Movie of the Week: The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Part 2

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 finally opened this week here in Spain – yes people, we are ALWAYS behind on movie’s premieres… it sucks! Anyway, it opened on Friday, so I was obviously there.

I really liked the movie, it’s a stellar adaptation from the source material. These 3 books might just be the best adaptations from book to screen ever. The movie does a great job telling the last part of the story, still showing all that goes on behind the action, and how Katniss and her team are still nothing more than a piece in the game of President Snow vs. President Coin.

The action was on point, there are some true horrific moments that will make you gasp if you haven’t read the books. Heck, I read the books, and when these moments and deaths came, I still gasped and cried like a baby. It’s such a sad movie… Oh Finnick… 😦

The only thing I wish that they had included in the adaptation was Johanna and Katniss bonding and becoming friends. The movie does very little to humanize Johanna and she comes off as a b***h sometimes, while in the book we see her struggles firsthand. Hers and Katniss’ training is important, but I do get why they had cut that.

The acting is truly stellar here! Jennifer Lawrence is perfect as always, but Josh Hutcherson is brilliant as Peeta, he looks so broken most of the time =/ that it’s unbearably sad 😦 . But Elizabeth Banks is still my favorite! She has a scene towards the end, when she’s saying goodbye to Katniss and Haymitch that just broke my heart with a single expression from her.

The ending is bittersweet, and while I admire that they included the epilogue in the movie, and almost wish that they didn’t. The epilogue in the book is all Katniss inner monologue and they translated that to her talking to a baby, and while it’s well done, I almost wish that the movie would have ended in the mythic “real”.

And finally, I’m so glad that my theory about Haymitch and Effie came true!

So people, have you watched this movie yet? Did you cry (oh, please, tell me I wasn’t the only one…)? What did you think of it?

This movie was so amazing! I agree that they should have shown more of Katniss and Johanna becoming friends, because Johanna is my favorite character. And oh my gosh I cried so hard! Especially when you-know-what happened to Finnick, and when Katniss was yelling at Buttercup.

I went to see the film a week ago and was pleasently surprised. Mockingjay Part2 is a good ending for the whole thing. What I appreciated most is that they cut the love-story thing down to a minimun. I was a bit afraid that they’d push the war somewhere in the background for that but fortunately this is not the case! =)

    (and yes, I cried.)

🙂 I never felt that these books had the love story as the main focus, I think the emphasis on that has to be blamed on the fandom and the craziness of the “teams” =/ but yeah, that movie did a great job with that 😀

I cried nonstop for the last 20 minutes and there was this 8 year old sitting next to me (way too young to be watching the movie) who was silently judging me and whispering to her mum the whole time.

Oh Mockingjay crushed me into a million pieces (in a its-my-current-favourite-movie kind of way😂) I cried almost the whole time especially when Katniss was yelling at Buttercup, it was so true to the book and such an amazing wrap up to the franchise.

The weird thing was that the only scene that made me almost ball my eyes out was the scene when Katniss started going off at the cat, and started yelling and throwing things! I must say this was a great adaptation, I loved the execution scene near the end so much honestly.

I practically bawled out with a fist stuffed in my fist when Finnick died. The mutts….and Katniss is yelling his name….and she shoots him….and Annie and him…..and his son, and you know what is worst, Cristi?! IT’S EVEN MROE UNBEARABLE WHEN YOU KNOW FINNICK IS GOING TO DIE and you have no hope. I literally bawled out. But Prim’s death was portrayed as on par or even better to the book. It certainly got my heart beating and it went by faster than Finnick’s but….I LOVED MOCKINGJAY PART TWO AND NOW THAT IT’S ALL OVER, WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE? I AM DONE FOR.

Glad to see we had some pretty similar thoughts.

    Love and books,
