The Harry Potter 30 Days Challenge #30

Welcome back for the 30th day of The Harry Potter 30 Days Challenge! As you know by now, Leannaatc @Short Story Long had this idea of a month full of Harry Potter and you can find the prompt for each day here here. This is it people, it’s the END!

– Day 30: What affect has Harry Potter made on your life? How much does it mean to you? –

I can say that Harry Potter means a lot to me. It came into my life at a critical point in it: the year of writing my Master thesis. Sure, I had heard of Harry Potter before (who hadn’t), I’d watched most of the movies that were out by then, but I had no interest in reading them – reading was not a thing I did a lot back then.

But then I fell in love with reading because of Twilight (yes, you read that right!), and one day I decided that I wanted to read all the Harry Potter’s as well. So I went into FNAC and bought all 7 books, the first one in portuguese (they didn’t have it english for some reason) and all the other 6 in English (my lovelies pocket signature edition). I didn’t really start reading right away, I wanted the Sorcerer’s Stone in English so bad!!! Luckily I found it on the same week and started to journey through all the books.

Then a funny thing happened, talking about the books allowed me to reconnect with an old friend, and we ended up reading the last 4 books “together” – by together I mean: each at our own houses, exchanging text messages about the book – no whatsapp then either. It was a blast, and we managed, albeit for a short time, avoid a lot of things that were and always will be, wrong with our friendship, and we enjoyed each other’s company for a while and it was good.

So for me, Harry Potter will always mean a time of my life that I was a bit lost and I found an old friend again. By the way, I’ll always love this friend of mine, she’ll always have a special place in my heart, but it’s just the kind of friendship that is so toxic, that staying away is for the best.

After that, Harry Potter meant being part of the fandom in some small way, and that is an amazing feeling!

I ended up giving my portuguese Harry Potter e a Pedra Filosofal to my nephew, in the hopes that he would start reading – because me and him like to share nerdy things, it’s “our thing” – but the kid is not that much into books… he likes his phone and likes to make videos, and he’s actually quite good at it and I’m kind of hoping that he’ll want to pursuit it when time comes.

Last Christmas I made another attempt to influence another nephew… this time my oldest niece, who was 11 at the time – perfect age, right? So I bought her the 2 first books in the new 15 year anniversary edition – they’re so gorgeous! This kid told me “yes, I’ll read it in the summer!” – I’m sure she hasn’t, but hey, I tried! I even bought them all wands when I went to The Harry Potter Studio Tour (and those things are bloody expensive!).

(I kind of wanted to buy all this collection for myself because I’m in love with the covers, but my mom started making fun of me on the shop… “aren’t those books for kids? You’re 30!”)

And this is it! The end of the The Harry Potter 30 Days Challenge! Wow, it has been a crazy month, now I want to curl up and watch all the movies, re-read all the books (it won’t happen anytime soon) and relax. 🙂

– Day 22: Would you rather read only Harry Potter for the rest of your life or never know it existed? –

Wow, talk about a doubled edge sword! I actually thought a bit about this and my answer is: never know it existed.

I love Harry Potter, obviously, but it wasn’t the series that got me into reading, or that made me love fantasy, so I would rather have access to every other book out there, then to just read Harry Potter for the rest of my life. Does it make sense?

And honestly, if I never knew it existed, I wouldn’t know what I was missing out on, so it would all be fine…

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Authors I’ve Read The Most Books From

This week’s theme is: Top Ten Authors I’ve Read The Most Books From. Interesting!!! Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. I always read throughout my life, but never as much as now, so I haven’t read a lot of books from the same authors…

Top Ten Tuesday

Let the countdown begin!

1. Ana Maria Magalhães and Isabel Alçada (at least 13 books)

Who are these people, you ask? Well, every country has it’s own children’s books, right? In Portugal we have a series called Uma Aventura (An Adventure), written by these lovely ladies, that started out in 1982 and is still going strong, it now has 52 books! Yep, they’re very prolific! I stopped reading these a while back, and as these books are stuffed in a box somewhere in my storage room back home, I have no idea exactly how many of them I read, but I can remember reading at least 13, which makes them number one on this list!

And probably many more…

2. J. K. Rowling (11 books)

Queen Jo Rowling gets a second place on the list (and this is without her books that I still have to read…). She gets this spot due to her 7 Harry Potter books, 3 companion books and Very Good Lives.

3. Cassandra Clare (10 books)

This one was obvious, and she’s not on top because I’m still to read the codex and the Shadowhunters Academy novellas, but as soon as her new book drops, she’ll probably be on top.

4. Dan Brown (5 books)

Dan Brown has 5 books on this list, the only one of his that I’ve not read yet is Inferno. The first four covers are in portuguese, because I read those books in my mother language. It was a crazy time when The Da Vinci Code came out, I read his previous 3 books soon after, and when The Lost Symbol came out, I was not willing to wait for the portuguese edition… it contributed a lot to me just reading in english nowadays.

5. Rainbow Rowell (4 books)

I’ve said that Rainbow Rowell is my spirit animal, I’ve only read 4 books from her, because that’s all there is 😦 !!!

6. Sarah J. Maas (4 books)

Sarah J. Maas is a very recent love, and she will climb this list a few places in just a few weeks, as soon as I read The Assassin’s Blade and Queen of Shadows!

sarahjmaas

7. Stephenie Meyer (4 books)

The whole Twilight saga is four books. I actually read most of The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide, but I don’t think I finished it, so I’m not counting it…

8. Suzanne Collins (3 books)

The Hunger Games trilogy.

9. Jenny Han (2 books)

I’ve only read two books by Jenny Han, though I want to give The Summer I turned Pretty a chance…

jennyhan

10. Jane Austen (2 books)

I still have a few left to read… I intend to read at least one more of her books until the end of this year!

11. George R.R. Martin (2 books)

I’ve only read the first two books from A Song of Ice and Fire, though I want to finish the series! I started book 3 a while back, but wasn’t feeling it, so I dropped it, I might want to think about picking it up again.

It is likely that I might have miss someone in here, given than I don’t always recall books that I’ve read a while ago (and I’m not home to look at my shelf). I know I’ve read at least 2 Kathy Reich’s books, but I don’t even recall their names, so…

See you next week!

The Harry Potter Tag

Today is July 31st! Which means it is the anniversary of The Boy Who LivedHarry Potter – as well as its amazing author, J.K. Rowling. So, it seemed fitting to do this tag today. Summer @XingSings tagged me for this (thank you so much Summer) and I thought “Hell YES!”. I also saw this tag on INTO THE BOOKCASE, and it had a couple more questions than Summer’s tag, so I decided to add them. Here we go!

hp_2

1. Favorite book?

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban a close second). It’s a funny book, the romances between all of the main characters bring a lightness to some parts of the book, and because ultimately it’s not a books for kids anymore, it has a whole lot of heartbreak (yes Dumbledore and Snape, I’m looking at you two!).

2. Favorite movie?

Oh, it will have to be Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince again, I mean, seriously, this movie is so damn funny at times, and Rupert Grint has this amazing expression when he’s “in love”… it always makes me laugh.

3. Least favorite book?

I agree with Summer here, it will have to be Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (though the book is much better than the movie).

4. What is your least favorite film?

Again, same as the book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

5. Parts of the books/movies that make you cry?

Wow… how to pick? To be honest from book 6 onwards it was a tear fest. But Sirius going through the veil (HP5), Harry realizing that he never saw his father stag on the lake (HP3), Dumbledore dying (HP6), Snape dying (HP7), Tonks and Remus fighting because she loves him (HP6), Tonks and Remus dying (HP7), Mad Eye Moody dying (HP7), Neville at St Mungo’s hospital (HP5), Fred… (now I’m almost crying, I need to stop…).

6. If you could hook up with any character, who would it be?

Ron Weasley… (in the last couple of books… just to be clear!)

7. Favorite character?

Do you want a list?! I always loved Ron, he was always so brave and loyal (it might also be because I have a slight crush on Rupert Grint). Then I was always fascinated by Tonks and Lupin. And Hermione, obviously. Oh, and Luna, she’s just the best!

8. Who is your least favorite character?

Percy Weasley, he was so damn annoying and then he was just dumb and stupid.

9. What is your least favorite line?

There are seven books, and I read them (the last time) a couple of years ago, I don’t remember this…

10. What would your Patronus be?

I have no freaking idea… probably a raven or something like that.

11. If you could have the Resurrection Stone, the Invisibility Cloak, or the Elder Wand, which one would you choose?

Not even a contest: The Invisibility Cloak!

12. What House would you be in?

This one I know (because Pottermore already sorted me and I think it is quite right): I’m a proud Ravenclaw!

13. If you could meet any member of the cast, who would it be?

Evanna Lynch, she just seems so nice. Emma Watson because she’s fabulous. Rupert Grint (see the part above when I mentioned I have a crush on him…). I wouldn’t mind meeting Matthew Lewis though…

14. If you were on the Quidditch team, what position would you play?

Beater, no way I would be able to be a seeker, and I wouldn’t want to be a chaser or a keeper because I could get beaten by a bludger (who wants that?!).

15. Were you happy with the ending?

I was and I don’t get why so many people had a problem with it. But hey, I read Harry Potter for the first time when I was 25/26, so my reactions are not representative of the target population.

16. How much does Harry Potter mean to you?

A lot. Unlike many people it didn’t got me into reading (no, Twilight did that, actually, I read Harry Potter because I was on a Twilight high, go figure). But it made me love reading even more. It created a whole world inside my head, it made me even more tolerant and open. It also gave me the feeling of a fandom for the first time, and that is awesome.

I tag ANYONE who wants to do this – seriously Harry Potter fans, get moving! 😀

Once again, a very happy birthday to the amazing J.K. Rowling, who created this amazing universe, and to her most favorite creation, Harry Potter himself. ❤ ❤ ❤
