Book Traveling Thursdays: A Favorite Book

btt

Hello, welcome back to another Book Traveling 168709Thursdays, which a weekly meme created by Cátia @The Girl Who Read Too Much and Danielle @Danielle’s Book Blog. The goal is to share the covers of a book related to that week’s theme, which you can see at the Goodreads group, indicating the original cover, the one of your country, your favorite and least favorite.

This week’s theme is “World Book Day is in a couple of days! Choose one of your all-time favorite books“. I could go with so many… but not all of them have that many covers, so I’m settling with Heir of Fire, because Aelin and Rowan rock (and QoS doesn’t have that many covers…).

Original COver:

I really like the US cover of this book. I like to colors of the different books.

COVER FROM MY COUNTRY (PORTUGAL) & COVER FROM THE COUNTRY I LIVE IN (SPAIN):

No covers for either country… sorry!

Favorite COVER(s):

My favorite cover is for sure the UK one. I love love love these UK covers, and they look so gorgeous on my shelf.

LEAST FAVORITE COVER(s):

There aren’t that many different covers for this one, but I really don’t like the Dutch and Russian editions, especially the Dutch one. Is it just me or that girl looks like an Elf from The Lord of The Rings?!

Book Traveling Thursdays: A Book With a Badass Heroine

This week’s theme is “It was International Women’s Day!! Choose a book with a badass heroine“.  People, I tried to look at different books, I did, but ultimately I have to go back to Celaena Sardothien on this one (even if I think that Aelin is much more badass than Celaena…). So, Throne of Glass it is.

Original COver:

This is one of those cases where I’m just so freaking glad that they changed the cover design after the first book, because this cover was not good.

COVER FROM MY COUNTRY (PORTUGAL) & COVER FROM THE COUNTRY I LIVE IN (SPAIN):

I’m so glad that the portuguese edition used the UK cover design, but I’m not a fan of the red letters. About the spanish cover… hmmm, I honestly thought this was a temporary design, but I guess not. It’s beautifully simplistic though.

Favorite COVER(s):

My favorite cover, without a doubt, is the UK edition, and I’m so glad I own it :D. This book (like the rest of this series) is just gorgeous! But that Dutch edition is kind of beautiful, right? I like it!

LEAST FAVORITE COVER(s):

Ok, these are some pretty bad ones. The worst, in my opinion, is the hebraic edition… I mean, what even? Then the Turkish is just a bit weird, but still it’s the least bad of the three. The Romanian cover is something that I don’t even understand.

The Book Love Tag

lovetag

Hello guys! Today I’m doing a Valentine’s themed book tag created by Anette @Anette Reads, who was super cool to tag me. If you haven’t checked out her blog yet, I suggest that you do it ;-). Ok, let’s do The Book Love Tag!

1. Your favorite book couple.

THIS.IS.SO.HARD!!!!

I have too many! I’m going to go with Warner and Juliette from the Shatter Me trilogy. Ignite Me was perfection for me just because of these two <3!!!

2. Your top 3 book boy/girlfriends.

▫ Jem Carstairs (The Infernal Devices) – Jem was the first!

▫ Rowan Whitethorne (Throne of Glass series) – Made the list as soon as he appeared in Heir of Fire :D.

▫ Garrett Graham (The Deal) – This is a recent one… but what can I say? 😍😍😍

3. Imagine your favorite book couple. Who would propose, and how? (If there’s already been a proposal: who would be more into organizing the wedding?)

Back to Warnette then… ok Warner would totally propose – I’m not sure that Juliette even understands the concept fully. In my mind, he has had the ring for ages, but instead of doing it “right”, he would just blurt it out, in the most awkward and incoherent way possibly, probably during or after sex (because they spend most of their time in bed anyway). That’s how I imagine it :D. It would be cute as hell though, because it’s Warner, and Juliette is everything to him.

4. Unpopular opinions time! Name a popular pairing you can’t stand.

Oh, wow. I don’t think I have an answer for this one… how about I tell you a couple that I do like, but not as much as 99% of the people do? Will that work? Ok then… Celaena and Sam Cortland. I loved them together, sure, but I don’t think they were right for each other at all. That’s why I’m kind of glad that he died… =/

5. What’s your favorite and least favorite romance trope?

Oh my gosh… I have so many favorites!!! I’m a sucker for enemies turned lovers though, and if there’s a step in the middle where they are super friends, all the better. Wallbanger and The Deal do this so good! That’s probably why I loved both books so much :D.

My least favorite is probably insta-love. It’s not that I don’t like it, if done well, it can totally work, because people are attracted to each other at first sight. But more often than not is not done very well :(.

6. Do you ship non-canon couples often? Name some if you do.

I usually don’t. I’ve a very canon type of girl :D. I did ship Haymitch and Effie on The Hunger Games trilogy, so I was super glad that one particular scene was added to Mockingjay pt 2. I was also shipping Rowaelin when they were still claiming to be friends and nothing more, but I was so sure that it would evolve :D.

7. Your opinion on love triangles. Go!

Love triangles… hmmmm…. if done right, I love them! The problem for me is when it’s so obvious that one of the members is just a filler.

8. Favorite and least favorite love triangle?

My absolutely favorite, obviously, is Will/Tessa/Jem triangle of The Infernal Devices. I love it! It’s so well done, because both guys are equally deserving, and you totally understand what she sees in each of them. Better yet, Jem and Will love each other, they love each other so much that they’re more than willing to step aside to let the other one be happy. ❤ I love them!

jem_will_tessa

Least favorite… hmmmm…. The Hunger Games? What was even that? Why was Gale even considered a love interest?

9. Sometimes romance just isn’t the way to go. Favorite friendship?

I’m going to redirect you to a post I did last week about Boys/Girls platonic friendships in books, ok? Here it is. Juliette and Kenji from the Shatter Me trilogy are probably my faves though :D.

10. What’s your favorite scene with your bookish OTP?

Chapter 62 of Unravel Me… not saying anything else!

11. Imagine your favorite book couple again. Who’s most excited about Valentine’s Day (either ironically or genuinely)?

Oh, does Valentine’s Day still exist after everything that went on? Ok then. I would say that Warner is probably more excited about it, he likes to surprise and do things for Juliette, so I think that would definitly have something very special prepared for her.

Queen of Shadows (Sarah J. Maas)

queenofshadows

Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she’s at last returned to the empire — for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past . . .

She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die just to see her again. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen’s triumphant return.

Celaena’s epic journey has captured the hearts and imaginations of millions across the globe. This fourth volume will hold readers rapt as Celaena’s story builds to a passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter her world.

I don’t even know how to start this review. Each time I think about reviewing this book, I just look at it and think that maybe I should just read it again, to properly convey to you how awesome I thought this book was. But I have so many other good books to read, I can’t read this one over and over, right?

So, on we go. This will obviously have a lot of SPOILERS, for the four previous books in the series, but for this one as well. So, people, if you haven’t read Queen of Shadows, I love you, but go away! Also, be aware that I’ll probably throw some highly unpopular opinions onto this review – which will probably not even feel like a review anyway. You have been warned.

First off, let me tell you, this book was my favorite read of the year. The buddy read and crazy talks on twitter had a hand on it, but the book itself is fantastic! A LOT of action, a lot of plot twists, a lot of plot in general, some romance, a lot of bromance and awesomeness all around.

I’m gonna first of all address the highest criticism made to this book: “Celaena and Chaol are out of character”. I read this over and over again, everywhere, even from people who enjoyed this book a lot. Maybe I’m from a different planet, because I thought they were very much in character throughout the whole thing.

First of all, if you’re still referring to Aelin as Celaena, you probably will never be happy about this story or any other that follows. She has been Aelin since the moment that she forgave herself and accepted her true power and lineage, with all the burden that comes with it. Celaena is still there inside of Aelin, but Aelin is so much more! Celaena COULD rattle the stars, while Aelin DOES rattle the stars. See the difference?

qos_5

I found it so natural that she wouldn’t trust anyone implicitly, because Celaena didn’t either – or are we forgetting that she only told Chaol the truth about everything because she didn’t have much choice?

Now, about Chaol, this is a guy who is trying to displace the guilt he feels onto someone else… Aelin is an easy target. He’s also not a 100% wrong about what he says. The fact that she holds things from him, makes him doubt her, and the same the other way around, a lot of miscommunication, which by the way had already happened in Crown of Midnight. Chaol actually had a great development throughout this book. He had claimed his side on the end of Heir of Fire, but it was never Aelin’s side, it was always Dorian’s, so why would he side with her when she got back? He suffered a lot and the only thing I think him guilty of was not even trying to understand her side of the question, but guilt ridden as he was, I thought that was natural.

qos_12

Neither of them are perfect, so their reaction to each other, I found it so organic. Sorry if you guys don’t agree, it’s totally fine ;-).

qos_9

Arobynn Hamel… Ok, so he’s totally the worst, right? I wanted him dead. No doubt about it. BUT… I felt his dynamic with Aelin super intriguing and I wanted more. I actually liked him better here than on The Assassin’s Blade, because now she knew what he wanted from her, and I honestly felt that was natural, even though repulsing at the same time. But come on, he was never a father figure to her, and if he had no problem with bedding Lysandra who is the same age as Aelin, why wouldn’t he want the same with her. And I do feel like he truly loved her, in his own twisted and sick way. What he had done to Sam, that was the work of a very jealous man… Truth is, I felt that Arobyn was such a well written villain, and I wanted to see more of him. I liked his death, though I wished that Lysandra had drugged him prior to sleeping with him and slitting his throat, because the risk of him waking up was so big, and I was so afraid for her.

Onto Lysandra… I had a hard time trusting her in The Assassin’s Blade, but I liked her then, I liked that she provoked Celaena. And Sam liked her, so how bad could she actually be, right? So, when she first appeared with Evangeline, I not only liked her, but my heart broke for her. Then she devolved this friendship with Aelin and it was such a majestic thing, how these two girls had each other’s backs, and they needed another girl in their lives so bad. I also likes Lysandra’s interactions with the rest of the gang, especially Aedion, oh, the Ghost Leopard thing was amazing.

qos_11

Before heading to the romance part, I’m going to mention the witches, who had a lot more to do in this book. For most of the time Manon was a bit frustrating, she was also in a very tough spot… I really felt for her, truly, but she spent way too much time in a state of indecision between what she felt was right and what was expected of her, and I was glad when Asterin finally broke her and made her see the truth. I liked Elide, she has potential, though I felt that she had a lot of page time in Queen of Shadows, and that maybe half of it could have been given to someone else.

qos_10

When Manon finally faces off Aelin it was EPIC! And the fact that she could summon Dorian back because the Valg Prince in him recoiled from her – AMZING! Let’s get something straight, I don’t think I’m non board with this crazy ship – Manon and Dorian – but I do think they’ll have an important role in each other’s lives and they will probably be the support they both need in the next book.

qos_8

Speaking of Dorian, oh, my dear Dorian… his chapters hurt. They physically hurt me! I had my heart clenched each time Dorian had a small amount of POV, because yes, they were all very small, but they had so many damn feelings in it, that my heart was breaking all the damn time. And yet, I felt that his chapters were perfect: short and painful. They showed exactly what was going on inside him and boy… it was not pretty. The only thing that bugged me a bit was his inability to fight the Valg inside him… Caltrain did it, although her Valg could have been less powerful, or maybe not… Dorian was also heartbroken when the Valg took over, and he probably wanted to give in a little, because he felt so responsible for Sorcha’s death.

qos_3

But that final battle… WOW!!!! Aelin and Dorian and the King and Chaol… WOW WOW WOW!!!! Aelin and Dorian, Fire and Ice, and all glorious! It was beyond perfect!!!

qos_4

Finally, onto the romance… I know a LOT of people had a problem with the romance in this book. Some didn’t like Aelin with Rowan, some said that their romance came out of nowhere, or that there was way too much focus on the romance, or a lot of other things. I don’t care. I thought it was perfect! To be honest, I’ve been shipping Aelin and Rowan since they met in Heir of Fire, and you might say “but they were only friends, the romance doesn’t make sense” and I say BULLSH*T!!!!

Yes, they were friends in Heir of Fire, but there was always something more there (at least for me). It was the way they understood each other completely, how they fought and pushed each other, the nights spent in the same bed and Aelin’s reiterations that she was attracted to him (cofcof). The way they were willing to die for each other when they hadn’t known each other for that long. They are each other’s best friends and the love they fell for one another was already pretty evident in book 3. About the sexual attraction, yep, I think it was there too, actually, I think it was there from the first time that Rowan bit her. Again, YES – HE BIT HER TO PROVOKE HER AND NOTHING MORE, BUT his reaction after (after the biting and then when he learned about her scars) told me that maybe he wasn’t totally being honest with himself. So, when they’re finally reunited on this book, I was giddy from happiness, and I loved every single torment that they gave each other, the hair washes, the nightgowns and the lack of underwear… they are equals in every single way.

qos_2

And boy, it’s GLORIOUS! And there’s something that Rowan thinks after they kiss for the first time, that made me wonder if had been wondering if not only could he find someone after Lyria, but also if Aelin is that someone… and I’m guessing (by his extremely positive reaction) that the answer is YES on both accounts.

qos_7

Another huge thing that I think people are still clinging to is Sam. Don’t get me wrong, I love Sam just as any other girl, but – don’t kill me please – I think that Sam is overrated! *okok, have you calmed down yet?*

Let me make my case, ok? Sam was amazing, sure, and he was in love with Celaena for a long time, but she was in love with him for a really SHORT one. And they were together for only one month before he died. And let’s not forget, it wasn’t a good month! They loved each other a lot, but they fought a lot too, and Aelin never got to the point of trusting him implicitly. So, while he was SUPER important in her life and for her growth, I don’t think she loved him MOST OF ALL, and I’m not sure that they would have had a future, had he lived… she wouldn’t be the person she is now, that’s for sure, and that would be a shame, because Celaena was great, but Aelin is freaking AWESOME!

qos_6

I LOVED the bromances in Queen of Shadows! There’s Chaol and Dorian, obviously, after the “I love you” in Heir of Fire, and Chaol doing everything he can to save Dorian and all. But Aedion and Rowan!!!! They have my heart, because those 2 freaking fae (half-fae) males are so damn AMAZING! 😀 😀 😀

And Aelin was beyond glorious!!!! The “Firebreathing bitchqueen” is freaking amazing!!!

qos_1

So, to sum it up, I loved this book – if that wasn’t clear so far. I loved the action, the plot, the characters and their development. I loved the amazing females in this book, the males, the men, the witches and the shapeshifter. I LOVED the plot twists, and I can’t wait to see where it will all go. I loved the friendships, and the fights, and the romance. I LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK!!!

Now I apologise for my LONG (2000 words *cofcof*) “review” that is more of a fangirl and opinion dumping. I know most of you won’t agree with some of the things I said, but that’s totally fine ;-). Also, one of the reasons I loved reading this book so much was thanks to Josie, Anjie and Erika, so, thank you girls – even if Anjie will positively hate what I wrote here.

(I’m sorry, this was too cute not to share! Little Rowan – source)

AND NOW I REALIZE THAT I’LL PROBABLY END UP WRITING ANOTHER REVIEW FOR THIS BOOK ONCE I REREAD IT, BECAUSE I FEEL THAT I STILL HAVE A LOT MORE TO SAY ABOUT IT.

Top Ten Tuesday: 10 Characters that I would give Halloween a chance for

top 10 tuesday

Hello, welcome back to another Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is:

Halloween themed freebie — your choice (ie. 10 best ghost stories, 10 things that scare you in books, 10 literary Halloween costumes, 10 vampire novels, 10 books that WILL scare you, 10 non-scary books for Halloween, 10 scariest covers, etc.)

I don’t do Halloween, like, at all. I don’t read scary books, I don’t watch scary movies, I don’t dress up or go out partying. I don’t do any of those things. So this week I decided to name 10 characters that I would totally do the Halloween thing for, or, people who are so cool that I would totally like to dress up as them.

1. Cath (Fangirl)

True, it wouldn’t be exactly hard to dress up as Cath, but it would be a blast. Cath is so relatable, that if I raid my closet I would probably have everything I needed to “be” her. (source)

2. Tessa Gray (The Infernal Devices)

Dressing up as any Shadowhunter would be great, but I have a soft spot for Tessa Gray’s clothes 😉 . (source)

3. Aelin Ashryver Galathynius (Throne of Glass Series)

Celaena’s clothes are all amazing, but I love her tunics and pants, and that dress from Queen of Shadows? With the Dragon? WOW!!! (source)

4. Luna Lovegood (Harry Potter series)

Dressing up as a student from Hogwarts would already be pretty great, but Luna is just special. (source)

5. Feyre (A Court of Thorns and Roses)

Feyre is a bit kickass, I mean, she gets to wear some gorgeous clothes – though not dresses at first – and she has a bow and arrows, so she has a Katniss vibe going on as well… (source)

6. Dahlia Moss (The Unfortunate Decisions of Dahlia Moss)

I read this book recently (and loved it) and Dahlia just wears the most ridiculous things sometimes… I mean, a jigglypuff hat?!

dahlia_

7. Shahrzad (The Wrath and the Dawn)

Shazi just has the most amazing set of clothes (and husband), so I would totally dress like her for one day… though I suspect that I would be thoroughly embarrassed by the amount of skin showing…

8. Elizabeth Bennet (Pride and Prejudice)

Does this need an explanation? (source)

9. Eleanor (Eleanor & Park)

I love Eleanor’s style, she’s so unique, and I love her so much, that I would totally be her for one day (if her family didn’t come attached). (source)

10. Professor McGonagall (Harry Potter series)

I’ve mentioned before that I think McGonagall rocks, and I would totally dress up as her for Halloween 😀 .

I love my Hermione wand…

A Book That Has A Kick- Ass Butt Female Protagonist!

DSC04765

The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas has the amazing Celaena (though I like her new name better… my “Fire-breathing bitch-queen”). Then in The Wrath and The Dawn by Renée Ahdieh there’s the amazing Shazi. And Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is pretty amazing as well.

The Assassin’s Blade (Sarah J. Maas)

Celaena Sardothien owes her reputation to Arobynn Hamel. He gave her a home at the Assassins’ Guild and taught her the skills she needed to survive.

Arobynn’s enemies stretch far and wide – from Adarlan’s rooftops and its filthy dens, to remote islands and hostile deserts. Celaena is duty-bound to hunt them down. But behind her assignments lies a dark truth that will seal her fate – and cut her heart in two forever…

Explore the dark underworld of this kick-ass heroine and find out how the legend begins in the five page-turning prequel novellas to the New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass series.

This book is a bind up of 5 novelas that are set up before Throne of Glass. Actually, about the events that lands Celaena at the salt mines of Endovier… and this reads more like a novel than 5 different novellas.

The Assassin and the Pirate Lord

I thought this novella was a great introduction to the story, to Celaena and Sam, to their bond (or lack thereof) and to what set things in motion…

4/5 Stars

The Assassin and the Healer

This one felt so short, but I really liked Yrene and I wanted to see more of her. Hopeful we will 😀 !

4/5 Stars

The Assassin and the Desert

I really liked the Silent Assassins and I want the Mute Master and Ilias to come back and help Celaena sometime in her life, because they were awesome. I also loved Ansel, despite everything, and my heart broke when she did what she did, though I could sympathize with her… I didn’t like the fact that she killed her lover (than was totally in love with her) with so much ease. I’ll be eagerly awaiting for their return.

And why didn’t Sam meet her in the desert? o_O I wanted him to go to her!

4.5/5 Stars

The Assassin and the Underworld

This was my favorite novella. I loved Sam. I loved jealous Celaena. I loved their badassery. I hated Arobynn Hamel, since he beat the crap out of both of them, and I wanted to kill him! How dare he? Use Celaena’s money to buy Lysandra’s bidding? GRRRR!!! I could have killed him! And then he did what he did…

Sam though… ❤

“I love you,” he repeated shaking her again. “I have for years. And he hurt you and made me watch because he’s always known how I felt, too. And if I asked you to pick, you’d choose Arobynn, and I. Can’t. Take. It.”

Can we talk about the fact that Dorian asked her to dance and to be HIS for a few dances?! 😀 My fangirl heart almost gave away at that. But Sam was there 😉 .

5/5 Stars

The Assassin and the Empire

The only problem I have with this novella is that it has a short time span. Why on Earth did SJM only give 1 month of happiness to Sam and Celaena? Are you kidding me? The boy spent his life loving her and only gets one month of sleeping happily beside her, without even getting lucky or she saying that she loves him? That’s cruel! She even took away the good soap!

Have I mentioned how much I hate Arobynn?

tumblr_inline_mq7vzvAGOZ1qz4rgp

I broke at the end. Not because Sam died – I knew it was coming after all – but because of how she reacted. Her grief was so raw… that it broke my heart. Her trip to Endovier was TORTURE!!!

“I’m Celaena Sardothien and I will not be afraid.”

robin_crying_gif_by_namgis-d5zpvrb

4.5/5 Stars

Overall, I really enjoyed this novellas and how they flowed together. I did wished that it spanned throughout more time. I wanted Celaena and Sam’s connection to be stronger than it was. I wanted to see more of Sam as well, I feel like 3 novellas was not enough.

Now I’m feeling the urge to go through the last 2 books to find any reference I might have missed about any of these people.

Also, I love Celaena. When she says that she will consider leaving some of her shoes, but no way is she going to leave her books… my girl!

Overall Rating: 4.4 Stars

4-2

Heir of Fire (Sarah J. Maas)

Heir-of-Fire-UK

Consumed by guilt and rage, Celaena can’t bring herself to spill blood for the King of Adarlan. She must fight back…

The Immortal Queen will help her destroy the king – for a price. But as Celaena battles with her darkest memories and her heart breaks for a love that could never last, can she fulfil the bargain and head the almighty court of Terrasen? And who will stand with her?

*** WARNING, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS – BECAUSE IT’S QUITE IMPOSSIBLE TO TALK ABOUT THIS THIRD BOOK IN THE SERIES WITHOUT SPOILING SOMETHING FROM THE PREVIOUS TWO BOOKS! ***

First off, this series just keeps getting better and better and I can’t wait to see what Queen of Shadows will bring.

I really loved that this book was about Celaena facing her past and come to grips with who she really is. Because, let’s face it, she’s magnificent! She grew so much in this book and we finally get to see what happened all those years ago, on the night that she woke up between her dead parents. I finally understood what stood in her way, and so did she, and I was so glad that she finally accepted all of her and was kind of happy about it. Although I spent a good portion of this book crying my eyes out…

Now let’s talk a bit about the guys, I’ll start with the “old” ones.

Chaol Westfall, I have to tell you, my irritation with him at the end of Crown of Midnight eased a bit, but this guy had so much trouble choosing a side… please… I mean, MAN you are a grown man, you’re not even a boy like Dorian! I get it, really, I realize that his main concern was not picking a side but keeping everyone safe, but that just didn’t work for me. While I like Chaol a lot, I was screaming internally at him most of the time. I was glad when he FINALLY made up his mind – after a few lovely harsh words from Dorian – and chose the RIGHT side! I’m quite curious to see him reuniting with Celaena now…

hof_9

Dorian Havilliard, I keep loving him more and more each book that goes by. In this book he moved on from Celaena, while still clearly loving her as a friend. He started to learn how to control his power, and even fell in love. But poor guy, for a boy who’s supposed to be quite promiscuous, he manages to date the only 2 girls in his kingdom that only share his bed fully clothed… I hated when Chaol was not telling him the truth, but I loved his reaction when he finally learned it, he didn’t hesitate! He knew right there and then that the right side was Celaena’s and he would do whatever in his power to help her… against HIS OWN FATHER! I mean, this guy has balls!!! His lessons to Chaol?! EPIC! I’m really worried about that ending though, I don’t know how he’ll get away from that, I just hope he’s still himself by the time Celaena manages to get him.

Now on to some new guy, Aedion Ashryver, yes, Aelin’s cousin. Oh my! What a man! I mean… he’s the male version of Celaena, quite literally… HOT! As soon as he got his first POV, I liked him. This guy will move heavens and mountains to get his Queen back safe and sound. No hesitations. I also liked that after all those years, he was still jealous of Dorian.

But my favorite ever has to be Rowan Whitethorn… I LOVE HIM! He always saw Celaena for what she really is… Aelin. He saw the potential, the fear, he didn’t cuddle her, he pushed her so she would push back. And it worked, he helped her build herself up… Oh, he’s just the best!

hof_6

hof_4

– Now, just to make it clear, here’s my standing on the ships. –

1. Aelin and Rowan – Yeah yeah, I know they’re only friends, and I like that friendship a lot, but really, all those nights sleeping in the same bed, seeing each other naked, being carranam, … I don’t know, let’s just say that I wouldn’t mind it at all if their relationship evolved, because I think that out of all the guys in these books, Rowan is the one who understands her better, and who loves her the most just as she is.

2. Aelin and Dorian – Yes, still up high on my list! I always loved them together, but now even more. They both grew up so much, that now I think Celaena would not only understand Dorian’s life, but they could embrace it together (seeing as they’re both heirs to their respective thrones). And he accepts her for who she is – granted, he actually hasn’t seen it yet, but he will… Also, theirs powers are complementary! That has to mean something, right? And Dorian trusts her implicitly and is letting Fleetfoot sleep with him, so there’s that!

3. Aelin and Aedion – Oh, before you kill me, I know they’re cousins, but they both say at least twice that they’re distant enough, that the conversation had actually occurred. And I think there might be something there, at least from Aedion’s side, though I do hope he gets to see her – I’m pretty sure Chaol will be able to get him out somehow.

4. Celaena and Chaol – See how I didn’t use her real name there?! So, I think this ship has sunk! Again, I love Chaol, and I know he’s crazy about the girl, but he still wishes that she was just Celaena, who she’ll never be again, and I don’t think he would be able to manage her real self and all that that entails. Also, I think Celaena is done, she finally took off her ring 🙂 .

I also enjoyed Manon Blackbeak and the witches. Actually, when her POV started, I wasn’t really into it, but then I just found myself rooting for her and Abraxos, and somehow (weirdly) I ship her with Asterin…

I’m so excited for book 4! I want to know how Aedion will be able to get out of his cell, how Chaol will stay hidden from the King and how he’ll fight, how that damn necklace is coming off of Dorian’s throat, how long will Rowan stay away from Adarlan, how Aelin will be able to trick everyone, … I want to know!!!

Also, I missed Elena, Gavin and Mort on this book, I was kind of hoping that Gavin would appear to Dorian and help him control his magic somehow, or at least that Mort would speak to him, like Celaena thought that he might… oh well…

Crown of Midnight (Sarah J. Maas)

>>>  Nº 22 on My 2015 Reading Challenge – A book that scares you #2 <<<

Throne-of-Glass-image-throne-of-glass-36562538-481-750

Celaena Sardothien, royal assassin, is the King of Adarlan’s deadliest weapon. She must win her freedom through his enemies’ blood – but she cannot bear to kill for the crown. And every death Celaena fakes, every lie she tells, put those she loves at risk.

Torn between her two protectors – a captain and a prince – and battling a dark force far greater than the king, Celaena must decide what she will fight for: her liberty, her heart or the fate of a kingdom…

*** Warning, there will be SPOILERS – because it’s quite impossible to talk about this second book in the series without spoiling something! ***

Holy smokes, this book is good! I put this one within the same category as Throne of Glass – a book that scares you – because the second half of this book had me scared to death, not because I was afraid that Celaena would die, but because I was afraid that she had lost herself.

This one definitely has more twists and turns than the first one, and crap, I did not see them coming!

(sorry, but this quote is just super fantastic!)

First, about the guys, I love Dorian to death, he will always be my number one choice. With that said, I was glad that Celaena and Chaol got together in this book, the feelings were there from the start and they had to be addressed sometime or another. I even think that maybe she’ll never love anyone as much as she loves him, that doesn’t mean I want them together.

It really bothered me though that she couldn’t quite handle Dorian in the beginning of the book, they had just broken up and she was being cold, distant and mean to him… I mean, I know why, the girl is 18 years old, I don’t think she actually knew how to deal with it anyother way. But I was glad about Dorian’s reactions, he was always the bigger man, he knew that Chaol liked Celaena and vice-versa, and took a step back and allowed them to be…

Now, Celaena and Chaol, like I said, I like that it happened. They were cute and for a moment there I was almost rooting for them! I mean… Chaol certainly started to say more than he thought he should and he was cute and embarrassed and swoon…

CoM_2

And that dance…

CoM_5

And his birthday… wow, Chaol certainly had a GREAT birthday!!!

CoM_6

I honestly loved their little romance, and I say little because it lasted way too little time. Seriously, with that kind of emotional “break-up”, Sarah could have least given the guy one whole month of happy sexcapades in his office or the broom closet, right?

But then the world came tumbling down and it broke my heart… Nehemia! To be honest, I wasn’t 100% sold on the Princess, she was a bit shady to me, but I enjoyed her girly times with Celaena and understood her importance to her, and then THAT happened, and it broke everything! And suddenly she was facing Dorian, and attacking Chaol, and scratching him and wanting to kill him (thank God for Dorian’s magic!), and torturing people, and sharing wicked grins with the King, and I got really scared, suddenly I was afraid that she wouldn’t be able to came back from that…

CoM_7

Speaking about Dorian, he has MAGIC!!! Wow. I love it, and I love the why, why he’s able to retain something that everybody else lost. This book opens up the door for a whole lot of other stuff and I’m loving it. And all that action beneath the library!!! 😀

Archer Finn!!!

I did not saw that coming!!!! And it didn’t quite shocked me the way he ended up…

I loved that Dorian and Celaena became friends again, and that she realized that she had him. But even though I love LOVE Dorian, I do understand why Chaol did not tell her about the threat or the interrogation to Nehemia, I also see why her trust was broken, but she could have at least tried to see his side of the matter (especially after what Nehemia tells her through the portal).

This book was the perfect setup for Heir of Fire (which I’m currently reading), it has much more intrigue and mystery than Throne of Glass, and much much more magic!

I’ll tell you, for a moment there I could almost see myself shipping Celaena and Chaol (because god damn it, they’re so cute). But then when he finds out what and WHO she is, I didn’t like his reaction. I hated that he kept his distance, that he made the decision to send her away without talking to her first (even if it was for her best), and I hate that when he found out her real identity, his first thought was of the threat that she was to his kingdom and King, even though he now knew what the Kind’s been doing.

By the way, in the first book review I said that I might name my “firstborn” Celaena, but now I’m thinking that Aelin sounds much more majestic! Aelin and Aedion would be great names for twins ;-). I’m loving Sarah J. Maas’s names :D! (small remark, as I do not plan to have kids anytime in the foreseeable future, and I just got my Kindle, I decided to name it Aelin! Yes people, my Kindle has a name.)

Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Characters Who Are Fellow Book Nerds

And it’s Tuesday again! The Top Ten Tuesday theme this week is “Ten Characters Who Are Fellow Book Nerds“, which surprisingly was harder than I thought to come up with 10. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. So, without further ado…

Top Ten Tuesday

1. Cath – Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Cath is the ultimate book nerd, she not only loves to read, but she loves to live inside their world. And Cath reading to Levi is the cutest thing ever.

2. Celaena – Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

The girl loves a good book, even more than she loves killing (I hope)!

“I can survive well enough on my own — if given the proper reading material.”

3. Dorian – Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

The second bookworm in this series is Prince Dorian. Come on, the Prince has a library in his room and it is said several times that he was born more of a reader than a fighter. And it’s so cute that he has books at the ready to send Celaena when she asks for books.

4 & 5. Tessa and Will – The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare

These two are such bookworms. She spends all her time surrounded by books and he knows the books by heart.

“One must always be careful of books, and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us.”

6. Hermione Granger – Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

This one is mandatory. I bet not one single person is going to leave Hermione out of this list, am I right? Come on, at 11 the girl read the school manuals before even setting foot at the school.

7. Dante – Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

Dante loves to read and shares his love for books with Aristotle. It’s also very cute.

8. Luke – The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

Luke has a bookstore, which is kind of cool. Also, he’s one of my favorite characters from the Shadowhunters chronicles :).

9. Elizabeth Bennet – Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

True that Jane Austen tell us that for a woman to be accomplished she has to read and to all these other stuff, but Lizzie really did enjoy reading.

10. Catherine Morland – Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

Other of Austen’s heroines that loved to spend a good deal of time with her nose in a book, especially if they were sordid and scandalous…
