The Harry Potter 30 Days Challenge #6

Welcome back for the 6th day of The Harry Potter 30 Days Challenge. Leannaatc @Short Story Long had this idea of a month full of Harry Potter and you can find the prompt for each day here here.

– Day 6: Which house would you want to be in? –

I like that this questions the house you would WANT to be in, as opposed to the house you ARE (yes people, ARE because Pottermore has sorted me already, and as I said before, I’m a proud Ravenclaw).

I’ll approach this on two different fronts. The first will be the house I kind of wish I was in, and then why I’m happy to be a Ravenclaw. Ok?

Hufflepuff!!!!

Yes, Gryffindor says what?! I don’t want to be courageous and what-not, I would ideally like to not be judgmental at all.

The Sorting Hat says it best:

“You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil

“For Hufflepuff, hard workers were
Most worthy of admission;”

“Said Hufflepuff, “I’ll teach the lot
And treat them just the same.””

I mean, Hufflepuffs are just and loyal, patients and they treat everyone equal, it doesn’t matter who your family is, or if you’re super smart or not so much, or brave or a little afraid… everyone had a place in Hufflepuff, and that is quite the goal, right?

Oh, and it is the house who has produced few dark wizards from all!

“The Hufflepuffs virtually to a person stay, as do the Gryffindors. Now, the Gryffindors comprise a lot of foolhardy and show-offy people. That’s just the way it is. I’m a Gryffindor I’m allowed to say it. You know, there’s bravery and there’s also showboating, and sometimes the two go together. The Hufflepuffs stayed for a different reason. They weren’t trying to show off, they weren’t being reckless. That’s the essence of Hufflepuff House.” – J.K. Rowling

Also, Tonks is an Hufflepuff, and Sprout, and Hannah Abbott (who marries Neville), and Cedric, …

And check this BuzzFeed post if you’re still not convinced that Hufflepuffs rule!

Ravenclaw: “Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure.

Before I did the sorting I was sure I was going to end up a Hufflepuff, don’t really know why, but then I was sorted into Ravenclaw and it made sense. Ravenclaw values intelligence, knowledge, and wit, I mean it has an eagle as its symbol!

But as the Sorting Hat said:

“Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
if you’ve a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;”

“For Ravenclaw, the cleverest
Would always be the best;”

“Said Ravenclaw, “We’ll teach those whose
Intelligence is surest.””

So, Ravenclaws are smart, witty, they have a love for knowledge and, unfortunately, they think they are a little better than other people… but hey, in this, the only house that does not fail is Hufflepuff!

I’m a proud Ravenclaw, and I choose blue and copper, by the way – still not sure why they changed the colours for the movies.

And, we have the fantastic Luna Lovegood in our house!!!

Harry Potter: Sorting Hat Song (1995)

Because it is still Harry Potter day, I’ll leave here one of my favorite’s Sorting Hat’s song from Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix, or you know, when things start to get real and bad…

Presentation1

In times of old, when I was new,
And Hogwarts barely started,
The founders of our noble school
Thought never to be parted.

United by a common goal,
They had the selfsame yearning
To make the world’s best magic school
And pass along their learning.

“Together we will build and teach”
The four good friends decided.
And never did they dream that they
Might some day be divided.

For were there such friends anywhere
As Slytherin and Gryffindor?
Unless it was the second pair
Of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw,

So how could it have gone so wrong?
How could such friendships fail?
Why, I was there, so I can tell
The whole sad, sorry tale.

Said Slytherin, “We’ll teach just those
Whose ancestry’s purest.”
Said Ravenclaw, “We’ll teach those whose
Intelligence is surest.”

Said Gryffindor, “We’ll teach all those
With brave deeds to their name.”
Said Hufflepuff, “I’ll teach the lot
And treat them just the same.”

These differences caused little strife
When first they came to light.
For each of the four founders had
A house in which they might

Take only those they wanted, so,
For instance, Slytherin
Took only pure-blood wizards
Of great cunning just like him.

And only those of sharpest mind
Were taught by Ravenclaw
While the bravest and the boldest
Went to daring Gryffindor.

Good Hufflepuff, she took the rest
and taught them all she knew,
Thus, the houses and their founders
Maintained friendships firm and true.

So Hogwarts worked in harmony
for several happy years,
but then discord crept among us
feeding on our faults and fears.

The Houses that, like pillars four
had once held up our school
now turned upon each other and
divided, sought to rule.

And for a while it seemed the school
must meet an early end.
what with dueling and with fighting
and the clash of friend on friend.

And at last there came a morning
when old Slytherin departed
and though the fighting then died out
he left us quite downhearted.

And never since the founders four
were whittled down to three
have the Houses been united
as they once were meant to be.

And now the Sorting Hat is here
and you all know the score:
I sort you into Houses
because that is what I’m for.

But this year I’ll go further,
listen closely to my song:
though condemned I am to split you
still I worry that it’s wrong,

Though I must fulfill my duty
and must quarter every year
still I wonder whether sorting
may not bring the end I fear.

Oh, know the perils, read the signs,
the warning history shows,
for our Hogwarts is in danger
from external, deadly foes

And we must unite inside her
or we’ll crumble from within
I have told you, I have warned you…
let the Sorting now begin.
