Once again, I read this book as a buddy read with Cátia @The Girl Who Read Too, so go to her blog in the next few days to read her take on this one.
Last year I read Wasted Words, and I really liked Staci Hart’s funny and witty writing, so when I saw this one available, also an adaptation of Jane Austen’s work, I was all for it. A Thousand Letters turned out to be way way more awesome than I was expecting.
The writing of this book is magical! I don’t know how else to describe it. It’s lyrical and amazing and heartfelt, and it left me heartbroken and hopeful, and I LOVED IT! The book is told in dual POV, which is great in and of itself, but their voices were also great. And because the characters had a big connections to literature and poetry, it made it even more beautiful. This book made me want to pick up ALL other books by this author 😀 .
You know the plot of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, right? Guy and girl love each other, they want to marry, girl’s family opposes the union, years later they reconnect with a lot of anger and regret between them, she needs to decide what’s important to her, he needs to let go and forgive.
This one follows much of the same plot line, but extremely well adapted. Both Elliot and Wade live in pain, but deal with it in a very different way. Elliot is submissive, she lives in the background, with a family that never paid any attention to her, and she’s ok with putting her needs and wants in second to everyone else’s. Wade has learned to bury down all his feeling and thoughts, and only show a hard shell of himself, because he thinks that’s who he needs to be.
After 7 years of not seeing each other, they have to learn how to live in each other’s live again, due to Wade’s dad illness. The journey and result of this is heartbreaking and eye opening. And both characters grow up a lot and face their fears. Have I mentioned how amazing the writing of this book is?!
I honestly found this book gorgeous, the plot, resolutions and characters were all very well constructed, and i just loved it.
If you love a good romance, full of angst, with imperfect characters, and a great great writing, pick this one up. You won’t be sorry!
About the Author:
Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life: a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, even though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. Her favorite word starts with f and ends with k.
From roots in Houston, to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s sleeping, cleaning, or designing graphics.
