haha, yes! Ugh, those were SO GOOD. Nothing has really compared (except maybe Neil Gaiman’s episode “The Doctor’s Wife”) to the awesomeness of seasons 1-4. I think those early seasons were more focused on emotion – the wonder, excitement, and fear of traveling, growing, learning. Whereas now it’s mostly cerebral – can you solve the plot?

Oh yay! I’m excited. I also don’t like Moffat either. He’s not done so well on the show so far.
I really liked River, although Rose is still my favorite. I’d love to find out what’s going on with her and the other doctor in the alternate universe.
