Slap Shot (Kelly Jamieson)

My name’s Max Hall, and I need to f***. As a pro hockey player who’s been away from the game for over a year, my libido has picked one hell of an an inconvenient time to come roaring back to life.

After my wife died from a rare form of cancer, sex was the last thing on my mind. Same with hockey, the other love of my life. Now, after fifteen months of eating too much, drinking too much, and generally just feeling sorry for myself, I’m facing a steep uphill battle to get my ass in shape and play my way back onto the Chicago Aces.

So I’m not looking for a relationship. Just sex. Yeah, I know how that makes me sound. But the truth is, I’ll never love another woman the way I loved my wife. When I meet a sexy bridesmaid at my teammate’s wedding, I decide to scratch that itch. A fling with Kendra Armstrong in her posh hotel room could be just what the trainer ordered.

Not only is Kendra smokin’ hot, she’s dynamite in bed — one of the perks of being a sex toy designer. Since she lives in New York anyway, we agree to keep things casual, no strings attached. The arrangement is perfect . . . until one of us falls in love. And it’s not me.

I’ve read a few books of this series so far, but this one was my favorite so far, for sure. It’s so so good! This series is overall fantastic.

Slap Shot is unique compared to the other books in this series, given that unlike the other ones, this is told on the first person. I’m a huge fan of first person romance books, so YAY. Also, to add to the amazing and different things, this book is also told in single POV, through the man’s point of view! Which is another thing I LOVE in romances. First person, male only POV… YES! And to top it all off, the writing is amazing, and funny, and deep, and I was a fan from the first page.

The characters are also fantastic. We had already seen Hallsy in the other books, and I’m so happy he got his own story because he deserved it. He’s such a strong guy, and even though he’s a bit clueless at times, he’s still an amazing and loving person. Kendra is just the sweetest and fierce.

I absolutely loved the plot. This type of romance is not easy, because the author needs to find a perfect balance between showing how right the new romance is, without making the past relationship any less, and I think Kelly did an amazing job here. The connection between Kendra and Max is palpable, but I really liked how it developed slowly, from a physical thing to a lot lot more. And the chemistry?! Explosive!!!

Also, I loved the cameos from another of Jamieson’s series, eheh. So good.

I loved this book, and now I can’t wait to see what else Kelly Jamieson brings us. So far, I’ve loved all her books, but this one was off the charts. So yeah, if you haven’t started this series yet, get on it.

Hands down, my favorite thing in the world is to score. Touchdowns.

Don’t let the fact that I’m the leading pick in the Most Valuable Playboy charity auction fool you. These days, I’m only a player on the field. I’ve kept my pants zipped all season long — and it has been long — because nothing’s more important than leading my team to victory every week. Except maybe escaping from the team owner’s recently-widowed and handsy-as-hell sister who’s dead set on winning more than a date with me.

Enter Violet and a well-placed Hail Mary.

She’s my best friend’s sister with a smile as sweet as cherry pie and a mind that runs quicker than the 40-yard-dash. After Violet saves the day with the highest bid, I don’t even give her a two-minute warning before I kiss her in front of the whole crowd and then announce that she’s my girlfriend. Which would be fine except my agent tells me we have to keep up the act while he’s negotiating my contract.

Violet takes one for the team and pretends to be mine, but our boyfriend-girlfriend scrimmage quickly turns into a full contact sport, and I want it to go into overtime. The problem is — I’ve been riding the bench for years.

How can a guy like me, who finally has a chance to prove his worth on the field, convince the girl she’s most valuable to his heart?

MOST VALUABLE PLAYBOY is a brand new standalone sports romance written in the guy’s POV!

Most Valuable Playboy was another fantastic book by Lauren Blakely! Blakely is definitly my go-to author if I want a great and funny romance, and so far, I’ve loved every single book that I read by her.

Obviously I loved the writing, and the fact that this book is told exclusively through Cooper’s POV was an added bonus. You guys know how much I love a book told only through the guy’s point of view, they’re usually fantastic, and Blakely always does an amazing job with those.

Cooper was just such an amazing guy to read about. He’s confident and fun, but he’s also not afraid of his feelings, and he faces things head on. I loved this. I was a bit scared that the fact that Violet was his BFF’s little sister would be a problem, but I was so pleasantly surprised by the way that Cooper dealt with all his issues. Violet was also a delight, and even though I like a book written only through the guy’s POV, I always feel like we don’t get to know the lady as well, but hey, I’ll take it, because from what I could see, she was fantastic and the most perfect match for Cooper.

These two together were all kinds of adorable! They just fit perfectly together, and they were just meant to be. Their chemistry was also off the charts and the hot scenes were, well, HOT! And the fact that they were already super great friends before they got involved, only made everything better, because it was so clear that they actually KNEW each other on a much deeper level.

This story was so cute. I really liked it, and I adored the plot and the depth of the feelings these characters had for one another. I definitly recommend Most Valuable Playboy, another amazing book by Lauren Blakely.

Excerpt:

Always a bridesmaid.

No Action Armstrong.

Ball Cap Boy.

Mr. Clean.

The Unused Insurance Plan.

Oh wait. Here’s one more, a personal fave.

Best Butt in the NFL.

Those are just some of the nicknames I’ve been given in the last few years. They don’t bug me. Not one bit. They’ve all been true, especially that last one. You should see my ass. You can bounce a quarter off my cheeks.

Here’s the thing — when you spend the first three years of your career warming the bench for the best player in the league, you can’t get a chip on your shoulder. You have to stay sharp and be ready for that moment when you swap out a ball cap for a helmet and get your pants dirty.

My time has finally come this season, and so far, we’re winning.

But tonight isn’t about what happens between the opening kickoff and the end of the fourth quarter.

Tonight is about the one game I’ve always dominated.

For the last few years, I’ve been the highest ticket item in the players’ annual charity auction, and I can’t help enjoying that. Because the guy I’ve backed up has been called a lot of things — a legend, the greatest ever, a titan of the game — but the one I most enjoy is “second-best-looking quarterback on the Renegades.”

Hey, I didn’t give him that name. The media did, deciding the dude who play second-string — me — had a prettier face. Before this season, I’d seen a grand total of 120 minutes of playing time in my first three years, but I’ve taken home the top honors in the charity auction, where some of the loveliest ladies come to bid on the players they want to take out for a night on the town.

Ah, the memories of those dates have warmed my heart, and other parts, on the sidelines when the games were dull. Evenings in limos, testing the strength of the leather backseat, nights in hotels that lasted way past dawn, mutually and blissfully ignoring the no physical contact between the winner and the player rule.

Yeah, I’ve enjoyed the fuck out of being paraded on stage in front of hundreds of women, their slender arms lifted in the air, raising their bids higher on me than all the other guys. It’s been my one chance to shine, even to stand out.

Those days are behind me, though, now that I’m finally leading the team down the field every single Sunday. I still expect to rake in top dollar for the charity I gladly support, but this time, I won’t be living it up and letting loose after hours. I have a reputation to protect, and a season on the line.

The trouble is, the woman who has her eyes on me at the Most Valuable Playboy charity auction wants my full enchilada, and it’s not on the menu anymore.

Guess that means it’s time to call an audible on the line of scrimmage.

The Player (K. Bromberg)

Baseball has never been sexier in an all-new novel by New York Times Bestselling Author, K. Bromberg.

Easton Wylder is baseball royalty. The game is his life. His passion. His everything.

So, when an injury threatens to end Easton’s season early, the team calls in the renowned physical therapist, Doc Dalton, to oversee his recovery. Except it’s not Doc who greets Easton for his first session, but rather his daughter, Scout. She may be feisty, athletic, defiant, and gorgeous, but Easton is left questioning whether she has what it takes to help him.

Scout Dalton’s out to prove a female can handle the pressure of running the physical therapy regimen of an MLB club. And that proof comes in the form of getting phenom Easton Wylder back on the field. But getting him healthy means being hands-on.

And with a man as irresistible as Easton, being hands-on can only lead to one thing, trouble. Because the more she touches him, the more she wants him, and she can’t want him. Not when it’s her job to side in the club’s best interest if he’s ready to play.

But when sparks fly and fine lines are crossed, can they withstand the heat or is one of them bound to get burned?

I started this book on whim, and I absolutely loved it. It was my first book by K. Bromberg, and I’m sure it won’t be my last. The book is told in dual POV, and the writing is great. Finally, after reading I don’t know how many books about baseball, I finally understood the positions on the field. YAY!

I really liked Scout and Easton, I loved how similar they were, doing what they thought was right for their parents and idols, and losing themselves a bit in the process. I also really liked the romance, though I wish there had been a little more buildup to it. Some things just moved a little too fast in my opinion.

But the thing is, this book has a cliffhanger, a huge one. I felt a little bit cheated by it, because it’s one of those cases where you NEED the second book right after, because everything is left up in the air… careers, romances, life in general… it sucked a bit because of that.

That’s why this is not a proper review, because I felt like I didn’t finish a story. There’s no conclusion, there’s just a huge black hole at the end. But I can’t wait to read book 2 to see what happens next.

So guys, be aware that if you want to read it, you need book 2 too. Ok?
And has any of you read them? What are your thoughts?

The Total Package (Stephanie Evanovich)

thetotalpackage

Star quarterback, first-round draft-pick, and heartthrob Tyson Palmer has made a name for himself with his spectacular moves. When the head coach of the Austin Mavericks refuses to let him waste his million-dollar arm, Tyson makes a Hail Mary pass at redemption and succeeds with everyone . . . except Dani, whose negative comments about his performance draw high ratings and spectacular notices of her own.

Dani can’t forgive Tyson’s transgressions or forget the sizzling history the two of them shared in college, a passionate love Tyson casually threw away. And even more infuriating, he doesn’t realize that the bombshell with huge ratings is the cute girl whose heart he once broke.

But can a woman trying to claw her way to the top and a quarterback who knows all about rock bottom make it to the Super Bowl without destroying each other? And what will happen when Tyson—riding high now that he’s revived his career—realizes he needs to make an even more important comeback with Dani? Can he make some spectacular moves to get past her defenses—or will she sideline him for good?

I usually love sports romances, but I have to admit that this one just wasn’t for me.

First of all I had some problems with the writing. This book is written in omniscient third person and while it was fun to read for some chapters, it became confusing and not very enticing later on.

In the first chapter we see Tyson and Dani hookup, after she had tutored him a few years back. Tyson was a terrible point of his life, an addict, about to lose his job and with a lot of scandals surrounding him. Somehow, Dani believes she can fix him, so she decides to sleep with him, in hopes that from just that, he’ll turn his life around. Obviously things don’t turn out that way, at all.

The book then follows Tyson road to sobriety, which was quite interesting to read, but utterly slow and it provided nothing to the romance development. We spend the first third of the book learning how deep Tyson has fallen and how he has risen… rehab, training, eating, making friends… it’s a kind of boring exposition his day to day life for a few months. Then he get’s back to the team and the book jumps ahead 4 years. I was ok with the time jump, but all that came before should have been shortened.

When the time jumps, we finally get another look at Dani. Well, let’s just say that her hookup over 4 years before had consequences, and while building her reporting career – which she does because she somehow wants to get near Tyson, she got mad at him because Tyson didn’t recognized her and accidentally uttered some words of animosity towards him. When they end up working on the same place, it’s clear that she’s still has feelings for the guy, and they end up becoming close in the process…

As I said, I had a lot of problems with this one. Apart from the writing style, which irked me at times, the dialog, especially between Dani and Tyson, was cringeworthy. I mean, who says “I could love you” after not seeing someone for years?

Then there’s the characters… while I appreciated Tyson, I couldn’t bring myself to like Dani. This is a girl who at 19 decided she was in love with a guy, which is ok, but almost 10 years later, and without that much contact, she was still very much in love with him. Then she did something that is on my “shit” list, and while I understood it at first, I couldn’t stand it after they got closer again.

Ultimately the pacing was off, the writing style was not my favorite and the main couple lacked something… and said the most weird things to each other… I didn’t love it, but it’s not that it’s bad, you know? Just OK…
