Can’t Stay Away (Lilly Avalon)

Piper Winchester is fresh out of college. With only three weeks until her father remarries and five weeks until her first business venture launches, she’s got her hands full. She certainly doesn’t need any distractions to get in the way of building the future her father’s always wanted for her. But when a familiar boy with bright green eyes walks back into her life, she’s thrown for a loop.

Four years ago, Chase MacKenzie left for college without looking back. He didn’t mean to disturb the peace then, and he definitely doesn’t want to do that now. Once he lays his eyes on Piper again, there’s no way he can leave without fixing what went wrong in the past. Although she’s more determined than ever to push him away, he still manages to get under her skin. Regardless of what happens between them, there’s one thing that will always be standing in their way…

He’s about to become her stepbrother.

I don’t know what’s going on this month, but this was my third step-siblings romance in the space of 18 days. Granted, they were all remarkably different, and this was the first NA of the three, but still, I think I’m done with the step-siblings thing for a little while :P.

I had a little trouble getting into this story. The writing in the first few chapters was a bit choppy and the formating of the file didn’t help me to really get into the story. Still, it got better, and I flew by the second half of the book.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the characters to be honest. I liked them fine, but that was it. Piper was so controlled in her life that she hardly seemed like an out of college girl, instead, she seemed to have stopped at 17. Chase was a bit more fleshed out, but still very dependent on everything around him. This made it hard to love them, because they were always acting on someone else’s wishes, instead of their own. The parents were deplorable… both of them… bah! The secondary characters, a.k.a., Chase and Piper’s friends were surprisingly very cool, though I couldn’t help but find slightly funny that all three of them were gay men.

There was something lacking in the background of their romance. When they see each other after 4 years of no-contact, they rekindle the romance fairly quickly, which would have made much more sense if their story as teens would have been more developed. I needed more on them when they were younger, to understand their importance in each other’s lives, their friendship and their love. Still, with that said, their romance was hot and very well done as adults. and I loved the resolution of their story.

If you’re looking for a fun, light romance, with a touch of taboo, give this one a go.
