Hello, welcome back to another Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is:
Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly NOT Want To Read A Book (topic originally done back in 2013) — tell us all your book turn offs!
Oh boy…
1. Iffy blurb
I think we’ve all been through this, right? A bad or dubious blurb is a sure way to turn me off a book. I might rethink it if someone I trust truly likes it though.
2. Horror or Thriller
I’m just not a fan of the genre… I might read something and like it, but it will be highly unlikely.
3. Middle Grade
Again, nothing against it, but at this point in my life, I just don’t connect to it.
4. Love shapes
Look, I’m not saying never, but if the blurb states it as the central thing in a book, no thank you.
5. Blatant DISCRIMINATION
Again, if the blurb of the book makes this clear, NO!
6. Instalove
Instalove is tricky, because I do like it sometimes, but not when the whole book centers on it.
7. Vampires, Zombies, WEREWOLVES, Aliens, etc
It’s usually not really my thing.
8. Self-Help
Look, I’m not bashing it or anything, but they’re totally not my thing, and I never felt the slightest urge to reach for them.
9. Poetry
I’m not saying never. But will I give them a second look at the bookstore? Yeah… noooo…
10. Bad writing
If I haven’t liked an author’s writing style, it’s very unlikely that I’ll reach for another book from that same author…
Totally hear you on the #4 & Romance. If a love story is the central plot to a story, I’m usually going to skip it. I just can’t connect to stories that are solely about romance.
i hear you. I love romance books, but I really don’t like if the “main thing” in the book is a triangle or something 🙂
Haha, agree with some of the points ^_^ I personally like Thrillers, Middle Grade, Vampire, Zombies etc 🙂 But what do you mean with Love Shapes?
eheh, love shapes, as in love triangles, squares and so on. When there’s more than one love interest for a single character
Ah now I understand hahaha.
I couldn’t agree more with you. Love shapes are an instant turn off for me and I’m more likely to run screaming for the hills than picking up a love shape book.
eheh, hear hear. There are some exceptions of course, but if they take too much of the book, it’s a no for me.
UGH instalove is the WORST. I’ve read far too many books that rely on this trope for me to settle reading many more.
yeah, it’s sad that it’s such a huge thing…
Poetry is also not my thing. I know poetry and book written in verses recently has become a thing, but I can’t stand them! They’re hard to understand
i agree. i’m not saying they’re not beautiful, but they’re just not my thing
Definetly not a big fan of thrillers, but it depends what we’re classing as horror for me. Some of the kitch old-school horror really appeals to me but I just can’t with gore and true terror.
My TTT for this week.
eheh, i’m not a fan of either in general 😉
All of these! I would stay away from all of these. Especially the bad writing — which is mostly 3rd person.
My TTT.
oh yeah… for me 3rd person works great on fantasy, sci fi and so on. in contemporary, i like 1st person better 🙂
