Bye bye 2016 & 2017 Resolutions Tag

resolutions_1

Hey guys! Last year I did the 2016 Resolutions Book Tag, and I thought that it would be cool to actually check how that went, and write something up for the upcoming year of 2017…

“4 topics only. Not a fan of multiple questions, sorry! No rules. Give whatever. No right or wrong. You’re your own boss!”

Bookish Resolutions

In 2016, I will…

1. Request less books from Netgalley. I’ve been overdoing it for a couple of months now, and it has to stop, or at least slow down, because my To Read for Review pile is ginormous. – I sort of failed at this for most of the year… I requested a LOT of books from Netgalley, but I did reach 80%, so I’m considering it a win!

2. Read more books from my shelf. I won’t impose myself a book-buying ban or anything of the sorts, but I do want to get through some books that I already own and that I didn’t get to this year. – Hmmm, I sort of did?! Maybe?! Maybe not as much as I should have…

3. Buy a second bookshelf and put away all my books. The trouble with living in 2 houses is that I have books everywhere, and each time I come home from Barcelona, I don’t have the space to put away the books I brought with me. This will be better once I get my second shelf. – I did accomplish this!!

Book Blogging Resolutions

In 2016, I will…

1. Keep posting at least 5 times a week, ideally every day. I like it! I like to have something to say every day, and if I keep reading at the pace of the last few months, this won’t be a problem. – I did post every single day, except for 3 days in August/September, because I was working during the day, and I was super tired. But I did post almost everyday and I most times, multiples times a day, so hurray!

2. Stop blog hopping while at work. This one is important. I need to stop with this bad habit. – Yeah, I did manage this, but I have to admit that my blog hopping habits are not good… I went a bit from 800 to 8, I need to blog hop more now…

3. Be more active in social media and make more blog friends 😀 ! – Maybe this was a fail?! I was a bit absent from the overall community this year…

4. Do some discussion posts. I only did one so far and I really liked it, and I want to keep doing them, maybe create a one a month kind of thing… I think that would work for me. – I did a few discussion posts this year, though not as consistently as I would have liked… still, I think I did good.

Career/ Academic Resolutions

In 2016, I will…

1. Finish my PhD! I know this one is a big point, but it is the main goal for 2016! – Yeah… Still working on it. I will have to finish it until September of this year though.

2. Find a job. With or without finishing my PhD, I need to get a job or paid position soon, because my grant ended this month and now I’m officially unemployed and just a student again, and that sucks.– I did have 2 paid jobs this year, so yay?!

3. Do a short stay in another lab, mainly to learn a couple of techniques that are important for my future job in my area (whatever it turns out to be). – Damn, this one went wrong :(, I would still like to go though…

Personal Resolutions

In 2016, I will…

1. Stop slacking on my Gym attendance…. seriously! – Cof cof… no…

2. Get out of my comfort zone (I’m stealing this one from Kat). – I think I did… a tiny bit…

3. Meet new people. I’m terrible at meeting new people, but I want to change my place of work, and it would be a good opportunity to be a little more sociable. – Again… smallish thing, but yeah, I’m counting this one as a YES.

BOOKISH RESOLUTIONS

In 2017 I will…

1. Read from my shelves. Again… I need to read the books I already own, so I vow to read from my physical and kindle library.

2. Read more fantasy. This year I mostly read New Adult, it allowed me to read a lot, and I loved it, but there are a lot of Fantasy books that I left behind this year and I want to get to them.

3. Respect my TBRs and reads my Netgalley books ON TIME! This one is pretty self explanatory, right?!

4. Read diversely. I actually think I already read pretty diversely, but I’ll try to do even better. With everything going around on the community now, I do think it’s important to pay attention.

BOOK BLOGGING RESOLUTIONS

In 2017 I will…

1. Be better at blog hopping. I need to get back on track and keep tabs on the community’s blogs.

2. Change my blog color scheme. Guys, I need a change, and I’m thinking it will happen soon. I love my mint/pink palette, but I want something more sober, you know? Mainly because I did change my reading habits in this past year, and I want my blog to reflect that.

3. Reach 2000 WordPress followers. I’m not that far, I’m past the number 1750, so let’s see how long it takes…

CAREER/ ACADEMIC RESOLUTIONS

In 2017 I will…

1. Finish my PhD, obviously! As stated above, it really has to happen before September, otherwise I’ll have to change my plan of studies and I don’t want to do that.

2. Find a job… OMG, these are the same as last year, it’s like no time at all has gone by! For real now, I need a job now, before I finish my PhD, so I can actually finish it.

3. Apply for some career making jobs. I’m not talking just to make some money until I finish my degree… I mean post docs in my area, or maybe go on another direction entirely. I’ve been kind of toying with the idea of applying to work at the UN, maybe because the world has gone apeshit… idk…

PERSONAL RESOLUTIONS

In 2017 I will…

1. To not be sick! I’m sorry, this is kind of a joke, eheh. I’ve been sick since before Christmas, and I’ve been feeling terrible, so for the New Year I want to feel normal again, because this flu attacked my lungs and it has not been pretty.

2. Find some self control. This means I need to learn to calm myself, because I can’t go crazy each time Trump or some other asshole does something despicable, or someone says something like “he’s not entirely wrong”… yeah… let’s just say that last time someone told me this I almost took his head off…

3. Travel. This past year I didn’t travel for pleasure, and I missed it. I need to get on a plane and just go and enjoy, because traveling is my favorite thing and I need it to feel 100%.

This is it, I’m done with my resolutions! Now, what about you? What are your resolutions for the coming year?

✨✨✨ Happy New Year!!!! ✨✨✨

Hooked on Trouble (Kelly Siskind)

hookedontrouble

Reality bites. Hard.

The last time Raven did “real” was sixteen months ago, when she spent one unforgettable night with the tattooed, impossibly sexy Nico, and then he disappeared the next day. Since then, she’s kept her guard up and her feelings to herself. She doesn’t have time for relationship drama when she’s busy searching for her long lost sister.

Nico hasn’t stopped thinking about Raven — her sultry curves, inked skin, and the fact that he ditched her after their night together. Now that they’re living in the same city, he knows this is his chance to make things right. What better way to prove to Raven he’s for real than helping her find her sister? But when the lines between right and wrong start to blur, putting his job on the line, Nico has to decide if the risk is worth the ultimate reward.

I’m so happy I got to change to read and review an ARC for Hooked on Trouble. I’ve been in love with Kelly Siskind’s writing since reading Chasing Crazy almost a year ago, and I was lucky enough to review the previous two books of this series, My Perfect Mistake and A Fine Mess.

I’m a big fan of Kelly’s writing, as you must have gathered by now, so no news there. I think the book has a perfect mix of humour and seriousness, though I have to say that I found this to be the least funny book of the series, but it made sense, because both Nico and Raven were pretty intense for most of the book.

I loved both characters, of course I did, but I have to say that they were the ones I connected less in this series. I think my first problem with Raven was the grudge she hold against Nico for so long… I understood her reasons, but… not really?! She knew why he left Aspen back then and the issues with his family, and she just waited for him to call her? That makes me kind of mad… But I did love her passion and her style and her sharped tongue. I also had a slight problem with Nico, although I understood why he was so strict, I found it a bit too much, but I loved his softness and how much he took care of the people he loved. Nico was all soft where Raven was all sharp, and I think they complemented each other quite nicely and had several things in common too.

I really liked the story and the heavy inclusion of family and its importance. I liked to see Nico struggling with everything he thought he had to shoulder, and Raven trying to reconnect with her sister. But it kind of bothered me that they didn’t communicate about some pretty important stuff… And I wish that some things had been tied up better.

I absolutely loved the ending though, seeing everything wrapped up for all the three couples warmed my heart, and I could have done with more bonding moments between the whole gang.

This was a solid conclusion to the Over the Top series – nice going with the series title, btw – and I urge you all to read these books if you love a good romance, lots of great characters and amazing friendships.
