top 10 tuesday

Hello, welcome back to another Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is:

Top Ten ALL TIME Favorite Books Of X Genre (I know, I know. Picking all time faves. I’m MEAN. But I like knowing people’s definitive faves). Can also break it down into sub-genre if that helps?

I decided to go the obvious way and do some of my favorite contemporaries, either YA, NA or adult. Here we go!

Top Ten Tuesday: 10 Books Set Outside the US

top 10 tuesday

Hello, welcome back to another Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is:

Ten Books Set Outside The US (I don’t know about you but sooo much of what I read is set in the US and I love finding new recs of stuff set outside of it!)

YA is probably the worst to find books outside the US (or UK), so I added a few NA books to the mix.

Top Ten Tuesday: Underrated Books I Loved

top 10 tuesday

Hello, welcome back to another Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is:

Top Ten Books We Enjoyed That Have Under 2000 Ratings On Goodreads (we’ve done underrated books a bunch of times in the past 6 years but thanks to Lenore at Celebrity Readers for suggesting this topic as a new way to talk about underrated books especially when underrated is subjective. An easy way to find this — go to Goodreads, your read list, at the top of your read list where it says settings you can add a column for # of ratings, then you can sort by that. If you aren’t a Goodreads user you can look up books you think are underrated and see what their # of reviews is on Goodreads? Or if that’s too hard you can spin it some other way!

This is a super easy topic for me, because I mainly read underrated books. Reading a lot of ARCs from Netgalley leads to this, and I actually love to discover all these new books and recommending the hell out of them.

Excerpt:

Sawyer steps close and waits for me to make eye contact. Slowly, I lift my gaze to his gold-flecked brown eyes, but I can’t find my voice. It’s like I don’t know how to talk to him anymore.

He grins. “Hi.”

From my angle it’s easy to see the scar running down his neck, the remnant of a fall he took through a coffee table while wrestling with his brother. I’ve always wanted to touch it, feel the puckered skin under my fingers. I drop my gaze, but it doesn’t help. The cuffs of his gray button-down are rolled to his elbows, roped muscle exposed below. Something else I’d like to touch.

I blink hard. “Hi,” I say to my feet.

“Look at me, Lil.” I rock on my heels, then do as asked. He raises an eyebrow. “How fucking weird is this?”

My giggle surprises me, and I loosen my grip on my wineglass. “Totally weird.”

Thank God for Sawyer’s candid nature.

He sips his drink, probably Scotch, and a sheen of liquid clings to his bottom lip.

Touch that arm. Kiss that scar. Taste those lips. None of these urges are new, but they’re heightened. Magnified. He watches me watching him, his gaze as probing as mine. What is he thinking?

Then the music changes.

A remix of Madonna’s “Holiday” plays, and Sawyer does Sawyer. He tips his head to the right, his shoulders following, then he pushes out his hip and rolls his torso through. The guy does body waves, alternating from side to side, like he’s in an eighties music video.

People stop. People look. People laugh.

I snort, an unattractive sound I make when my laughter takes over. Sawyer says it sounds like a hyena with sleep apnea. When I snort a second time, he dances harder, and I crack up. My belly aches as he gets into it, the entire room watching now.

I suck in a breath, place my empty glass on the table behind me, then clasp his shoulders. “What are you doing?”

He stops dancing. “Making things less weird.”

“Less? What about you channeling Paula Abdul is less weird?”

“Did you laugh?”

I grin.

Then he says, “I’m sorry.”

The music vibrates in my chest, or maybe it’s his proximity. “Sorry about what?”

“Last week, when you called, I was a dick. You caught me by surprise, and I didn’t handle it well. So, I’m sorry.”

His admission pumps through my core like helium, my body nearly weightless. The confession shouldn’t be surprising, not with how he speaks his mind, but it’s been a week of silence. I was losing hope things could return to the way they were, or progress past it. I step closer, so he can hear me over the noise. “Apology accepted, but do I get an explanation?”

He drags his gaze down my body. It’s a thorough perusal—intimate, penetrating—flames sparking along my skin. His eyes linger on me, but he doesn’t speak. He rolls the pinky ring on his left hand the way he does when he’s puzzling something out. An ache travels up my thighs, heat expanding below my ribs. The longer he stays quiet, the more my skin tingles.

Finally, he releases his ring and slides his hand over my lower back. He leans forward and whispers, “I’ve wanted to do very dirty things to you and with you since Aspen, but I care about you too much to act on it. Hence my dickishness and the weirdness.”

My Perfect Mistake (Kelly Siskind)

myperfectmistake

What happens in Aspen is definitely not staying in Aspen. . .

A girls’ trip to Aspen was exactly what Shay needed to forget about her toxic ex-boyfriend. She’s got her girls, pristine slopes for skiing, and hot guys everywhere. Of course, her epic self-rediscovery goes completely to hell when a wild (and deliciously hot) skier knocks Shay on her ass . . . and war is declared.

Kolton doesn’t know what it is about Shay that makes him lose it. Not just his cool—although she does have an unholy gift for that — but his restraint. When anger gives way to explosive chemistry, they’re both shaken with the intensity of it. But somewhere between lust and hate, Kolton and Shay realize they could have something real . . . if they don’t kill each other first.

Back in January I read Chasing Crazy by Kelly Siskind and I absolutely loved it. So, when Kelly’s second book hit Netgalley, my cursor was on the request button faster than lightning. And then the publisher refused me the book!!! I mean, dudes, WTF????!!!! I got what the problem was: I wasn’t in the countries they were searching for. But I really wanted to read this book, like really really, so I did the smart thing, and wrote to them directly requesting this one and one other (a sequel to another book I had already read and liked), explaining why I NEEDED BOTH BOOKS! They were awesome, and in 2 hours I had the links to both books :D. Smartest decision ever, because both books got 4.5 stars from me 😀 . Now, on to the review…

This book blew me away! As I said, this wasn’t my first book by Kelly Siskind, so I was expecting fun and romantic, but this… wow… just wow… I was laughing so much right from the start that I had to stop having lunch. People, I was snorting, my food was coming out, it was not pretty, and I was in public! Another solution would have been stop reading, but stop eating was more practical at that precise moment. I will read ANYTHING Siskind writes! It’s such an easy, hilarious, fun and heartfelt read. Seriously guys, this book rocks!

I absolutely loved the characters, all of them, ALL, 7% in and I was already wondering when we were going to get a book about Nico, because seriously, a huge cop who moves in with his best friend to take care of a baby? I want to know more, Kelly tell us more!

Shay was amazing! I was smitten by this girl from the moment she started narrating the story. It was amazing to see her recognize what was wrong with everything about her previous relationship and take life by its horns. And Terminator Shay was AMAZEBALLS! And then we have Kolton, and oh boy, I never thought much about guys with long hair… until this dude showed up on this book. Kolton was great, I can’t even, I mean, I’m a sucker for stories about single dads, but Kolton’s relationship with his son and his friends, and his job, and everything around him blew me away.

The relationship was funny as well from the get-go. Their initial hatred for each other was so much fun, and when that turns into something else… oh well… the BATHROOM… I’m still not over the bathroom incident. I really loved the progression of the story, it’s no insta-love. Sure, they’re are instantly attracted to one another, but the feelings develop with time and conversations and actions, and a lot of woo. I loved how supportive they were of each other, whether it was career wise, or the simple things such as supporting Jackson the best way they could. I also LOVED JACKSON and his involvement in their story. The kid is adorable and I wanted more of him.

When things get tricky, I did understand both stands, and my heart was breaking because I did understand both sides and I wanted both of them to just let go… with that said, I loved the last scene, and the only reason this book didn’t get 5 full stars from me it’s that it ended too abruptly. I needed one more chapter, just one, with a sauna, or a pillow forte, or some kind of normal thing like that…

Now, important question… when does the next book come out? I need to know more about Lily, at least I want to know if her story will be with who I think it is, because I so need that to happen! Also, I need some Raven and Nico, I’m so curious about what went down in Aspen between those two. Honestly, I just need more! 😀

So, guys, read this book! It’s fun, beautiful and AMAZINGLY HOT!!!!
