Top Ten Tuesday: Underrated Books I Loved

top 10 tuesday

Hello, welcome back to another Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is:

Top Ten Books We Enjoyed That Have Under 2000 Ratings On Goodreads (we’ve done underrated books a bunch of times in the past 6 years but thanks to Lenore at Celebrity Readers for suggesting this topic as a new way to talk about underrated books especially when underrated is subjective. An easy way to find this — go to Goodreads, your read list, at the top of your read list where it says settings you can add a column for # of ratings, then you can sort by that. If you aren’t a Goodreads user you can look up books you think are underrated and see what their # of reviews is on Goodreads? Or if that’s too hard you can spin it some other way!

This is a super easy topic for me, because I mainly read underrated books. Reading a lot of ARCs from Netgalley leads to this, and I actually love to discover all these new books and recommending the hell out of them.

This is What Goodbye Looks Like (Olivia Rivers)

thisiswhatgoodbyelookslike

Lea Holder watched a boy die in the same DUI accident that ruined Lea’s legs and threw her little sister into a coma. As the only eye-witness to the accident, if she tells the truth in court, the drunk driver will go to prison and the dead boy’s family will have justice.

But Lea lies.

If she had told the truth, Lea would have put her own mom in prison for causing the accident. With the trial over and her mom set free, Lea attempts to rebuild her shattered life as she waits for her little sister to wake from her coma.

When Lea transfers schools, she finds herself in the same senior class as Seth Ashbury, the brother of the boy her mom killed. As Lea gets to know the person buried underneath Seth’s grief, she quickly falls for his quick wit and passionate soul. But Seth remains completely oblivious that Lea is the same girl who robbed his family of justice.

As their relationship deepens, Lea finally gets a taste of the love that’s been missing from her life since the accident. But soon she’s faced with a choice: she can continue her lies and accept the comfort it gives them both. Or she can tell Seth the truth about everything, and risk destroying both her family and her newfound love.

I read this book as a buddy read with  Cátia @The Girl Who Read Too Much and Kat @Life and Other Disasters, a.k.a., Three Bloagteers (Kat totally named us!). Check out Kat’s review HERE.

This was my second book by Olivia Rivers, I previously read (and loved) Tone Deaf, so I knew I would probably like her writing, and I was really hoping to love the story. And to be honest, I kind of did, until around 75% of the book, and then it crumbled in my opinion and I just couldn’t love it or rate it above 3 stars.

But I DID love the writing, though I still found some words repeated a lot. I mostly liked the characters, and I say mostly because even though I wanted to love Lea, I couldn’t for the most part, because I couldn’t truly ignore how sick I thought her actions were. I did like Seth though, and I liked his relationship with each of his friends, and how much they actually felt like a family, who protected each other fiercely.

I really liked Seth and Lea’s journey with their grief, and in Lea’s case, with her guilt, though I ultimately felt that none of those things were completely dealt with. While I do love the importance given to family and, particularly, to siblings, I thought that Lea’s sister, Camille, was given a weight that I didn’t particularly liked.

I did struggled with some of Lea’s decisions throughout the story, but most of all, with her reasoning behind some of those decisions. When she finally decided to do the right thing, I felt she did it for the wrong reasons, and failed (at a lot of points) to consider the impact of her decisions on not only her family, but Seth’s as well. I also thought she failed to see how her parents were dealing with some things, and she belittled their feelings about her sister, and I didn’t think it was ok.

I didn’t like the ending, at all. Not only did I not agree with a lot of things, but then it wrapped up neatly and so well (while not at all at the same time), that it felt unrealistic, and I honestly felt that it wasn’t the way that served the story better. I thought the goal of the book was their journey to being able to say goodbye to the people they loved and lost, but that turned out not to be quite like that. Some smaller things also bothered me, but they wouldn’t have made such an impact if I wasn’t already mad at something else.

In the end, this had a huge potential, but the last 1/4 ruined it a bit for me. It was still an emotional read, but it made me mad more than anything else. The book as a whole it’s still worth it, and I think most of you won’t have the same issues as me, not at all.

  6. Stay Until We Break (Hub City #2) by Mercy Brown – I read book 1, Loud is How I Love You, a few months back, and I loved it. So I was super excited when I got approved for this eARC on Netgalley.
  7. In the Hope of Memories by Olivia Rivers – Kat read this book last month and loved it, so Cátia and me recided to request it from Netgalley, so I’ll be buddy reading it with Cátia @The Girl Who Read Too Much.
  8. Heartfall by J.B. McGee – yet another eARC that I’ll probably read with Cátia.
  9. On The Brink by Kate Willoughby – this is a short novella, a M/M hockey romance, so I obviously requested it from Netgalley and I’ll definitly be reading it soon.

  11. Heat It Up by Stina Lindenblatt – another eARC from netgalley that I’ll be reading with Cátia 🙂 .
  12. How Not to Fall by Emily Foster – yet another eARC that I’ll buddy read with Cátia.
  13. Wrong Place, Right Time by Elle Casey – I saw a great review of this book, so me and Cátia requested it from Netgalley and we’ll be reading it soon-ish… the release date is in July, so this is low priority right now.
  14. Slightly Stalky by Amy Vansant – this book just somehow screams summer to me, maybe it’s because of that gorgeous blue… either way, this will be yet another buddy read with Cátia.

This is my TBR for June. Once again I’ll be reading A LOT of books with Cátia @The Girl Who Read Too Much, you can check out her TBR for June HERE.

May Book Haul

maybookhaul

Hey guys. Here we are, at the end of another month, and I’m bringing you another book haul. This month I didn’t haul as much books as last month, but it was still a pretty good one 🙂 .

physicalbooks_may

This month I bought The Rose and the Dagger and A Court of Mist and Fury. I still haven’t read any of them, but I will soon, and I just had to have them as soon as they were out. I’m a little sad about TRATD‘s colour, the blue on the paperback is not the best, but ACOMAF is gorgeous. I finally received my paperback signed copy of More Than Music by Elizabeth Briggs, which was sent to me by Elodie Nowodazkij after I won a giveaway she was hosting.

Once again, most of these books I got at Kindle deals, for nothing!

Tone Deaf (Olivia Rivers)

tonedeaf

Ali Collins was a child prodigy destined to become one of the greatest musicians of the twenty-first century — until she was diagnosed with a life-changing brain tumor. Now, at seventeen, Ali lives in a soundless world where she gets by with American Sign Language and lip-reading. She’s a constant disappointment to her father, a retired cop fighting his own demons, and the bruises are getting harder to hide.

When Ali accidentally wins a backstage tour with the chart-topping band Tone Deaf, she’s swept back into the world of music. Jace Beckett, the nineteen-year-old lead singer of the band, has a reputation. He’s a jerk and a player, and Ali wants nothing to do with him. But there’s more to Jace than the tabloids let on. When Jace notices Ali’s bruises and offers to help her escape to New York, Ali can’t turn down the chance at freedom and a fresh start. Soon she’s traveling cross-country, hidden away in Jace’s RV as the band finishes their nationwide tour. With the help of Jace, Ali sets out to reboot her life and rediscover the music she once loved.

Going into this book I was fairly certain that I would enjoy it, because Kat @Life and Other DIsasters did, and I trust her opinion. You can check her take on this book here.

I LOVED IT! In my head this book is kind of like a mix between The Mortal Instruments and Everything Everything, but the plot has nothing to do with either one of those stories, lol, it’s just the vibe… is it weird?!

The writing is wonderful. I never read a book about a deaf MC, and I was curious to see how that would be incorporated to the story and I was pleasantly surprised by the result. Not only was ASL well explained and included, but each reference to vibrations and what Ali felt when someone was talking, walking, moving, felt real.

I loved all the main characters of this book. Ali was an amazing protagonist, she was so damn strong! I really liked how she hadn’t lost hope at a better life, even after everything she endured. I also liked Jace a lot, yes, he’s a much darker character, because there’s so much in his past, and he thinks he’ll stay like that forever, but still, even being down, pessimistic, he still cares and hopes, and he’s just great. The rest of the band is bonkers and amazing! I loved Killer most of all – bonus points for him for liking Doctor Who and David Tennant – , and I loved that all the band supported Jace, even when they didn’t agree with him completely.

Also, Jace, Arrow and Killer reminded me so much of TMI! Jace because of the name and attitude, Arrow just reminded me of Alec, always making sure his family is ok, fiercely protective, and Killer read like a mix of Magnus, Isabelle and Simon!

The romance was so sweet. I really liked how it evolved, how they became close, and shared parts of themselves with each other, understood each other, before anything else happened. And Jace with Ali was the sweetest thing. The way he touched her, and cared for her, was a huge contrast to the persona he showed the world, and that was amazing.

This book also highlights a huge problem in our system: how easy it is to hide that a child is victim of abuse at home. It will definitly make you think about it.

To sum it up, I LOVED THIS BOOK. If you like YA contemporary romance, with a touch of dark subjects, give this book a shot. You won’t regret it. 😀

April TBR

april_TBR

Hello 😀 . Today I’ll show you my TBR for this month. In March I managed to read 22 books by some miracle. Granted, one was a super short novella and another one was a short story, but still, it was the most I ever read in a single month, and most books were finished in the span of 24 hours. So, I hope I have a similarly awesome reading month in April, though I won’t aim that high, because that’s crazy.

I’m going for 15 books, of which 2.5 of them are already finished (yes, it’s still the 3rd day of the month…).

AprilTBR

  1. The Girl From Everywhere by Heidi Heilig – Me and Cátia are both about halfway through with this book. It’s good, but neither of us has been in the mood for it.
  2. Changing His Game (The Reynolds Brothers, #1) by Justine Elvira – I actually finished this book already (and I was so disappointed).
  3. Roommates by Erin Leigh – And I finished this one already too…
  4. Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare – This beauty will be a buddy read with Kat @Life and Other Disasters and Cátia @The Girl Who Read Too Much. After weeks of waiting, Cátia is finally getting her book on monday, and we will begin this journey. It will probably take us a bit to get through it, but we will!
  5. Once Upon a Dream (Twisted Tales #2) by Liz Braswell – I didn’t like the first one a bit, but I’ll give this one a shot.
  6. Catch You (Love Me, I’m Famous 0.5) by M.H. Soars – Warning, the next 5 book are buddy reads with Cátia @The Girl Who Read Too Much, because we love to request the same ARCs on Netgalley.
  7. The One That Got Away (Kingston Ale House #1) by A.J. Pine – Another ARC I’m reading with Cátia
  8. Crazy, Stupid, Fauxmance (Creative HeArts #3) by Shellee Roberts – And another one… I’m so excited for this one, because I read the second book of this series last month.
  9. Pieces of You and Me by Erin Fletcher – Another ARC I’m reading with Cátia.
  10. That Thing Between Eli and Gwen by J.J. McAvoy – And another!
  11. Tone Deaf by Olivia Rivers – The author asked me if I would like to read and review her book… hells YES! (Kat @Life and Other Disasters is also reading this one…)
  12. Anything You Want by Geoff Herbach – Me and Kat @Life and Other Disasters are finally getting to this one. And Sara @Freadom Library is joining us 😀
  13. Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover – I’m going to Portugal later this month, which means I’ll finally be able to buy CoHo’s ebooks!!! (Kindle store’s prices differ from Portugal to Spain, and they’re way nicer at home).
  14. The Year We Fell Down (The Ivy Years #1) by Sarina Bowen – I bought this book this month (for free), so I’m hoping I get some time to get to it. Everybody says wonders of Sarina Bowen, and I fell in love with Him and Us.
  15. #Junkie (GearShark #1) by Cambria Hebert – I stumbled upon this book by accident, and after loving  Him and Us so much, I think I’ll enjoy this one as well.

This is what I plan to read this month of April, I might not get to all the books, but I’ll try to finish all my ARCs – the goal on Netgalley keeps beeing the 80% ratio… not far now.

I also think that some books will take a little bit of time, such as Lady Midnight. Not only is the book huge, but buddy reading implies that we have to keep a steady pace between the 3 of us 😉 .
