Book Traveling Thursdays: A Book That Got Me Into Reading

btt

Hello, welcome back to another Book Traveling 168709Thursdays, which a weekly meme created by Cátia @The Girl Who Read Too Much and Danielle @Danielle’s Book Blog. The goal is to share the covers of a book related to that week’s theme, which you can see at the Goodreads group, indicating the original cover, the one of your country, your favorite and least favorite.

This week’s theme is “We all have to start out of somewhere. Choose a book that got you into reading“. The book that got me to reading was truly Twilight (yep yep), but I then stopped for a bit after that series and Harry Potter, and it was only when I read The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones that I haven’t stopped again.

Original COver:

I don’t love the original covers, but I’ve grown pretty used to them by now, and I don’t find them as bad.

COVER FROM MY COUNTRY (PORTUGAL) & COVER FROM THE COUNTRY I LIVE IN (SPAIN):

I still don’t quite understand why they switched the original covers for book 1 and 2 in Spain and Portugal, but it happened.  I like the new spanish cover better, even if they used the original cover for the second book again.

Favorite COVER(s):

It shouldn’t come as a surprise by now, that I LOVE the new UK covers for this series. I love them so much, that I bought the whole series with these new covers… yep… I also like the new US ones, especially those spines.

LEAST FAVORITE COVER(s):

I can’t even with these covers! The Polish, Czech, and Bulgarian ones look like covers for a graphic novel… and the Czech is just too bad to even be out there in the world. Then the Ukrainian is just too weird, and the German one looks like a Narnia book or something.

The Book Courtship Tag

courtshiptag

Hello, and welcome back to another book tag. This time I’m doing The Book Courtship Tag, that has been around for a while. I was tagged by Travelling in My Bookcase, thank you so much. People, go check out her blog! The Book Courtship Tag which was originally created by LovelyLikeLaura.

Phase 1 – Initial Attraction: A book that you bought because of the cover?

I bought Love in the Time of Global Warming (Francesca Lia Block) 95% because of its gorgeous cover. Go on, have a look at it. Isn’t it just amazing? Unfortunately I had a few problem with the book itself, but the cover is just gorgeous.

Phase 2 – First Impressions: A book that you got because of the summary?

I bought The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion totally because of the summary!

Meet Don Tillman. Don is getting married. He just doesn’t know who to yet. But he has designed a very detailed questionnaire to help him find the perfect woman. One thing he already knows, though, is that it’s not Rosie. Absolutely, completely, definitely not.

Phase 3 – Sweet Talk: A book with great writing?

Renee Ahdieh is a genius, and The Wrath and the Dawn has the most amazing writing.

If you haven’t read it yet, first of, how is it possible? And then, go and pick it up now!

Phase 4 – First Date: A first book of a series which made you want to pick up the rest of the series?

Here I have to go with The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. When I read it I wasn’t as heavily into reading as I am right now, but City of Bones made me go out and get the next 2 books, and then the 3 others, and then The Infernal Devices… you get it, right?

Phase 5 – Late Night Phone Calls: A book that kept you up all night?

I’ve been kept late a few times lately, but the last one was More Than Once by Elizabeth Briggs.

Lately I’ve been staying late to read on Fridays… and when I say late is “it’s almost morning” kind of late.

Phase 6 – Always on my mind: A book you could not stop thinking about?

OMG, Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi. BIGGEST BOOK HANGOVER EVER!!! Lol. I read this book in one night – so it could totally have fitted on the previous slot – and afterwards I could not stop thinking about it. I wanted more. I needed more Warner and Juliette. I would go back to open the book and read random chapters. I had a problem. I don’t have it now because the book is physically very far away from me.

Phase 7 – Getting Physical: A book which you love the way it feels?

I love running my hands through all my books… I might have a problem… 😛 Now, I’ll choose a very recent one: Cress by Marissa Meyer. I just love my book, and the embossing on the lettering. The Square Fish editions are just so gorgeous and I’m so glad that I decided to get these ones – even if now I have to wait one year for a physical copy of Winter.

Phase 8 – Meeting the parents: A book which you would recommend to your family and friends?

I would like everyone to read Modern Romance: An Investigation by Aziz Ansari and Eric Klinenberg. I chose a non-fiction one on purpose, because I’m sure most of my family wouldn’t want to read fantasy… And this book is just amazing and it blew my mind. I think everyone should read it… and I mean: EVERYONE!

Phase 9 – Thinking about the future: A book or series you know you will re read many times in the future?

Hmmm, so many… but… Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell… actually, I’m thinking that I might pick it up this month if I can get through all of my TBR on time 🙂 . Reading this one on Christmas time would be the most perfect thing.

Phase 10 – Share the love: Who do you tag?

I will tag… EVERYONE!!! This tag has been around for a long time, so you probably have done it already, but if you haven’t, and you want to, consider yourself tagged, yeah?!

Shadowhunters: New Stills

EW has just released 3 new stills from episodes 2 and 3 from the new Shadowhunters series. Check it out!

“In the above photo, taken in the second episode, Clary (Katherine McNamara) and Jace (Dominic Sherwood) are seen heading into the City of Bones — the sacred burial place of all Shadowhunters.”

“In the third episode, Jace, Clary, Alec (Matthew Daddario), and Isabelle (Emeraude Toubia) mean business on a rescue mission.” – I’m guessing that they’re going to get Simon?!

“Lastly, here’s Clary and Jace crashing a warlock party — as you do.”

The Mortal Instruments: UK covers

You are probably aware of this, but Walker books has changed the cover of The Mortal Instruments series. They have new covers in the US, which are gorgeous, but as soon as I saw the UK ones I knew I just have to have them. Just look at them!!!

They were released earlier this month, but Amazon.es had them at 10 to 12 euros per book, which is way too expensive when you’re thinking of buying the 6 of them together. But yesterday, I entered my account to see one other book, and noticed that The Mortal Instruments were at a lower price, 7€ each one! I didn’t even think twice, I ordered them right there and then. Now I’m patiently awaiting their arrival early next week 😀 !!!

Shadowhunters: cast picture

Yesterday, after Kat’s Q&A on twitter, she released a photo of the main cast (minus Simon), in costume, probably in Magnus loft for his party. Check it out.

So what do you think? I read a lot of people complaining about Clary’s outfit, remember please, the dress belongs to Izzy, is supposed to be short and revealing. About Isabelle’s dress, I can totally see her using that, she uses some weird stuff throughout the books. About Magnus not being sparkly enough, we’re not having a proper look at him.

I think they all look great, Dom (Jace) is especially hot, as well as Matthew (Alec), as usual too.

Shadowhunters: David Castro is Rafael Santiago

One huge complaint about The City of Bones movie was the absence of fan favorite, and all together highly important character, the vampire Rafael Santiago. Shadowhunters was not about to make the same mistake, and announced today that actor David Castro is going to play the beloved (snarky) Rafael.

Let’s agree that the casting is very much on point, yes?!

Rafael is not a favorite of mine, though I like him well enough, especially when he’s interacting with Magnus. But I can’t deny that he’s EXTREMELY important for the advancement of the story, not to mention that he’s directed related to the fact that someone’s heart might stop beating… 😀

“The Mortal Instruments” will be back

Yesterday the internet exploded, for all of us, The Mortal instruments fans, finally got some news we had been waiting for so long: IT WILL COME BACK… but not as we thought. The Hollywood Reporter announced this yesterday:

tmi

“Constantin Film, the production company that controls the rights to Cassandra Clare‘s best-selling YA fantasy franchise and which produced The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones film, is relaunching Mortal Instruments as a high-end drama series.

Constantin has hired Ed Decter, whose writer-producer credits include Helix, Unforgettable, In Plain Sight and The Client List, as the showrunner for the Mortal Instruments series. The project is currently in development, with Constantin planning to begin production next year. No broadcast partners are yet attached to the series.

Constantin had originally planned to turn Clare’s fantasy series into a feature film franchise but shelved that idea after the first Mortal Instruments film, starring Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower, tanked at the box office, earning just $31 million domestically. Constantin, however, insisted it had not abandoned the franchise and planned to return to Mortal Instruments.

“It actually makes sense to do (the novels) as a TV series,” Constantin film and TV head Martin Moszkowicz told THR. “There was so much from the book that we had to leave out of the Mortal Instruments film. In the series we’ll be able to go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth.”

The Mortal Instruments series is part of a broader strategic shift at Constantin that will see the German-based company move into English-language television series. Moszkowicz said Constantin is looking at possible television adaptations of several of its English-language movie properties, including period serial killer drama Perfume: The Story of a Murderer and the Resident Evil sci-fi horror franchise.

Constantin’s German television business has been consistently profitable over the years even as its recent English-language films, with the exception of the Resident Evil titles, have misfired. In addition to Mortal Instruments, Constantin’s big-budget disaster movie Pompeii and the 3D animated Tarzan, both fizzled at the box office.”

Well, I agree that it makes a lot more sense as a tv show. The series takes place in a limited time window, although, the amount of events is huge, and that was clearly not well done on the big screen. And I’m really excited about the possibility of it becoming a TV show. I’ve been “living” in the world of Shadowhunters for several months now (if you don’t count the 2 weeks I was somewhere between “The Maze” and “the Glade”), and it’s a “never-ending” story, in the sense that between the original series and The Infernal Devices we have already 9 books, and that Cassandra Clare is not only planning a sequel to The Infernal Devices, but to The Mortal Instruments as well! So, TV is not only a great chance for them to do it right, but to also expand on all the magnificent things the has put on paper!

The big concern right now is, of course, how they will come about doing it. Will they start from the beginning (ignoring the movie altogether), or are they starting in City of Ashes?! I have to be honest, I would love a total remake, because they screwed it up so badly, changing things that should not have been changed…

003

The other main concern for most fans is the casting. We now had a couple of years to grow to love all those involved in this movie, a second movie would mean that they would all be back, but a TV show means that most of them most likely wont! Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower are highly unlikely to be linked to the TV show, no matter how much they love the characters, I just think it isn’t feasible given the success they enjoy right now. As much as I love Jamie in the movie, he’s not “my Jace”, so I guess I would be OK with it. Same goes for Clary, Lily Collins clearly made the character her own, but she not how I envisioned her. Now comes the tricky part: having any other person other than Robert Sheehan playing Simon would be plainly wrong. Isabelle is a role I fell needed a recast if we had had a second movie… Jemima West may be great, she’s just not a great Izzy.

Now Magnus and Alec… I guess in a sense we were lucky that nothing went on between them in the first book/movie… Godfrey Gao is “my Magnus”, I can’t read a passage with him in it without seeing his face, so I’m hoping, really hoping, that given that Magnus is a continuous character throughout the whole Shadowhunter business, that they’ll be able to keep him… I kinda grew to love Kevin Zegers‘s Alec, maybe because now I absolutely love Alec in the books, but I guess I would mind if he was recasted. Though all the fanart with Godfrey and Kevin’s faces would be out of date…

TMI-Magnus-001Whatever they decide, I’m just happy we’ll be able to see some kind of adaptation to screen of this amazing universe (and I’m desperately hoping that somehow The Infernal Devices will make it to the big screen…).

Alec in CoB, CoA and CoG

I just found this on Tumblr and I had to share it! I found it on malec-is-my-drug . I couldn’t have found a most adequate description to the evolution of Alec Lightwood in the first 3 books… Alec in City of Bones and City of Ashes is all like “no, I don’t have a boyfriend… I don’t fell anything!” and then in City of Grass he’s all like “F**k this s**t, I’m gonna kiss my boyfriend in front of everybody and I don’t care about anyone’s opinions!”.
