Fractions of seconds can do lots of damage. One decision can ruin lives. A blink can be tragic. And loving a Hollister…can hurt like hell.

I would know.

They say the average person can hold their breath under water for two full minutes when pushed to the extremes. Will Hollister has been holding his for years. The oldest of two elite swimming brothers, Will was always a dominant force in the water. But in life, he preferred to let his younger brother Evan be the one to shine.

Evan got the girl, and Will… he got to bury all of the secrets. A brother’s burden, the weight of it all nearly left him to drown.

The daughter of two Olympians, my path was set the day my fingertips first touched water. My future was as crystal clear as the lane I dominated in the pool—swim hard, win big, love a Hollister.

My life with Evan burned bright. He gave me arms to come home to, and a smile that fooled the world into believing everything was perfect. But it was Will who pushed me. Will… who really knew me.

And when all of the pieces fell, it was Will who started to pick them up.

In the end, the only thing that matters are those few precious seconds — and what we decide to do while we still have them in our grasp.

I read this book as a buddy read with Cátia @The Girl Who Read Too Much, so go there in the next few days to check her review of this book.

By now I’ve read a few books by Ginger Scott, and I think that her writing has gotten better and better. Hold My Breath is told in dual POV and it’s just… beautiful. The writing, the way the sentiments and feelings are exposed on the page is just breathtaking.

The amazing writing and the complex and heartbreaking storyline, make this my favorite Ginger Scott book… without a doubt (and heck, I LOVED The Hard Count!).

As I said, this is one hell of a complex story. Will and Maddy grew up together, trained together, pushed each other, but when Will went away to college, it was Will’s younger brother, Evan, who got the girl. This all came crashing when a terrible accident takes away all of Will’s family… Will lives with the guilt of surviving, and Maddy blames him for it too… for the wrong brother having survived.

It’s pretty clear from the start though, that the brother who survived was absolutely the right one, because Will is one of the best men I ever read about. And it’s also painfully clear from the start too that he has always loved Maddy. Well before Evan made his move. It’s also obvious that Maddy was always affected by Will too, and her feelings for him were of way more than friendship.

But the story is way deeper than the potential sort of forbidden romance. Will carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, he keeps secrets that are not his, he wants to be there for everyone, while not getting the love and support he needs and deserves. Maddy has her own demons too, the guilt, the pressure of knowing she absolutely needs to be the best for her parents, and her feelings for the boy she always thought was a risk.

I loved this story. The chemistry, feelings and interactions between Will and Maddy were amazing, and they were sweet and cute and hot. Their love shined. It’s not a happy go lucky story though… it’s actually heartbreaking. But they faced their problems head on, and even through doubts and fears, they didn’t let go of each other. I love this! I love this lack of drama within their relationship. The world might have be falling apart, but they were TOGETHER!

I can’t recommend this book enough… go read it guys! NOW!
