Wow, did you know that it has been well over a month since I posted about a movie? Yep, apart from a korean movie I watched on board when I was on my way to Korea, this is the first movie I’ve seen in over a month! WOW indeed!
Yesterday I had a lazy Sunday at home and decided it was well past the time to watch Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, based on the novel by Jesse Andrews of the same name, which I reviewed back in June.
The reviews of the movie have been fantastic so far, so I was expecting it to be good, but man, I wasn’t expecting it to be that much better than the book. And it is! I liked the book, but the movie is absolutely amazing.
I was right back in June, this plot and story work way better in movie form than on the page. On the book, we never quite know exactly how Greg feels about everything and everyone surrounding him, because he is never really honest about it. This works way better on the movie, given that we can actually see his expressions and desperation written plainly on his face. Also, the relationship between the 3 main characters is way deeper in the movie than in the novel. Here we go through almost an entire year of bonding and OMG, it’s so so beautiful. I was crying like a baby – sobbing really – throughout the last third of the movie.
So, everything works amazingly well for this movie. The cinematography is completely unique, and there are a few scenes with a still camera that will give you the chills. Greg and Earl’s movies also work out great on movie – duh! This is a very visual plot, so I think it’s natural that the film can give it something that was severely lacking in the book.
I completely loved this movie. I adored Olivia Cooke as Rachel, and I think we can expect great things from her – and oh, her voice, I love her voice. Also, Nick Offerman as Greg’s dad was an unexpected pleasure 🙂 . I also loved RJ Cyler as Earl 🙂 .
And OMG, Hugh Jackman! I totally gasped at that scene, I was not expecting it at all.
To finish, I really loved it, and I think that even if you didn’t enjoy the novel all that much, you’ll really like the film. Trust me 😉 !
Told you so :P!
Nah, just kidding. But I am really glad you liked it! I was the same in the last third of the movie. It completely wrecked me! I was just saying “Greg, you freaking liar” while tears streamed down my face, even though I knew what would happen LOL
yeah, why oh why did he kept telling she wouldn’t die? for a moment I actually thought that they would change the ending but then no… 😥
Right!? He said it so many times that I actually started doubting that it would happen.
yep.yep. *crying*
i think the relationships were so much better in the movie. the scenes when he was waiting for her to get back from the hospital were so heartwarming… 😦
I liked the relationships better too, but I think it could have used some more Earl in the mix. CJ Ryler did such a great job, but he came a little short in my opinion.
maybe, maybe there could have been more scenes of earl and greg… =/
I don’t think it’s a huge thing and I loved the movie, but that was a point that I would have liked to see a little more.
yep, i can see it. the movie had space to go a little longer too. but the kid was so good that I almost forgot that he was supposed to be mini mini and have like a trillion brothers
Hahaha I didn’t think about that either. And he did have that one brother who always sat on the hood of some car or something like that.
yes, that was hilarious. lol
The movie is way better than the book and I don’t say this that often. Did you cry like a baby in the end because I did. I was a mess by the end of the movie XD
omg, yes, i used up 3 paper tissues… so much crying. The scene when he’s in her room finding all those things about her… so beautiful 😥
I had to take my glasses off because they were all fogged and I couldn’t see anything
i totally understand 😦 so good. the scene when she enters her coma… oh boy… that girl has a bright future ahead of her…
I love her in Bates Motel. I still need to watch the last season but I still love her there
i never saw it, so this is the first thing i saw with her
It’s pretty cool (and creepy). Her character has cystic fibrosis so she’s always carrying her oxygen tank and she can’t do a lot of stuff
yeah, i usually don’t watch creepy stuff… Sleepy hollow and Supernatural are “creepy” enough for me
I watch Supernatural too but sometimes I like to watch Bates Motel and American Horror Story. But let’s be real, I never finished a AHS season because it gets too creepy for me 😛
Lol. Are you watching the new one?
Supernatural or AHS?? I’m watching Supernatural. It’s actually the only tv show that I’m up to date. I’m late with everything else
i meant AHS, with lady Gaga and Matt Boomer 🙂
Is this season of supernatural good? I’m so late with it
It’s been pretty good. The last episode was all inside the Impala so you only saw what was happening inside the car.
I will watch AHS I just don’t know when because it looks even creepier than the previous seasons
i’m super curious about the cast, but not enough to actually watch AHS.
The episode was called Baby, right? TVLine said it was probably the best supernatural episode in years 😀
I read the recap for AHS first episode and just to know what was about and it traumatized me. Also, from what I read Lady Gaga barely talks in the show.
Yes, it was Baby. It was really good but I’m liking the season so far
😀 nice. I need to catch up. I’m to day with just a couple of shows though 😦
I stopped watching a lot of tv shows and I’m still behind in everything because I’m too lazy. I still haven’t watched one Doctor Who episode 😦
me neither… heck, I still haven’t watched the christmas special… 😦
I think that the Christmas Special is the last episode that I saw. But right now I’m waiting for the end of the season. I’ll watch everything after that
I’m with you on that.
Sounds like a great movie! I haven’t read the book but might just see the movie XD just kidding
Knowing that Nick Offerman is involved makes me more likely to watch anything. Great review. I was unsure about this movie, but I’m really interested to see it now.
it is really good. have you read the book?
I haven’t. I keep meaning to. I am a massive wimp about reading books that will make me cry. I read A Monster Calls a few months back and I feel like I’m still recovering from that!
oh, this book won’t make you cry. laugh yes, but I didn’t cry once (and I’m a big crier)
Ooh! That makes me much more likely to pick it up at some point. I think I saw it, thought of The Fault In Our Stars and decided I wouldn’t be able to cope. Way to judge a book by it’s cover.
yeah, well, it deals with cancer, but in a totally different way 😉
All your headers on your blog posts are incredible! Love them!
oh, thank you 🙂
I’ve never read the book, but I saw the movie maybe a month ago and I loved it!!! I loved all the quirky scenes and Greg and Earl’s movies. AND I actually seriously believed Greg when he kept saying that she wasn’t going to die! I felt so betrayed!
i almost believed it myself 😦
Oh my goodness, this movie was SO GOOD. I actually haven’t read the book *hides in shame,* but if it’s anywhere near where the movie was, I’ll be seriously amazed. It was so hilarious and unique and HEART-BREAKING (I keep telling myself that the best kinds of books and movies are, but when you sob for, like, 4 hours afterwards? Not okay.). Anyway, great post! 🙂
😀 yes, I cried a lot too, though not 4 hours later 😛
my advice, given how much you loved the movie, is don’t read the book… it’s just not as good and you’ll be disapointed
I’ve been hearing that from a lot of people, so I don’t think I’m going to read it. I’m really curious about it, though….
i personally wouldn’t read it after the movie… =/
