HIMYM Alternate Finale will be released

Four days after the horrid finale of the amazing series How I Met Your Mother, which ended with Barney and Robin’s divorce, the Mother’s death and Ted and Robin together, Carter Bays (one of the series creator) used Twitter to announce a piece of “good” news to all the fans who didn’t enjoy the mess they made:

Deadline reports that although no additional shots were made and the script is the same, just edited differently, this alternate ending might be considered a “happy one”. I, for one, am not convinced! No matter how they edit the end, the storyline was still crap. There’s no way they can edit it in a form that doesn’t regress all the characters and that doesn’t make me think that Ted was a douche! This just seems like a way to get people to buy the DVDs (given that I’m sure the sales will drop after what happened!).

HIMYM: And that kids, is how you mess up a 9 years show!

So, last night was the How I Met Your Mother 1h finale. Never in my life I was so glad that I don’t get to watch these shows live, but have time to read the spoilers first (yes, I like spoilers!). Why? Because the only way I can deal with the disappointment I feel at this exact moments, when I just finished watching The Last Forever, is that I had a whole 14 hours to come to grip with the outcome of the episode.

HIMYM, one of my favorite shows ever, one of the few I watched right away, it was just that good! And now? All I can think right now is that I will never be able to watch it again (getting to a point where I could actually watch the finale was hard enough!), I will never be able to pick a random episode and watch it with joy, because I know how the creators ended up butchering these beloved characters…

So this is what the finale brought us:

– Robin and Barney are unhappy because of all her travelling, and she gives him an out of the marriage at the 3 years mark. He takes it. They get divorced. So, the Robin that put Don in front of her job once, isn’t able to put her love life in first place… again… we are back in 2006! After this, she strays away from the gang and misses a lot of important moments in their lives – she’s a crappy friend to Lily and where’s the person who couldn’t stand her job in Japan because she was away from them?

– Why did we just spend 1 whole season in a wedding that lasted a less than 10 minutes?

– Barney goes to his old ways, even making the Playbook II and manages a perfect month, 31st gets pregnant, he gets a daughter = he changes his ways! So, the Barney that has been evolving since season 3 and that is able to love and not cheat and actually be happy is no more… again… we are back to 2008 with Barney, who, by the way, was the character with the most development in the series…

– Lily and Marshall get baby number 3! So Lily, who was so overwhelmed a couple of seasons ago with one kid, now has 3, there is no mention of her job or any career… so, are we to assume that she’s a stay at home mom, which she never wanted to?

– Marshall eventually becomes a judge and runs for the supreme court (which we know he gets), but, why on Earth did he had to endure a job in corporate that he didn’t like for so long?

– Ted eventually marries Tracy – what took them so long? – and she eventually dies (of very unknown reasons!). He finishes telling the story and the kids tell him how the story was all about how he has the hots for Aunt Robin and how he should go and get her… so he grabs the Blue French Horn and goes to her place, where she is miserable with her dogs… waiting for him, essentially… and we are back at the Pilot!

So, I don’t really mind that the mother dies, I liked her, but life isn’t fair and stuff happens, it’s not that implausible. I do mind that Carter Bays and Craig Thomas ignored completely the character development that happened for the last 9 years and stuck to the finale they imagined in the first season. If this episode had aired at the end of season 2, heck, even at the end of season 3, it wouldn’t be that bad… it would kind of be OK that Ted and Robin got together, and that a child changed Barney and that Lily never got her dream job but got 3 kids…

But it has been 9 years, the characters changed, they grew! It has been 7 years of Ted chasing Robin and being clear that they do not work! 5 years of a chemistry between Barney and Robin and such a growth for both of them as people, that I really thought couldn’t be ignored! A whole couple of seasons dedicated to the importance of Lily’s professional accomplishments, to have them thrown out of the window. And 9 years of us rooting for the Mother, the proverbial ONE, meeting her, falling for her, because she was just right for him, and have that all crushed when we see that even after 25 years he’s still pining for Robin!

So this is how you destroy almost a decade of television and the show should actually be called: “How I got my kids permission to bang Aunt Robin”!

Here is a good post about this episode on Tumblr:

This finale is an insult—not only because it makes no sense narratively, or because it betrays fans who have followed it so closely and lovingly for so long, but because it disrespects its own characters, because it denies them the ending they have worked for, and the ending that they deserve. This finale is an outrage.

I honestly feel sad, disappointed, betrayed… Here’s a lesson kids: don’t get emotional attached to something that someone else creates, because they can crush you with a blink of an eye!

Kudos to Mrs Alyson Hannigan for giving me the only couple of teary moments of this episode, because lady, when you cry, I cry with you! And to Mr Neil Patrick Harris who totally rocked on the Ellie scene!

HIMYM “The End of the Aisle”

Around this time next week, we will all have said goodbye to the wonderful series How I Met Your Mother… yep, just 60 minutes to go 😦 !!!

This week, however, we finally walked down the aisle with Robin and Barney. In The End of the Aisle, both of them suffer a bit of a meltdown, but Robin’s is considerably larger than Barney’s.

While the groom is worried he won’t write the perfect vows for the love of his life, Robin is actually considering that she’s making a mistake and wondering if she should actually be marrying Ted instead! Ted tells her no, that he doesn’t lover her like that anymore, and neither does she, because she loves Barney and love doesn’t have to make sense and stuff. But she’s having none of that: he won’t run away with her, she’ll just run away on her own! Robin plans to leave the wedding but runs into the Mother, after they get to second base, the Mother tells her that she doesn’t know her well enough to talk her out of this crazy decision, but she thinks that 3 beep breaths might help her make the right call… on the second one though, Barney is there! Barney tells her that he’ll only make one vow to her, because it’s the only one that matters: he won’t lie to her again, because he loves her!

Love is totally nonsensical, but we have to keep doing it. Or else we’re lost and-and love is dead. And humanity should just pack it in. Because love is the best thing we do.

Meanwhile, Marshall and Lily exchange their second set of vows, and Marshall tells his wife that he plans on keeping renewing them, because just once isn’t enough to encompass a whole lifetime with her, because he’ll love her more and more as time goes by…

At the church, Barney has one last tiny meltdown about the colour of his tie and Marshall (doing a great job as a best man), slaps the hell out of the groom and ending the slapbet’ slaps!

So the episode ends with Robin walking down the aisle at the sound of Sandcastles in the Sand, and both of them exchanging vows and getting hitched!

Oh… and there was actually a Ring Bear!

Note: I loved that Barney did not actually freak out about marrying Robin… but I hated that Robin freak out had to do with TED!! Como on people, it took the guy 9 years to realize that it wouldn’t happen, and then she wants to run away with him?! Come on! I thought we were all over the Barney + lies things… she has accepted it before, why make a fuss of it again?

HIMYM “Gary Blauman”

Only 90 minutes to go! Episode 21 of the 9th season, Gary Blauman, kind of blew my mind!

Gary Blauman

The premise was simple, and could in fact not have worked, but it did. Gary Blauman (SNL‘s Taran Killam, aka Cobie Smulders’ real-life husband), a colleague of Marshall and Barney from GNB times, shows up at the wedding and Robin has never received his confirmation card, which means that the guy does not have a seat! So, the bride declares a “Code Red!” and Marshall decides he will take care of business.

So the gang reminisces about why they love or hate Blauman and whether or not he should stay… Ted hates the guy because he believes he tried to steal a girl from him; Lily loves him because he only let her get half of a butterfly tattoo when she and Marshall were broken up; William Zabka loves him because he recognized from his poetry; James hates him because he was the guy he cheated on Tom with (yeah Ted, he wasn’t after the girl after all!); and Barney hates him because he stole his accidental curly fry… So Barney tells him to go packing, but Marshall show them all that people are important and that he should be present for the big day.

Right them, future Ted tells his kids… That’s how it goes, kids. The friends, neighbours, drinking buddies, and partners in crime you love so much when you’re young… As the years go by, you just lose thouch. That being said, I did manage to keep track of a few people.

“You’ll be shocked kids when you discover how easy it is in life to part ways with people forever. That’s why when you find someone you want to keep around… you do something about it.”

This story is told by Ted, not only to his kids, but also to the Mother, while on their first date. Ted was nervous, she thought she wasn’t ready to begin to date just yet. given that she had broken up with her boyfriend just 4 days before, but he walks her home, tells her the story and she kisses him!

Just a few notes…

  • I actually liked that Ted and the Mother’s first date was nothing much and that it did not go according to plan. It’s cute to see Ted, after 9 years, still look like a young boy in search of true love.
  • What a shame that Robin only has one scene in this episode! Although the one scene she has is amazing: that’s her husband people! “Dammit Patrice, I’m not finished!
  • Great to see Jeanette (Abby Elliott), Kevin (Kal Penn), Zoey (Jennifer Morrison); Scooter (David Burtka), Stripper Lily, The Blitz (Jorge Garcia), Sandy Rivers (Alexis Denisof) and Blah Blah a.k.a. Carol (Abigail Spencer) back!
  • How they manage to keep that array of guest stars a secret is beyond me, also, how amazing was that sequence scene?!
  • In this episode we had Cobie’s husband, Alyson’s husband and Neil’s fiancé, all in one episode!

HIMYM (not that) funny facts

I never bought on to the theory that Ted is telling his kids this story because the Mother is dying, but after rewatching the 20th episode of the 8th season, The Time Travelers, I started to think that maybe Ted is the one who’s dying!

After watching this episode again, I realized that when Ted thinks of what he would do if he could go back in time, he would not only meet the Mother before time, but he would also visit his friends, because he cherishes every single moment with them…

I do hope that no death takes part in the series finale in a couple of weeks, but if it does, this would be my bet… =/

HIMYM funny facts

In the mid-season finale of season 8, Barney proposed to Robin, using a long term play called “The Robin” in what was definitely one of the most awesome proposals on TV ever!

The Final Page, Part One And TwoThe_Robin

Step 1: Admit to yourself that you still have feelings for this girl.

Step 2: Choose the completely wrong moment to make a drunken move after hanging out at a strip club… and get shot down on purpose.

Step 3: Agree that you two don’t work, locking the door on any future you could have together, which will drive Robin nuts.

Step 4: Robin goes nuts.

Step 5: Find the person who annoys Robin most in the world and ask for her help. Explain everything to Patrice and hope she agrees to help.

Step 6: Check with your doctor about possible broken ribs.

Step 7: Pretend to be dating Patrice.

Step 8:Wait until Robin inevitably breaks into your place to find The Playbook and show it to Patrice, which you’ll monitor via the hidden cameras you have in your apartment.

Step 9: After Patrice “finds” The Playbook, have your first “big fight.”

Step 10: Prove your loyalty to Patrice by burning The Playbook, and actually burn it. You don’t need it anymore.

Step 11: Because your friends have no boundaries, they’ll inevitably have an intervention for Robin, which you’ll monitor via the hidden cameras you have in Marshall and Lily’s apartment.

Step 12: Tell only Ted about your plan to propose to Patrice.

Step 13: Wait and see if Ted tells Robin. And if he does, it means your best bro in the world has let go of Robin and has given you his blessing.

Step 14: Robin arrives at her favorite spot in the city and finds the secret final page of The Playbook… the last play you’ll ever run.

Step 15: Robin realizes she’s standing underneath mistletoe.

Step 16: Hope she says yes.

HIMYM funny facts

To further prove that How I Met Your Mother creators always had Robin and Barney as the endgame in mind, in the beginning of season 6, Barney proves how perfect he is for Robin.

In Subway Wars (S06E04), Barney knowing how Robin needs a win, makes Ted trip so that Robin can win the race!

In Baby Talk (S06E06), Barney assures Robin that the fact the she never needed him, only makes her more awesome (against what Ted believes…).

HIMYM “Daisy”

It’s coming to an end… we’re almost there… last night’s episode of How I Met Your Mother was called Daisy and, in case you’re wondering, no, it’s not the mother’s name. It is however the name of Lily and Marshall’s new baby girl… yes people, she’s pregnant.

It makes sense, right, there’s no way that such a perfect couple as those two are would only have one kid! So Marshall, happy beyond his wildest dreams, decides that his wife’s happiness comes first and the family eventually moves to Rome: Lily, Marshall, Marvin, baby Daisy, Lily’s dad and Marshall’s mom (who are still an item).

The episode was great. Robin’s mom is hilarious, she spent all episode recounting episodes about Robin’s father, that sounded a lot like Barney, but the she asked “Do you have someone you can depend on?” and Robin said “… I do“, and I don’t get the theory that she might have been talking about Ted, because it’s clear that she meant Barney, because he truly has always been there for her!

Ranjit and Billy Zabka! The Captain and his singing Maids! And Boats Boats Boats! And “Thank you Linus!“!!!!

HIMYM funny facts

Kudos to the HIMYM team, that on season 4 had to deal with not one, but two cast member’s pregnancies.

Alyson and Cobie informed the crew about their pregnancies only a few weeks apart and this meant that for most of season 4, the 2 leading ladies had to hide their growing bellies in all sort of manners. This included baggy clothes, huge bags and shots from all kinds of angles that would distract the viewers.

Cobie was able to appears in all episodes and even do full body shots, and while we can still see that she’s bigger than usual, it was done well enough. Alyson however, even had to disappear for a couple of episodes in order to have her baby, and the clothes she wore during the season didn’t do much to hide the fact that she was pregnant.

Still, they manage to produce 24 episodes while their 2 leading ladies were expecting… I can only imagine that that was not an easy thing to do.
