Winter (Marissa Meyer): 10 Reasons Why It Rocked

winter_

Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.

Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend—the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.

Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters?

Hi guys! I read Winter in the beginning of January – I know… a long time ago… I read more than 25 books in the meantime… but back to business – in a buddy read with Becca @Shih Tzu Book Reviews. A few days ago we published our discussion of the book, which you can read mine here, and Becca’s here.

I’ve previously reviewed the other 3 books in the series: Cinder, Scarlet and Cress, so I thought I would do something different this time around – because we already know how awesome this book is, right? So I give you 10 reasons why this book rocked :D.

1. SO.MUCH.ACTION

2. A lot of twists

3. Ships. Ships all around

4. Perfect Iko

5. Fairytale like scenes

6. Cresswell (because saying ships isn’t enough)

7. Love conquering all

8. Sassy sassy Kai

9. Very smart Cinder (heart swelling with pride here)

10. The Ending! Perfect!

Scarlet (Marissa Meyer)

Cinder is back and trying to break out of prison—even though she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive if she does—in this second installment from Marissa Meyer.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother, or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana.

Scarlet picks up just where Cinder left, and OMG, what an epic book!!!

Be warned people, I’ll keep things as vague as possible in terms of plot, but there inevitably be SPOILERS, for this book and obviously for Cinder.

As was the case of the previous book, the writing is espetacular. The plot on this one, though, is a lot more intricate, as it follows not only Cinder and Thorne in their escape from prison, but it also follows Scarlet and Wolf in their attempt to save her grandmother, and then both pairs collide and they share a goal and it’s amazing. There were a few twists that had me on the edge of my seat, and my heart might have broke at some point… *damn you Wolf*… but it’s all good now…

I loved Cinder a lot more in this book, even though there’s a lot less focus on her. She’s just so much stronger now, and she’s using her gift and her tools, and being sarcastic, and I love her. Also, I don’t know why, I hadn’t realized that she’s only 16! Somehow, in my mind, she was closer to 18, I know it’s not that different, but it kind of is.

Kai, oh my baby Kai… I’m so sorry for him. He’s experiencing all these different emotions, and he doesn’t know how to handle things, and it’s gut wrenching and at times adorable. I want him and Cinder together NOW! Can we take a moment to appreciate the fact that he was immediately jealous of Thorne because he was with Cinder?!

Now, onto the new characters. I had a little trouble connecting with Scarlet, I’ll admit, although I don’t really understand why. She’s fierce and strong, and she’s more than willing to fight for what she wants, but I just didn’t entirely clicked with her. I liked her a lot more once she was with Wolf though… I like Wolf, even after everything that he did, I like him. And I like him and Scarlet together. He’s just like a scared kitten sometimes, and that is adorable.

But people, we now have Captain Thorne, and OMG, where has he been all my life?!

Thorne is so funny and such a good person. He doesn’t judge, he’s open to anything, he’s loyal and he smiles while doing it. His relationship with Cinder is so cute, because she trashes and treats him so bad at times, and he just smiles and lets everything slip. He lets her have control of his ship!

And best yet, he totally ships Kai and Cinder together, so bonus points for him!

This book was just awesome and I can’t wait to start Cress (I’ve actually haven’t started it yet, because I wanted to write this review first). I love Cinder and Thorne’s relationship, and I’m super curious to what will happen next. OOOHHHHH, and IKO, OMG, Iko is just so great. When she’s flirting with Thorne? ADORABLE!!!
