Review Blitz: The Upside of Falling (Meghan Quinn)

Tucked away at the base of the Rocky Mountains lived a little boy with one singular dream: leave this broken and battered home and become someone.
Be somebody’s hero.
That boy was me — Colby Brooks. Except I’m not that same little boy anymore.
My dreams might still be the same, but my reality isn’t.
I’m smarter. Stronger. A man.
And I learned a long damn time ago, the only way to achieve my dreams was to avoid distractions — at any cost.
Focus. Resolve. Determination.
But all it took was one single night. One night and my entire life…changed.
One night had me colliding head first with the biggest distraction of my life; Rory Oaks.
Smart. Charming. Beautiful.
Rory changed everything.
Quickly, my one-track mind started to bend.
Each kiss faded decade-long dreams.
And with one single incident, I fly off course.

Review:

This was a very different book from other Meghan Quinn’s stories that I’ve read before. It has a lot less humour, and maybe even a bit less focused on the sexy times (though it still has plenty of those to go around), but the writing is more poetic, and more breathtaking too. It’s beautiful, and though I love her humour, I liked this one just as well.

I loved the romance and the characters. Colby’s background is so sad, and he’s such an amazing person, and I just wanted to reach into his early life and beat the crap out of everyone who hurt him. He goes through such an amazing character development in this book, opening his heart and his mind, and letting himself feel and dream.

I loved Rory as well, she was also an amazing girl and an amazing human being. She has such a difficult home life, and she still looked at everything with a smile on her face and an open heart. She’s amazing and strong.

These 2 together were explosive. The chemistry was there from the first moment, and even though there is a bit of insta-something, they develop their relationship, and you understand their bond and believe in it.

Unfortunately, knowing this is a duet, and knowing what they’re both facing, I knew from the start that this book wasn’t going to end well. But I could also see some things coming, and I was kind of disappointed with them, to be honest. I was hoping that Meghan Quinn wouldn’t go there, but she did. I’m not gonna hate on it, because I think the next book will surprise me and this is all going to make sense. But at this point, I’m not happy about that ending. I wanted heartbreak, but I felt like the ending was a bit cliché. Please prove me wrong, Meghan!

One thing that I was expecting a bit more of, was Colby’s background. We get a few chapters of his childhood, but they stop around 60% of the book, and I was hoping we would get more of those little insights. Another thing that I needed, and I hope we’ll get on the second book, is the “resolution” of some of Colby’s past, or some sort of explanation.

But as you can see, I loved this one. I can’t wait for the second book on this duet, because that ending killed me and I need to know how it’s going to end.

Excerpt:

Head turned down, pushing the sleeves of his white Henley up his arms, he swaggers toward me. His jeans hang low on his hips, held up by the same brown belt he wore the other night. His narrow waist directs my eyes to the center of his jeans, and I can’t help wonder what might be behind the crotch of his pants.

And then there is his chest. Barrel like, broad and prominent. His thick biceps showcase his strength, and the fabric of his shirt stretches over his shoulders and forearms. Having spent a lot of time at the gym, I’ve seen every body type, but Colby’s is different. He’s strong, built, but not like a body builder. His body seems to suggest the only kind of weight he’s been lifting is his own body, pushup after pushup. I can’t imagine there being barbells in his workouts, but I can imagine logs, cadets, and heavy machinery. He has working muscles, the kind you earn from hard, dedicated work on the field. In a word? Impressive.

Walking up to Stryder, he grips his friend’s shoulder and says something into his ear. A smirk crosses Stryder’s face before he moves over to our side of the bowling alley and takes Colby’s place.

Is he leaving? Already?

Might as well at this point. It’s not like he’s going to talk to me, not after my pathetic attempt at a bet. I should have known I was going to hang out in the gutter all night. It’s where I usually am when I’m bowling. I blame the ball. The thing has a vendetta against me.

Sighing, I prop my chin in my hand and watch Stryder expertly toss his ball down the lane, getting a strike . . . once again. And just like every other strike, he pumps his arm up in the air and celebrates. We get it, you’re good, no need to—

“Hey.”

That voice . . .

Stunned, eyes wide, not able to move, not wanting to scare him away, I keep my eyes trained forward, soaking in that beautifully deep voice of his for a brief moment before saying, “Hey.”

“Can I sit here?”

Still keeping my eyes trained forward, I say, “Sure.”

My body tingles with awareness of how close he is to me, that fresh laundry scent invading my senses, prickling the little hairs on my arm. My body leans toward his, wanting a little more, searching for anything else he might give me. I don’t know why he’s choosing to engage me in conversation, but I’m sure as hell not moving while he does.

“Sorry about tonight,” he says and he actually sounds sincere.

“Why are you sorry?” I mumble.

Reaching around, he takes my cheek in his hand. The calluses on his palm rubbing against my skin is a welcome sensation. As I’m turned toward him, I steady my breathing. I’m having a hard time slowing my heart rate because of his close proximity, and the unexpected touch shooting a wave of heat through my veins.

“I’m sorry you didn’t get to ask me any questions. I didn’t think you were going to suck that bad.” A playful smile tugs at his lips, and my heart sinks to the floor. Oh God, he’s so gorgeous, especially when he smiles.

Matching his smirk, I say, “I didn’t think I was going to suck that bad either.”

“I feel bad.”

“You should.” That garners a laugh, deep and throaty, the sound cloaking me like a shield, protecting me from the outside world, bringing me into a little bubble where we are the only two that exist.

“Ask me a question.”

Shocked, I swallow hard and say, “Really?”

He nods and holds up his fingers. “You get three.”

“Oh, three? Wow, I feel like you just gave me the key to your soul.”

Rolling his eyes, he adjusts his stance on the barstool and leans back, giving us some space, our knees still knocking into each other. “Easy killer; it’s just three questions.”

“Yeah, three questions I didn’t have before.” Tapping my chin, I try to think of good questions, but now that I have him willing and waiting, nothing comes to mind. I wasn’t prepared for this, he caught me off-guard, and now I feel I can’t be strategic about my probing. “Hmm . . . what do you like to do on the weekends?”

“Jump,” he answers.

Searching his eyes, lips quirked, I say, “Uh, you’re going to have to be more specific than that. What kind of jumping are we talking here? Like jump roping? Because that seems kind of weird to do on the weekends, and if you tell me you’re in some kind of jump-roping club at the academy, I’m not going to believe you.”

His lips curve up as he scratches the side of his jaw. “Jump out of airplanes.”

Oh.

Oh.

That’s . . .

Uh, that’s really hot.

“So you just casually jump out of airplanes?”

“I’m part of the Wings of Blue, the academy’s parachute team. We jump every day, at least two to three times a day after class and before dinner, depending on wind and ceiling limits. On the weekends, some of the guys, including Stryder and me, go to Springs East Airport and do civilian jumps. The more jumps we get in, the higher the chance we’ll be considered for big demonstrations, like parachuting into football games and major sporting events for the Rockies and Broncos.” Ummmm. Did anyone else just hear how many words he gifted me? And seriously? Does the man have no clue how incredibly sexy he is when he talks about something he loves? The expression on his face . . .

“Wow, that’s . . . that’s really hot.” I chuckle. “Sorry, I don’t mean to fangirl over your parachuting, but I guess I wasn’t expecting that answer. You just jump out of planes?”

He slowly nods. “Every day.”

“Anything to get you up in the clouds, huh?”

“Yeah,” he answers shyly, rubbing his jaw. “Okay, next question.”

The Varlet and the Voyeur (L.H. Cosway & Penny Reid)

BANNER-BlogTour.jpg

The Varlet and the Voyeur, an all-new standalone in the USA Today bestselling Rugby Series from Penny Reid and L.H. Cosway is available NOW!

Review:

He kept his salacious secret for years. But soon, everyone is going to be reading about it in their morning paper…

THE VARLET (and the VOYEUR)
William Moore is a long way from home. A farm boy from Oklahoma, he’s now the most well-respected member of the Irish rugby team. But appearances are often deceptive, and Will isn’t the clean-cut, all-American good-guy everyone imagines him to be. He’s got a secret, one that will tarnish his reputation forever.

THE VOYEUR (and the VARLET)
Josey Kavanagh is a self-proclaimed mess, but she’s finally getting her shi… uh, act together. She’s set her sights on becoming a veterinarian, but there’s one teeny tiny road bump. Her living arrangements are coming to an abrupt end, leaving Josey homeless and in need of a job to pay her way through college.

THE PLAN
What he needs is a companion to keep him on the right path.

What she needs is an apartment with free rent.
Will is convinced Josey will make the perfect companion, since she’s brutally honest and basically ‘just one of the guys.’ Josey is convinced she can ensure Will doesn’t succumb to his voyeuristic proclivities by keeping a scrupulous eye on him.
Except, what happens when the varlet is tempted by the voyeur, and vice-versa?!
Perchance something very, very volatile. And vexing.

The Varlet and the Voyeur is a full-length romantic comedy novel, can be read as a standalone, and is the 4th (and last) book in the USA TODAY bestselling Rugby Series.

Guys, I’m so happy about this book! I have to say, I didn’t feel like the story was perfect, but the main characters stole my heart, and made me enjoy it even more.

Having already read/listened to the rest of the series, I already knew that I was going to love the writing on this one, and I was not disappointed. I found this one even funnier. Like the remaining books in the series, this one is told in dual POV, first person, and Will and Josey have super different voices, and it was so enjoyable to get the characters depth through their voices.

I loved Josey. I loved how loud she was, how she was so awkward and lacked social skills, I loved how she said whatever she was thinking. I saw myself in some of her traits to be honest. She just came through as genuine, and I couldn’t get enough of her.

On the other hand… I also loved Will. Yep, even though he was the opposite of Josey in so many ways, I loved how unapologetic he was about his beliefs and his choices. I have to admit though, that given his hangups and his trauma, I was expecting what happened to him in the past to be very very serious, and was a little disappointed by what it was revealed to be. But either way, I really liked him, and I appreciated how honest he was about what he needed.

These 2 really understood and got each other, and I really liked that there was no judgment from either side. There was a friendship before anything else, and I felt like the development of the romance was very well achieved.

I liked the plot for the most part, though I wish there had been more communication at some points. But I did understand the fear that both characters had at one point or the other. I couldn’t fully grasp Will’s trauma, like I mentioned above, but I tried to understand it.

LIVE02.jpg

Overall, it’s an amazing addition to this series, and I really enjoyed the new romance, as well as the opportunity to glimpse all the other couples in the series. So, guys, read this one, but enter it with an absolutely open mind. Give it a try.

Excerpt:

*Will*

When I saw how spotless the shared living space was, I allowed my curiosity to get the better of me and peeked my head into her bathroom, Rocky dancing around my feet as I entered the space. The counters were covered in woman-products, but the marble surface and sink were free of water spots, and the glass of the shower had been wiped clean.

I glanced at Rocky. He glanced at me. Bemused, I chuckled to myself, about to turn back to the door, and that’s when I spotted it.

A dildo.

A big, Pyrex dildo.

With ridges.

In the shower.

I froze, blinked, and I stared at it, my brain sluggish. Oddly, I had to remind myself to breathe. Likely because I was . . .

I was—

I was shocked.

I shook myself, tearing my eyes from it and rubbing my chest where an odd kind of pang was spreading mild warmth up my neck.

But why was I shocked?

Why should I be surprised?

Despite my never seeing her that way, Josey was a woman and women have needs.

Don’t they?

I hadn’t grown up around women — any women. My mother died when she had my youngest brother. My grandmother died before I was born. I had no sisters. We lived on a farm, way out in BFN Oklahoma.

Girls — women — and their bodies were sacred lands of the unknown to us Moore boys.

Unbidden — completely unbidden — an image of Josey flashed through my mind’s eye. Her full lips parted, her big eyes closed, causing her thick black lashes to catch droplets of water before they dripped over her sharp cheekbones. Her head would be lolled back as shower spray melted bubbles of slippery soap, sliding down her bare skin as they dissolved. Her legs would be parted, and maybe one hand would be braced against the wall of the shower while the other moved in a steady rhythm.

Holding that huge, glass dildo.

I swallowed a sudden rush of salvia and, unable to help myself, I leaned closer to the sex toy, examining it and comparing its size against my own.

I was bigger.

But not by much.

And for some reason, this realization made me instantly hard.

Crap.

Of course I knew Josey was a woman, but until this moment, I’d never really thought of her that way. Not even the tampon-mountain drove the point home. Up until this point, she was someone I liked as a person, someone who made me laugh, who was smart and compassionate, someone around whom I felt completely comfortable. A good — no, a great companion.

She was still all of those things, except—

Except now I’ve pictured her naked.

Blog Tour: Cry Baby (Ginger Scott)

We’re celebrating the release of CRY BABY by Ginger Scott! One-Click today!

Tristan Lopez is loyal to his brothers. He doesn’t really have a choice, born into a gang that has a chokehold on every kid that roams its streets. He gave his life to them willingly, knowing if he did then one day this kingdom, led by boys drunk with power and ruled by fear, would all be his.

He was loyal through it all. Loyal when prison took his dad away. Loyal when his face was touched by the cold metal of the rival gang’s gun. Loyal even though his mom begged him to run the moment she returned home from rehab.

He thought about becoming someone else. It was hard not to crave the life of a regular 17-year-old. It’s the only reason he stayed in school — to pretend. But he always fell back in line.

Loyal.

Riley Rojas didn’t belong in Tristan’s real world. She should have only been part of the fantasy, one of the many faces he got to pretend with amidst rows of metal chairs and desks and whiteboards with assignments. But there she was, moving boxes from the back of an old pick-up into a house Tristan had shot up on a dare with his friends only a few months before.

Tall enough to look him in the eyes and strong enough to fill his shadow, Riley took up space on his streets, her loud mouth fearless in the face of the gang leaders who terrified everyone else. She pushed Tristan around on the hard court, and she balled better than his friends — better than him sometimes. She challenged him. She needed him. He liked it. And when her pale blue eyes stared into his, he quit wanting to pretend.

He couldn’t ask her to leave because she’d only dig her heels in deeper. He couldn’t ask because he didn’t want her to go. She was blurring his lines. She was testing his loyalty.

He was falling in love.

And it was going to tear him apart.

As you can imagine, this was yet another book I’ve loved from Ginger Scott. Her writing once again is beyond beautiful and compelling.

I loved the theme of this book, because it’s so raw and hard and overall gut wrenching. This book deals with gangs, gang related violence, and the lack of choices some people are born into. I felt like Ginger Scott created such a great character with Tristan. He was so good and it was impossible not to love him, but, it was also impossible to be entirely comfortable with his choices. He grew so much during this book, learning to be his own person, and make decisions he can live with. I loved Tristan, he’s one of my favorite heroes ever.

Riley… I loved Riley, her sassiness and determination, the way she knew what she wanted. But, she sometimes made things harder than they should be, and I know that was part of her personality and all, but given the situation and what was around her, it made her reckless, and I wanted to slap her sometimes.

I really appreciate the huge inclusion of family. Even though both parents on this book worked a lot, they both tried to be there for their children, even if in different ways. And they were huge parts of their lives.

Now, the only thing I’m gonna say that is negative, is that I wanted more relationship development, especially between Riley and Tristan. They spend a lot of time bickering and stuff, but there’s more things that are not said, than the ones that are. They became such integral parts of each other’s lives, that I wanted more development that lead to that.

Like I said before, the plot is amazing, and it’s a story that pulls on your heartstrings. But that ending? That ending killed me… I needed more, and I still can’t believe that that’s how it ended 😦 .

So people, go read this book NOW, you won’t regret it. But prepare the tissues and be ready for the heartbreak.

Review:

I’ll say this about Christian — he made one hell of a first impression.
When I first saw the strapping man, he was doing handstands naked on a dock along the canal. His crown jewels were far more entertaining than anything else I’d seen on the boat tour, so I did what any curious woman would do — I took his photo. I might have looked at the shot a few dozen times. Little did I know I’d meet him again, a year later, at a secret garden bar in the heart of the city, where I’d learn that his mind and his mouth were even more captivating.

But given the way my heart had been trampled, I wanted only a simple deal — No strings. No expectations.

Our arrangement worked well enough until the day I needed a lot more from him…

***

Let me just say, this whole part-time lover thing was her idea. I’d have gone all-in from the start, but hey, when a gorgeous, brilliant woman invites you into her bed, and only her bed…well, I said yes.

But then, one hysterical phone call from my brother later, begging me to find myself a wife so grandfather’s business stays in the family, and I need a promotion with Elise. Turns out a full-time husband suits her needs too, and a temporary marriage of convenience ought to do the trick, until we can simply untie the knot…

As long as no one finds out…
As long as no one gets hurt…
As long as no one falls in love…

But our ending was one I never saw coming.

By now you guys know I love love love audiobooks, and I’m always excited to listen to one of Lauren Blakely’s books. Not only because she’s the author who made me love audiobooks, but because I usually love ALL of her books. This one was no exception.

I’m really happy to see more of Christian and Elise, who are first introduced in Wanderlust, and to finally know the story behind both characters. And like the previous book, this one draws you in with the descriptions of the stores, the streets, and the smells, of Paris, Copenaghen and New York. I really like this, and it works even better in audio form.

I adored both main characters, especially Christian… I liked that he understood his feelings and pursued what he wanted. Elise was a perfect counterpart for Christian, she had such hard limits and high walls, but she wanted to be open and herself, but just too scared to be able to do it. They support each other, and they both grow up a lot, mainly Elise.

Fake relationships turned real is one troupe I like, and it was super well done here. The whole plot was very entertaining and enjoyable. I was only expecting a bit more from the whole thing with Erik’s wife… and I’m wondering if that was the last we’ll see of him?!

So, guys, get on board with this one. Another fantastic read from Lauren Blakely.

“From the beautiful backdrop to the witty dialogue and the heartwarming romance, Part-time Lover is a keeper.”
