The Day of the Doctor

WOW! That’s basically it… WOW!

dotd_1

It seemed an impossible task, to make a story that would appeal to all whovians, classic and recent era fans, and that made sense, had depth and packed an emotional punch like you wouldn’t believe… well, Moffat did it!

The story starts with Eleven and Clara (with a lot of Easter Eggs along the way… I would need a post just for them). We don’t get to see how he pulled her out of his timeline, but it’s obvious that he did… so moving on. They are “called” to assist UNIT, where they face an impossibility, a painting with the name of “No More” and “Gallifrey falls”, that is a moment in time captured by Time Lord technology… it’s bigger on the inside!

So, we get a glimpse of that day, and we meet John Hurt’s Doctor, that steals a weapon of mass destruction and flees, going to an abandon place to detonate it. But the interface has a conscience, and it assumes a form from his past, or it his future, she always gets those two mixed up… it’s Rose Tyler, although, in that form, she’s called Bad Wolf. She offers him the possibility of seeing his future self, to know what we’ll become if he destroys Gallifrey and the Daleks on that day.

From here we go to the Tenth Doctor that is courting Queen Elizabeth I, thinking that she’s a zygon! After proposing to her and finding out that the zygon was actually the horse, he realizes that he’ll be king! After a quick chase, and now with 2 Elizabeth’s, Eleven makes his way into his time and now the fun begins.

The War Doctor soon joins them and with a lot a sass from all of them, they find out a way of dealing with the Zygon problem, in the past and in the present, but not before Ten marries Elizabeth I.

Doctor Who – 50th Anniversary Special - The Day of the Doctor

With the Zygons dealt with, it’s time the War Doctor makes a choice, and he chooses to do it, to “push the button”. After Clara realizes that his incarnation hasn’t done it yet, the Doctors go to him, and the 3 of them prepare to do it, for he doesn’t have to do it alone this time… but, Eleven changes his mind, and they all know what to do!

“Bad Wolf girl, I could kiss you!” “That’s gonna happen…”

So, they decide to save Gallifrey, to “upload” it into a stasis cube, where they will be in a pocket universe, in a moment in time, but alive and with hope. To do this, they require all 1200 years of calculations, so we see all of them… all 13 of them…

Not knowing if it worked, the War Doctor goes his way (beautiful scene with all 3 TARDIS) and starts to regenerate once inside is TARDIS, because he was wearing a bit thin… he does hope the ears are a little bit less conspicuous… (no luck!).

Ten, realizing that he won’t remember this, asks Eleven where they’re headed, which he tells him: their tomb. Ten says that things could be changed and that he’s better change them because “I don’t want to go!” (heart broken all over again), to which the Eleventh Doctor says to Clara “He always says that”.

Clara leaves the Doctor alone with his painting and soon after he meets the Curator (a.k.a. Tom Baker, the 4th Doctor), who tells him the correct title of the piece “Gallifrey falls no more”… which means that it worked!

Now the Doctor has a destination, he wants to find it, he knows where he’s going!

I loved how it was a nod to the past, without forgetting to look ahead to the future. Many people complained that the classic Doctors should all have been in the special, and to a certain extent, they were, old footage was used to show them manipulating their respective TARDISES and the scene in the end (although clearly a montage) it’s a tribute to all of them. It would have looked weird to have them all in it, specially when most of them don’t look nothing like they did in the 70’s and 80’s.

Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt, what a treat! The bickering and ironic comments was amazing. Their chemistry was unbelievable, especially Matt and David, and I truly felt that they belonged there, together.

Billie Piper!!! Steven Moffat did an amazing job with that. He’s right, bringing her as Rose Tyler would be a mistake, because that story is finished and so well told. Bringing her back as The Moment was a truly genius idea, and Billie was better than ever.

Fandoms and Knitting: Doctor Who Scarf Completed!

After around 3 weeks of starting it – Fandoms and Knitting: here I go! – and a lot of soared fingers later, the Fourth Doctor Scarf is done and in time for the big Celebration.

Even though I made it smaller than the pattern, it still turned out pretty big – my father is right: I will have to be careful for it to not get stuck on the subway doors…

Now all that’s left is to finish my beanie (to go with the scarf because it’s freaking cold in London) and to pack my bag! =D

Since I diminished it considerably, the scarf now has the already impressive number of 140 cm (20 more centimeters and it’s about my height!). Now, only another 1 and a half meters to go, in a little more than a week…

I’m just sorry that the pictures don’t do any justice to the colours!

Fandoms and Knitting: here I go!

Realizing that I’m only 30 days away from The Day of the Doctor, 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, and 24 days from heading to London, I’ve decided to get a move on on my knitting project Fandoms and Knitting, and start to actually do them, in the faint hope that I’ll have finished at least one of them until then – hard thing to do, because the fourth Doctor scarf and the Gryffindor house scarf are two long and boring scarves to knit!

scarves_13

The first thing to do was buy the yarn, which proved kind of difficult… at least on the Doctor Who front. Web pages such as Doctor Who Scarf  or Witty Little Knitter offer suggestions to the colours to use, the trouble was finding them. I finally settled in a compromise between the real colours, the ones I actually found and the ones I liked best. So the purple is too purple, the grey is actually kind of blue, the green is softer and the red is too dark… but hey, it’s my version of it ;-).

For the Gryffindor house scarf, the yarn was fairly easier to find…

WP_000758

After looking online for patterns for both scarves, I then went on to the equally difficult challenge of needles. The 4th DW scarf can be knitted in basically anything, but they are two versions of the HP scarves, one of which is a circular pattern, that has to be knitted in circular needles (and if you don’t know, I tell you, it’s recommendable that the cable has roughly the same size as the work you’re gonna do, otherwise, you have to keep stretching the cable and in consequence, the yarn). The common cable sizes are 80 cm and 100 cm… well, I needed something a lot smaller, because I don’t want a 50 cm wide scarf! It took me 3 days and combing through almost every yarn shop in the city to actually find the perfect thing: the Knit Pro interchangeable circular needles!

WP_000755

I might have gone a little overboard with the amount of needles and cables I got, but each had a reason, so… =).

Now all that was left was actually start knitting, which I did. I started with the DW scarf, because if I can only have one ready by the time I go, it has to be this one, it’s 50 year, right?!

WP_000766

So here I go! I decided on the original season 12 pattern, but I made same changes: I reduced the width a bit, by casting only 40 stitches, I went for a bigger needle number, because I like my scarves fluffy and not too rigid and I’ll be reducing the number of ridges in each of colour bars, in order for it to be a little shorter than it’s supposed to.

In my yarn quests I found my perfect Ravenclaw blue, and I probably I’ll be doing to movie version, given that the book version is a lighter and stronger blue.

Fandoms and Knitting: 3 goals!

I love knitting! It’s a thing I learned by myself, watching some videos on youtube and searching for patterns online. I have to admit, I’m not really good at it, the only things I’m able to do are scarves, and most of those I’ve started, I never finished them… but hey, it’s better than nothing, right?

scarves_13

Luckily enough, 2 of my favourite fandoms are British, which means, cold weather and a lot of scarves. I’m setting 2 (or 3) goals here – I want to knit the following scarves until the end of winter (ideally I would say until November, because I would love to take them with me to London, but I’m being realistic…):

Doctor Who – The Fourth Doctor Scarf

I’m just in love with it, pure and simple, and a really want one! I will make it slightly shorter… I don’t think a scarf of 6 to 7 meters it’s adequate for everyday life…

By the way, that awesome picture of Tom Barker falling with his amazing scarf is from the new The Day of the Doctor trailer, that BBC released yesterday!

Harry Potter – Gryffindor House Scarf:

Because, come on, it’s beautiful and it’s Hermione’s scarf (and Ron’s and Harry’s and Ginny’s, …).

Harry Potter – Ravenclaw House Scarf:

Not really sure yet if movie or book edition, which in case you don’t know, is blue and bronze.

The thing is, Pottermore‘s sorting hat put me in Ravenclaw and I kind of liked it. And Luna is pretty cool…

cho_chang(couldn’t find a photo of Luna wearing the scarf… she’s to cool for that 😉 )
