Release Blitz: Licks (Kelly Siskind)

Licks, an all new standalone Second Chance Romantic Comedy by Kelly Siskind is NOW AVAILABLE!

36 hours is a short spell when racing the clock.
2,160 minutes is an eternity for old friends to fall in love…

August Cruz is the only man I’ve ever loved.
He’s the one who got away.
He’s the one I totally screwed over.

Now he’s standing on my doorstep, nine years later, but he’s not the only thing that turns up. My mother’s lost diary is in my hands, and it might lead me to my father. A possibility I wished for one year ago, at my last birthday.

I have 36 hours to fulfill that wish.
I have 36 hours to drag August on a wild scavenger hunt.
I have 36 hours to protect my heart before I lose him again…because there’s something he’s not telling me.

Review

Another amazing story by Kelly Siskind! This book felt so different from the previous books on this series. I was curious how this would turn out, given the blurb and what I already knew of Gwen, but this was perfect.

Gwen and August’s story is a second chance romance, and what a story it is. I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone, but let’s just say that these 2 had been best friends forever, and then something bad happens, and they are torned apart. They reunite for 36 hours, and their journey is amazing. I really liked how the story had a bit of everything, we could see the depths of their feelings, their growth, their conflicts, and everything wrapped in the story of Gwen trying to find her father. It was one hell of a ride.

I really loved the characters. So far, from the 3 girls, Gwen was the most mysterious to me, but I think that after reading this book, she became my favorite. She’s such a strong person. And August, I loved his determination, how he fought for what he wanted.

They were perfect for each other, and I enjoyed every second of their crazy ride. It was definitly an amazing addiction to this series, and it’s for sure my favorite book of the 3. Definitely give it a read.

Review:

A down-to-earth carpenter. A Prada loving personal shopper.

A Habitat for Humanity project that erects more than walls…

The word “nail” has so many meanings:

Ainsley Hall’s manicured nails belong in the Museum of Modern Art.

The fashionista hammers nails at Habitat for Humanity.

She desperately wants to nail Owen Phillips.

Unfortunately, she mistakenly thinks he’s gay.

Owen’s never-ending divorce has taken a turn from messy to downright vindictive. Yearning for the simpler things in life, like working with his hands, he joins a Habitat build. Turns out he also wants to work over Ainsley Hall…but the confusing bombshell flirts blatantly with other men.

When Ainsley discovers Owen’s true sexuality, their mutual attraction ignites, but he hasn’t shared the extent of his divorce drama. If he can’t disprove his ex’s false allegations, it will take more than hammers and nails (and nailing studs) to keep their walls from caving in.

I love Kelly Siskind’s books, and this one was not an exception. After Legs, I wanted to read more about Rachel’s friends, and I’m so happy we finally got a book about Ainsley and Owen.

If you  haven’t read any of Kelly’s books, I don’t know what you’re doing, because her writing is amazing, super funny, with a lot of emotion thrown into it. I have to say that I ended up liking Stud more than I liked Legs, because I felt like the story and plot were better. I loved LOVED LOVED the story. And the characters… Owen is AMAZING, and he kind of reminds me of Sam (from Chasing Crazy) for some reason. Whatever, I loved him, how he loved so fiercely… And Ainsley is a hoot! Even though she was so scared of getting hurt, she was funny and she let herself feel, and I loved her.

The fact that their relationship started as friendship was a big plus for me, and the chemistry between these 2 characters was off the charts.

What kept me from loving this book anymore than I did, was the fact that it felt a little slow for the first half of it. There was nothing wrong with the pacing, it just felt slow to me, which kept me from enjoying it more.

Either way, another amazing book from Kelly Siskind, and I seriously recommend you to read this book, and all her other books. Because she’s the bomb!

Read an Excerpt:

Her gaze dipped down my body, slow and languid, soaking me in. Something in me twitched to life, like a phantom limb reminding me hot blood once pumped through my veins. All my veins. My groin got heavy, heat flushing my thighs. Because she looked at me.I let that notion marinate and did my best to keep my brain on target. “If you plan on volunteering, show up at the construction site at 8:30 a.m. sharp. Nick will take you through the paces.”

“Will you be here?”

“Possibly.”

“Are you here every day?”

“Some.”

“Do you often answer questions with one word?”

“Depends.”

She tipped her head, those stunning eyes intent upon me. Suddenly, heading home for beers and pizza didn’t sound as appealing. I dug my boots deeper into the earth.

She swiped her tongue across her full bottom lip. “All right, tough guy. I’ll be here next week, volunteer ready, where you may or may not be, depending on if you do or do not decide to show up.”

Every word dripped with flirtatiousness, but I stayed quiet. The way I’d all but grunted at her so far, probably better to keep my mouth shut.

So we stood there—her waiting on me to speak, a skateboarder barreling down the road at our left. Me unsure why she was affecting me.

I missed being with a woman. Missed the slide of soft skin and wet mouths, and locking my girl in my arms for the night. But I’d sworn I’d do it right this time. Not rush in. Make sure I dated someone with depth and interests outside of making bank. Everything about this spitfire girl read narcissistic.

When our silence slipped into awkward, she fluttered her fingers in my face. “It’s been…interesting.”

I offered her a curt nod.

Chuckling to herself, she spun around, but her right heel wedged into the loose dirt. Those damn shoes were lethal. She sank an inch and teetered, but seemed to catch herself. Then her massive purse fell. The thick strap landed on her forearm, tipping the balance. She shot out her hand, struggling to stay upright.

I lunged for her, clasping her trim waist to hold her steady. And close. Too close. Not near enough for her to feel how I was thickening behind my zipper, but the air swelled. It dilated with feminine scents. Something sweet. Nice.
She smelled like chocolate.

My hands spanned her waist from behind, her curves above and below all woman. Hour glass, like a modern-day Marilyn Monroe. Jean Harlow. Mae West. Over the years, I’d watched every classic movie there was, wishing I could slip to a time when men danced and women sang and loyalty and love were valued over getting ahead. An old soul, my nana always said. Or a romantic. Or just plain trouble.

Now I had my hands on a dangerous beauty.

Once again, I really enjoyed Kelly Siskind’s writing. When I realized she was about to release a new book, I got super excited, and once again I was not disappointed. Though I will admit that this book felt a bit more serious than her previous ones, and I missed a bit of the humour that was such a big part of Kelly’s previous work.

I really liked the 2 main characters. They were both a little lost for their own reasons and in their own ways, but they were such strong people. I loved how the relationship and the bond between them made them stronger and more determined. How they found themselves not because of each other, but because they had the support and the love.

Their relationship was great, with awesome communication (most of the time) and great chemistry too. And obviously, great hot and steamy moments. I really loved that Jimmy was always all in… I have a soft spot when the guys are all for a relationship.

The fall out was a bit predictable, but still packed a punch. I just wanted them to overcome all the stuff and be happy again.

I have to say that Rachel and her group of friends reminded me a bit of Kelly Siskind’s previous trilogy, Over the Top, which had a similar trio of girlfriends… I don’t know why, but their interactions just reminded me of it.

Overall, another great book from one of my favorite authors. Can’t wait to see what else this series will bring.

Excerpt:

Rachel settled onto the stool beside me, her spine ramrod straight. She tucked her elbows to her sides. Not exactly relaxed.
A drink could help. “What’s your poison?”
“Apparently dangerous men I don’t know, but I’ll have a glass of the Lynmar Pinot.”
I could do dangerous. “If I’m your poison after two minutes, imagine how you’ll feel in a few hours.” That earned me a long swallow from her. “She’ll have the Foursight,” I added to Cameron. It was sweet how confident she was ordering that wine, but her lips would taste so much better after a sip from my glass.
She shot me a look, her freckles sharp against her reddening cheeks. “Pretty sure I can order for myself, and I’d like the Lynmar.”
“You don’t want the Lynmar. 2011 was a brutal year. Trust me.” No need to bore her about the early rains that season and the lack of fruit.
“Actually I do want the Lynmar.”
Cameron moved to grab the bottle, but I held up my hand. He halted.
To her, I said, “I’ve been sipping the Foursight since I got here. You telling me you don’t want a taste?”
Her attention dropped to my lips again, and she grazed her teeth over hers. Fire sparked in her brown eyes. “I may want a taste of that wine. Later. For now I want the Lynmar.”
“It’s inferior.”
“It’s splendid.”
“The season was crap.”
“The season was hard, not crap.”
“The Foursight is a sure thing,” I said. She must have seen the heat in my gaze.
“I like the underdog,” she countered, a sultry note to her voice. “Finding a diamond in the rough. The vines that survived 2011 were stronger, and a few vintages shone. Like the Lynmar. Hints of spice. Creamy mouthfeel.” A quiet hum passed her lips.
Okay. The girl knew her wine, and my attraction to her spiked. With the haunts I’d been frequenting, and my bartending gig at Rudy’s Tavern, I hadn’t been around a woman like her in ages. No visible ink, her outfit more conservative than racy. Her straight brown hair would look sexy as hell tangled in my fist. “You sure you don’t want to skip to the mouthfeel part?”
She smiled freely, the first hint of her letting loose. “I’m still not sure how bitter the aftertaste will be.”
My answering grin was just as carefree. “I know how to make it sweet, Sunshine.”
She barely reacted, but her nostrils flared. “Then get me a glass of the Lynmar.”
“You’ll regret it.”
“I’m already regretting walking in here.”
I chuckled, unsure the last time flirting had been this much fun. “How about a bet?”
“I don’t bet with strangers.”
“But you have drinks with them?”
She paused. “What sort of bet?”
Between her rejection at Vesper and her stiff posture now, sitting beside me was probably pushing her beyond her limits. Limits I wanted to test. The women I’d messed around with weren’t tough to reel in. We were always after the same thing: a fun night between the sheets. The girl at my side was tipsy, but not so drunk she didn’t know what she was after. Something told me if I could unlace her, it would be lightyears beyond fun.
“You do a blind tasting of the Foursight and the Lynmar,” I said. “If you can’t tell them apart, then I buy you a glass of my choosing, and I get to taste it on your lips. At my place.”
“That escalated fast.” So did her breathing.
“Did you want this to go slow?”
Instead of turning me down, she said, “If I win…if I guess each wine, what do I get?”
“You tell me.”
“A winery?”
I barked out a laugh, but there was nothing funny about her joke. Two years ago, I’d have been able to ante up. “Might be out of my budget. Anything else?”
She looked at me through lowered lashes. “My place.”
Now we were getting somewhere.

Excerpt:

The last person I wanted to see walked into the restaurant, and I tensed. Her frantic gaze was forced to me, and the only three vacant seats. She searched the room in vain, the rounding of her spine a clue she wasn’t thrilled about her options. She looked out the way she came, squeezed her eyes, then squared her shoulders and marched toward me.

Part of me—the lower half—wanted to pin her to the wall with my thighs while I hitched that proper little skirt higher. The other part hoped she’d wandered into the wrong place. Not because our night together had been bad, or the fact that she’d disappeared without a trace. No. The thing that had the tendons in my neck bunching was remembering how good it all was. Too good and too much fun, and I’d imagined rounds two and three and four ad nauseam. But rounds always ended in a knockout punch.

This girl was nothing but trouble.

She paused at the table, drew in a long breath, mumbled something as she exhaled, then glared at the seat beside me and the ones across. She chose beside, probably to face the room.

The only reason we’d hooked up two weeks ago was because there were no names and no strings. She’d admitted how hard it would be for her to relax, how awkward she’d feel afterward. The relaxing part I took care of with one brush of my lips. The awkward was still alive and kicking.

What went down between us couldn’t happen again. Distractions over the next two months weren’t an option, and repeat affairs led to feelings, and feelings led to promises, and promises were nothing but lies dressed up to seduce. Not an outcome I was keen to revisit. Still, I couldn’t ignore her anxiety, as long as she wasn’t here because of me.

I leaned toward her. “You’re the last person I expected to see.”

She squished her lithe body farther from mine. “Kind of coincidental, don’t you think? Did you follow me?”

“I got here before you. If anyone is stalking, it’s you tailing me.”

Indignation colored her cheeks. “I didn’t follow you. I saw a flyer and thought the contest looked interesting, but you obviously read it, too. If I’d known you’d be here”—aggravation laced her hushed tone—“I’d never have shown up.”

Her harsh words had me fisting my hands, or maybe it was how tempting the line of her neck looked, that column of tanned skin shifting as she swallowed. But she was right: having a diversion wouldn’t help my plan. “Then we’re on the same page.”

“Excuse me?”

“Since we’re both here for the contest, we can pretend that night never happened.”

Her face fell, but a beat later, she said, “Good,” nothing but ice in her voice.

I followed with “Great.”

She spat, “Fine.”

So much for stamping out the awkward.

Reality bites.  Hard.

The last time Raven did “real” was sixteen months ago, when she spent one unforgettable night with the tattooed, impossible sexy Nico, and then he disappeared the next day.  Since then, she’s kept her guard up and her feelings to herself.  She doesn’t have time for relationship drama when she’s busy searching for her long lost sister.

Nico hasn’t stopped thinking about Raven — her sultry curves, inked skin, or the fact that he ditched her after their night together.  Now that they’re living in the same city, he knows this is his chance to make things right.  What better way to prove to Raven he’s for real than helping her find her sister?  But when the lines between right and wrong start to blur, putting his job on the line, Nico has to decide if the risk is worth the ultimate reward.

EXCERPT:

His large hand presses against my knee under the table. “Can we talk?”

Jesus, his touch. It’s the first time I’ve felt the weight of his palm on me since Aspen. It’s heavy. Huge. Callused. Instinctually I shift forward, my body no longer mine to command. He doesn’t move his hand. Just his thumb. It presses harder, dragging downward. I grip my armrests to keep from sliding to the floor. He stares at me, waiting for my answer.

Yes. No. Maybe. I choose silence.

The way our lives are entrenched with our friends, I’ll have to spend time with him, and I can’t keep pretending I can block him out. Moving here was about starting fresh, which means letting go of this grudge. But talking about Aspen could stir up more feelings, the same way the experience spurred my need to find Rose. If we talk about our time in the hot tub, it could unhinge me further.

Our waiter arrives to take our order, and Nico’s thumb moves again, a tiny brush, his skin against mine, sending a pulse between my thighs. My sanity plummets. I shout, “Chicken,” like a lunatic as I push away from the table.

Nico’s hand slides from my knee, but his eyes don’t waver. I feel his gaze on my back as I hurry to the bathroom. The second I get inside, I close the door and lean against it, thankful it’s not a public room with several stalls. I take a few deep breaths.

How can that bit of contact turn me inside out? The smallest touch?

Memories of his other touches flip through my mind, snippets of skin and ink, flashes of ecstasy.

My back arching.

His fingers exploring.

The curve of his inked shoulder.

His huge hands.

The sheer size of him.

We might not have had sex, and the details may be fuzzy, but there’s no doubt it was the hottest night I’ve ever had. What isn’t fuzzy is the time I spent with him in the hot tub prior, and how he took advantage of my vulnerability.

Goddamn Nico. And Goddamn Aspen.

Since then, she’s kept her guard up and her feelings to herself. She doesn’t have time for relationship drama when she’s busy searching for her long lost sister.

Nico hasn’t stopped thinking about Raven — her sultry curves, inked skin, and the fact that he ditched her after their night together. Now that they’re living in the same city, he knows this is his chance to make things right. What better way to prove to Raven he’s for real than helping her find her sister? But when the lines between right and wrong start to blur, putting his job on the line, Nico has to decide if the risk is worth the ultimate reward.

I’m so happy I got to change to read and review an ARC for Hooked on Trouble. I’ve been in love with Kelly Siskind’s writing since reading Chasing Crazy almost a year ago, and I was lucky enough to review the previous two books of this series, My Perfect Mistake and A Fine Mess.

I’m a big fan of Kelly’s writing, as you must have gathered by now, so no news there. I think the book has a perfect mix of humour and seriousness, though I have to say that I found this to be the least funny book of the series, but it made sense, because both Nico and Raven were pretty intense for most of the book.

I loved both characters, of course I did, but I have to say that they were the ones I connected less in this series. I think my first problem with Raven was the grudge she hold against Nico for so long… I understood her reasons, but… not really?! She knew why he left Aspen back then and the issues with his family, and she just waited for him to call her? That makes me kind of mad… But I did love her passion and her style and her sharped tongue. I also had a slight problem with Nico, although I understood why he was so strict, I found it a bit too much, but I loved his softness and how much he took care of the people he loved. Nico was all soft where Raven was all sharp, and I think they complemented each other quite nicely and had several things in common too.

I really liked the story and the heavy inclusion of family and its importance. I liked to see Nico struggling with everything he thought he had to shoulder, and Raven trying to reconnect with her sister. But it kind of bothered me that they didn’t communicate about some pretty important stuff… And I wish that some things had been tied up better.

I absolutely loved the ending though, seeing everything wrapped up for all the three couples warmed my heart, and I could have done with more bonding moments between the whole gang.

This was a solid conclusion to the Over the Top series – nice going with the series title, btw – and I urge you all to read these books if you love a good romance, lots of great characters and amazing friendships.
