This book starts in a very powerful way, with a POV of Loïc at the age of five years old, and every once in awhile we get glimpses of him growing up, and honestly those were probably my favorite chapters. Such raw pain. I really enjoyed the writing, it pulled all sorts of emotions from me, one moment I would be near tears and then I would be laughing at something one of the characters was saying. You know it’s good writing when that transition is seamless and so well done.
The characters were something else. I really liked Loïc. With everything that went on in his life, I felt that he was a relative “normal” adult, granted, with a lot of issues. Still, the fact that he was willing to admit those issues, talk about them and work through them, made me like him even more. London… wow… I really liked her, but boy, was she challenging. This girl was passionate and understanding and caring, but she was also spoiled, extremely spoiled, and without a clue of what to do with her life. And she sometimes reacted so impulsive and such like a brat… oh… so many flaws. Both of them are extremely flawed.
The secondary characters were super interesting, and I hope we get to see more of them in the following books. I like the dynamic that Loïc has with Cooper and Maggie, and given how important they are to him, I hope they’re more present from here on out. While I enjoyed Paige, London’s BFF, immensely, I wish she lived a little less in the clouds.
Generally speaking I liked the plot, with London and Loïc growing up together and helping each other through things. But this is clearly only a third of the story, and I don’t think the plot was enough by itself. The conflicts were small and while I thought that it wasn’t quite enough, I also felt that it was kind of a perfect way to start their story. Conflicts! LOL. I should also note that this is a huge case of Insta-LOVE/LUST/STRONG LIKE.
I think that the privileged and spoiled life that London has had so far will come into play at some point, because while I liked them together, I do think they still have a lot of obstacles to go through. I’m not sure how they’ll deal with the amount of differences between them. Well, I’ll tell you this, I can’t wait for the next two books!
