Musical Mondays: Scars To Your Beautiful by Alessia Cara

musicalmondays_gold

I listened to this song today for the first time, and it’s just so beautiful that it’s worth sharing. 🙂

She just wants to be beautiful
She goes unnoticed, she knows no limits
She craves attention, she praises an image
She prays to be sculpted by the sculptor
Oh, she don’t see the light that’s shining
Deeper than the eyes can find it
Maybe we have made her blind
So she tries to cover up her pain and cut her woes away
‘Cause cover girls don’t cry after their face is made

But there’s a hope that’s waiting for you in the dark
You should know you’re beautiful just the way you are
And you don’t have to change a thing, the world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we’re stars and we’re beautiful
Oh-oh, oh-oh
And you don’t have to change a thing, yhe world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we’re stars and we’re beautiful

She has dreams to be an envy, so she’s starving
You know, covergirls eat nothing
She says beauty is pain and there’s beauty in everything
What’s a little bit of hunger?
I could go a little while longer, she fades away
She don’t see her perfect, she don’t understand she’s worth it
Or that beauty goes deeper than the surface
Oh, oh
So to all the girls that’s hurting
Let me be your mirror, help you see a little bit clearer
The light that shines within

There’s a hope that’s waiting for you in the dark
You should know you’re beautiful just the way you are
And you don’t have to change a thing, the world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we’re stars and we’re beautiful

Oh-oh, oh-oh
And you don’t have to change a thing, the world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we’re stars and we’re beautiful

No better you than the you that you are (no better you than the you that you are)
No better life than the life we’re living (no better life than the life we’re living)
No better time for your shine, you’re a star (no better time for your shine, you’re a star)
Oh, you’re beautiful, oh, you’re beautiful

And there’s a hope that’s waiting for you in the dark
You should know you’re beautiful just the way you are
And you don’t have to change a thing, the world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we’re stars and we’re beautiful
Oh-oh, oh-oh
And you don’t have to change a thing, the world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we’re stars and we’re beautiful

Musical Mondays: Let’s Hurt Tonight by OneRepublic

musicalmondays_gold

I just came from the movies, and I watched Collateral Beauty, and cried my eyes out in there, and fell in love with this song in the process… Have you guys seen the movie?

When, when we came home
Worn to the bones
I told myself, “This could get rough.”

And when, when I was off,
Which happened a lot
You came to me and said, “That’s enough.”

Oh, I know that this love is pain
But we can’t cut it from out these veins,
No

So I’ll get the lights and you lock the doors
We ain’t leaving this room ’til we both feel more
Don’t walk away, don’t roll your eyes
They say love is pain. Well, darling, let’s hurt tonight

When, when you came home
Worn to the bones
I told myself, “This could be rough.”

Oh, I know you’re feeling insane
Tell me something that I can explain,
Oh

I’ll hit the lights and you lock the doors
Tell me all of the things that you couldn’t before
Don’t walk away, don’t roll your eyes
They say love is pain. Well, darling, let’s hurt tonight
If this love is pain. Well, darling, let’s hurt, oh, tonight

So you hit the lights and I’ll lock the doors
Let’s say all of the things that we couldn’t before
Won’t walk away, won’t roll my eyes
They say love is pain. Well, darling, let’s hurt tonight
If this love is pain, then, honey, let’s love tonight

Musical Mondays: Freedom! by George Michael

musicalmondays

It was a sad day yesterday, learning that George Michael had passed away. 😦 So, today’s music had to be a tribute to him, because I’ve always loved him as an artist. I grew up listening to Wham and George Michael. And I’m so incredibly sad that he has passed away… 😦

I won’t let you down
I will not give you up
Gotta have some faith in the sound
It’s the one good thing that I’ve got
I won’t let you down
So please don’t give me up
‘Cause I would really, really love to stick around, oh yeah

Heaven knows I was just a young boy
Didn’t know what I wanted to be
I was every little hungry schoolgirl’s pride and joy
And I guess it was enough for me
To win the race? A prettier face!
Brand new clothes and a big fat place
On your rock and roll TV
But today the way I play the game is not the same
No way
Think I’m gonna get myself happy

I think there’s something you should know
I think it’s time I told you so
There’s something deep inside of me
There’s someone else I’ve got to be
Take back your picture in a frame
Take back your singing in the rain
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don’t belong to you
And you don’t belong to me yea yea
Freedom
Freedom
Freedom
You’ve gotta give for what you take
Freedom
Freedom
Freedom
You’ve gotta give for what you take

Heaven knows we sure had some fun boy
What a kick just a buddy and me
We had every big shot good-time band on the run boy
We were living in a fantasy
We won the race
Got out of the place
I went back home got a brand new face
For the boys on MTV
But today the way I play the game has got to change
Oh yeah
Now I’m gonna get myself happy

I think there’s something you should know
I think it’s time I stopped the show
There’s something deep inside of me
There’s someone I forgot to be
Take back your picture in a frame
Don’t think that I’ll be back again
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don’t belong to you
And you don’t belong to me, yea yea
Freedom
Freedom
Freedom
You’ve gotta give for what you take
Freedom
Freedom
Freedom
You’ve gotta give for what you take

Well it looks like the road to heaven
But it feels like the road to hell
When I knew which side my bread was buttered
I took the knife as well
Posing for another picture
Everybody’s got to sell
But when you shake your ass
They notice fast
And some mistakes were built to last

That’s what you get
That’s what you get
That’s what you get
I say that’s what you get
That’s what you get for changing your mind
That’s what you get for changing your mind

That’s what you get
That’s what you get
And after all this time
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes
Do not make the man

All we have to do now is take these lies
And make them true somehow
All we have to see is that i don’t belong to you
And you don’t belong to me yea yea
Freedom
Freedom
Freedom
You’ve got to give for what you take
Freedom
Freedom
Freedom
You’ve got to give for what you take
Yea you’ve got to give for what you, give for what you give

May not be what you want from me
Just the way it’s got to be
Lose the face now
I’ve got to live I’ve got to live

Musical Mondays: No Regrets by MAGIC!

musicalmondays

I listened to this song today for the first time, and I fell in love with it. Kat @Life and Other Disasters featured it in her post today, so… check it out here.

The world isn’t over yet
We’ve still got a chance to place our bets
We both made a little mess
Nothing our two hearts can’t put back
I’ll never love you less
Don’t let your worries second guess
We’ll start over fresh, living a life with no regrets
Living a life with no regrets

I’ve got my issues, I admit that
You got some fears that hold you back
But we are acting like we’re children
Looking to blame for what we lack

Before we lose everything we have tomorrow
Can we forget what went wrong yesterday, darling

The world isn’t over yet
We’ve still got a chance to place our bets
We both made a little mess
Nothing our two hearts can’t put back
I’ll never love you less
Don’t let your worries second guess
We’ll start over fresh, living a life with no regrets
Living a life with no regrets

I know you’re driving yourself crazy
Thinking that time has passed you by
You’re not lost where you said you’d be
But tell me, who is in this lie?

Before we lose everything we have tomorrow
Can we forget what went wrong yesterday, so darling

The world isn’t over yet
We’ve still got a chance to place our bets
We both made a little mess
Nothing our two hearts can’t put back
I’ll never love you less
Don’t let your worries second guess
We’ll start over fresh, living a life with no regrets
Living a life with no regrets

The world isn’t over yet
We can always start over
No weight on our shoulder
The world isn’t over, darling
The world isn’t over yet
We can always start over
No weight on our shoulder
Living a life with no regrets
Life with no regret

Musical Mondays: Wait for it by Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton Original Broadway Cast)

musicalmondays

I’m still riding the Hamilton train… not sorry at all… 😀

This one is for Kat @Life and Other Disasters, because she loves it (and Burr  😛 ).

Theodosia writes me a letter everyday
I’m keeping the bed warm while her husband is away
He’s on the British side in Georgia
He’s trying to keep the colonies in line
But he can keep all of Georgia
Theodosia, she’s mine

Love doesn’t discriminate
Between the sinners
And the saints
It takes and it takes and it takes
And we keep loving anyway
We laugh and we cry
And we break
And we make our mistakes
And if there’s a reason I’m by her side
When so many have tried
Then I’m willing to wait for it
I’m willing to wait for it

My grandfather was a fire and brimstone preacher

But there are things that the homilies and hymns won’t teach ya

My mother was a genius

My father commanded respect

When they died they left no instructions
Just a legacy to protect

Death doesn’t discriminate
Between the sinners
And the saints
It takes and it takes and it takes
And we keep living anyway
We rise and we fall
And we break
And we make our mistakes
And if there’s a reason I’m still alive
When everyone who loves me has died
I’m willing to wait for it
I’m willing to wait for it

Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it

I am the one thing in life I can control

Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it

I am inimitable
I am an original

Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it

I’m not falling behind or running late

Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it

I’m not standing still
I am lying in wait

Wait
Wait
Wait

Hamilton faces an endless uphill climb

Climb
Climb
Climb

He has something to prove
He has nothing to lose

Lose
Lose
Lose
Lose

Hamilton’s pace is relentless
He wastes no time

Time
Time
Time

What is it like in his shoes?

Hamilton doesn’t hesitate
He exhibits no restraint
He takes and he takes and he takes
And he keeps winning anyway
He changes the game
He plays and he raises the stakes
And if there’s a reason
He seems to thrive when so few survive, then Goddamnit

I’m willing to wait for it

I’m willing to wait for it

Life doesn’t discriminate
Between the sinners and the saints
It takes and it takes and it takes

We rise and we fall
He play and he raises the stakes

And if there’s a reason I’m still alive
When so many have died
Then I’m willin’ to

Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait

Musical Mondays: My Shot by Lin-Manuel Miranda & Hamilton Original Broadway Cast

musicalmondays

I’ve finally succumbed to the Hamilton craziness… yep, I did, so I’ve been listening to it nonstop for the last few days. So Musical Mondays is gonna feature a song from there, of course ;).

I am not throwing away my shot
I am not throwing away my shot
Hey yo, I’m just like my country
I’m young, scrappy and hungry
And I’m not throwing away my shot
I’m ‘a get a scholarship to King’s College
I prob’ly shouldn’t brag, but dag, I amaze and astonish
The problem is I got a lot of brains but no polish
I gotta holler just to be heard
With every word, I drop knowledge
I’m a diamond in the rough, a shiny piece of coal
Tryin’ to reach my goal my power of speech, unimpeachable
Only nineteen but my mind is older
These New York City streets get colder, I shoulder
Every burden, every disadvantage
I have learned to manage, I don’t have a gun to brandish
I walk these streets famished
The plan is to fan this spark into a flame
But damn, it’s getting dark, so let me spell out the name
I am the A-L-E-X-A-N-D-E-R we are meant to be

A colony that runs independently
Meanwhile, Britain keeps shittin’ on us endlessly
Essentially, they tax us relentlessly
Then King George turns around, runs a spending spree
He ain’t ever gonna set his descendants free
So there will be a revolution in this century
Enter me, he says in parentheses

Don’t be shocked when your hist’ry book mentions me
I will lay down my life if it sets us free
Eventually, you’ll see my ascendancy

And I am not throwing away my shot
I am not throwing away my shot
Hey yo, I’m just like my country
I’m young, scrappy and hungry
And I’m not throwing away my shot

I am not throwing away my shot
I am not throwing away my shot
Hey yo, I’m just like my country
I’m young, scrappy and hungry
And I’m not throwing away my shot
It’s time to take a shot

I dream of life without a monarchy
The unrest in France will lead to onarchy?
Onarchy how you say, how you say, anarchy?
When I fight, I make the other side panicky
With my, shot

Yo, I’m a tailor’s apprentice
And I got y’all knuckleheads in loco parentis
I’m joining the rebellion ’cause I know it’s my chance
To socially advance, instead of sewin’ some pants
I’m gonna take a shot

But we’ll never be truly free
Until those in bondage have the same rights as you and me
You and I. Do or die. Wait till I sally in
On a stallion with the first black battalion
Have another shot

Geniuses, lower your voices
You keep out of trouble and you double your choices
I’m with you, but the situation is fraught
You’ve got to be carefully taught
If you talk, you’re gonna get shot

Burr, check what we got
Mister Lafayette, hard rock like Lancelot
I think your pants look hot
Laurens, I like you a lot
Let’s hatch a plot blacker than the kettle callin’ the pot
What are the odds the gods would put us all in one spot
Poppin’ a squat on conventional wisdom, like it or not
A bunch of revolutionary manumission abolitionists?
Give me a position, show me where the ammunition is

Oh, am I talkin’ too loud?
Sometimes I get over excited, shoot off at the mouth
I never had a group of friends before
I promise that I’ll make y’all proud

Let’s get this guy in front of a crowd

I am not throwing away my shot
I am not throwing away my shot
Hey yo, I’m just like my country
I’m young, scrappy and hungry
And I’m not throwing away my shot

I am not throwing away my shot
I am not throwing away my shot
Hey yo, I’m just like my country
I’m young, scrappy and hungry
And I’m not throwing away my shot

Everybody sing
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa
Ay, let ‘em hear ya

Let’s go

Whoa, whoa, whoa I said shout it to the rooftops
Whoa, whoa, whoa said, to the rooftops
Whoa, whoa, whoa come on

Come on, let’s go
Rise up
When you’re living on your knees, you rise up
Tell your brother that he’s gotta rise up
Tell your sister that she’s gotta rise up

When are these colonies gonna rise up?
When are these colonies gonna rise up?
When are these colonies gonna rise up?
When are these colonies gonna rise up?

Rise up
I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory
When’s it gonna get me?
In my sleep, seven feet ahead of me?
If I see it comin’, do I run or do I let it be?
Is it like a beat without a melody?
See, I never thought I’d live past twenty
Where I come from some get half as many
Ask anybody why we livin’ fast and we laugh, reach for a flask
We have to make this moment last, that’s plenty

Scratch that this is not a moment, it’s the movement
Where all the hungriest brothers with something to prove went?
Foes oppose us, we take an honest stand
We roll like Moses, claimin’ our promised land
And? If we win our independence?
‘Zat a guarantee of freedom for our descendants?
Or will the blood we shed begin an endless cycle of vengeance and death with no defendants?
I know the action in the street is excitin’
But Jesus, between all the bleedin’ ‘n fightin’
I’ve been readin’ ‘n writin’
We need to handle our financial situation
Are we a nation of states what’s the state of our nation?
I’m past patiently waitin’ I’m passionatelymashin’ every expectation
Every action’s an act of creation
I’m laughin’ in the face of casualties and sorrow
For the first time, I’m thinkin’ past tomorrow

And I am not throwing away my shot
I am not throwing away my shot
Hey yo, I’m just like my country
I’m young, scrappy and hungry
And I’m not throwing away my shot

We’re gonna rise up (time to take a shot)
We’re gonna rise up (time to take a shot)
We’re gonna, rise up, rise up

It’s time to take a shot
Rise up, rise up, it’s time to take a shot
Rise up, it’s time to take a shot
Rise up, take a shot, shot, shot
It’s time to take a shot, time to take a shot
And I am not throwing away my shot
Not throwing away my shot

Musical Mondays: Hallelujah by Kate McKinnon

musicalmondays

This has been a sad sad week, so I thought it appropriate to share song. This week on Saturday Night Live Kate McKinnon, who played the role of Hillary Clinton, performed Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” as not only a tribute to his passing, but also to the lost of the elections.

Now I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don’t even know the name
But if I did, well really, what’s it to you?
There’s a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn’t matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn’t much
I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch
I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I’ll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

I’ll also share here the Leonard Cohen version… beautiful:
