Top Ten Tuesday: Unexpectedly Awesome “Moms”

ttt

Hello, welcome back to another Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is:

Mother’s Day related Freebie: favorite moms in literature, books about motherhood, best mother/daughter or son relationships, books to buy your mom, worst moms in literature, etc. etc.

This one was hard for me, because more often that not, mom’s are not the most present people in YA, and most romances I read happen before parenthood. But, I found a way around it. I’m showing you 10 books with some awesome mom figures, who were thrown quite unexpectedly into the role, for several reasons.

Top Ten Tuesday: Things I Want More Of

ttt

Hello, welcome back to another Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is:

Ten Things On Our Reading Wishlist (topic originally done January 2014) — things you want to see more of in books — tropes, a time period, a specific type of character, an issue tackled, a certain plot, etc. All those things that make you think I WANT MORE OF THIS IN BOOKS!

Today I’m going for the obvious Things I Want More Of.

1. More women STEM a.k.a. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

This one for me is a no brainer. As a woman in science myself, I never truly see myself represented when reading most books, and I would like to see some kick ass scientists portrayed.

2. Books set in Europe, Asia, etc, but with people native to said area

There is a general lack of books set anywhere else but the US or UK. We need to see characters and places from all over the world.

3. Discussions about the lack of proper Sex Ed in the US

I think this is a huge problem in the education system in the USA, so I would like to see more YA books acknowledging this.

John Oliver did a great show about it awhile back, so you should definitly check this out, if you haven’t yet:

4. Discussions about the lack of proper education on HUMAN EVOLUTION in the US

Yeah, this is one theme that is very close to my heart, as it is what I’ve been studying since I got into college, 14 years ago… Do you guys know that in some states in the USA Human Evolution is not taught in school? They’re actually forbidden to teach anything like the Evolution theory, and instead teach only Creationism to their youngsters.

5. Neurodiversity

I want more diversity in general, ok? But I do think that there needs to be more discussion and more understanding to Neurodiversity, because there is still such a huge stigma regarding this.

6. More racial diversity in NA and Romance

While I do think that NA has been improving greatly, I still feel it lacks some representation, especially in terms of racial diversity, and I would like to see more of it.

7. Bathroom uses

This is a very common “problem” in books, that I’m able to look over it when the writing is compelling and doesn’t pull your attention to those silly little places in time when a bathroom would be necessary, I mean, I read about so many girls that wake up, get dressed and leave their dorms or houses without taking a leak… am I the weird person here? Because I wake up with a super full bladder.

8. Periods

I’m looking at you NA and romance! I truly struggle to understand when in books the girls have sex all month long without even a mention to their periods. Look, I’m not saying you should truly mention them or whatever, I’m saying that it gives an unrealistic image. I was reading Addicted to You and I remember thinking “How does Lily maintain her sex addiction, sleeping around with STRANGERS? Doesn’t she interrupt her birth control pill?”… Yeah… I was thinking this while reading a book… Women have them, it’s natural, you can talk about it!

9. Academia settings in general

I would love to read more book set in the university setting, but not only the students, but those people following an Academic life. 😀

10. Nerdish books

Who doesn’t like books with a nerdy element to it? I know I do, and I like them a lot.

Top Ten Tuesday: Book Covers, Awesome Colors and Hair Dye

ttt

Hello, welcome back to another Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is:

Cover Theme Freebie: literally anyyyything about covers….top ten covers that scream Spring, ten books with ice cream on the cover, ten books with blue covers, etc. etc. THIS ONE COULD BE REALLY FUN and I can’t wait to see how creative your lists are!

So… My mind has been kind of set on experimenting with hair colors. I never dyed my hair before, but last month I decolored some of it and dyed it turquoise :D, and it’s still green-ish, and I love it. I want to lighten it even more and put some bold colors on it. So I thought, why not make it my TTT theme this week? Eheh, here we go then, Ten Book Covers Colors I Would Totally Dye My Hair With.

Top Ten Tuesday: Hmmm… Yeah… NO!

Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly NOT Want To Read A Book (topic originally done back in 2013) — tell us all your book turn offs!

Oh boy…

1. Iffy blurb

I think we’ve all been through this, right? A bad or dubious blurb is a sure way to turn me off a book. I might rethink it if someone I trust truly likes it though.

2. Horror or Thriller

I’m just not a fan of the genre… I might read something and like it, but it will be highly unlikely.

3. Middle Grade

Again, nothing against it, but at this point in my life, I just don’t connect to it.

4. Love shapes

Look, I’m not saying never, but if the blurb states it as the central thing in a book, no thank you.

5. Blatant DISCRIMINATION

Again, if the blurb of the book makes this clear, NO!

6. Instalove

Instalove is tricky, because I do like it sometimes, but not when the whole book centers on it.

7. Vampires, Zombies, WEREWOLVES, Aliens, etc

It’s usually not really my thing.

8. Self-Help

Look, I’m not bashing it or anything, but they’re totally not my thing, and I never felt the slightest urge to reach for them.

9. Poetry

I’m not saying never. But will I give them a second look at the bookstore? Yeah… noooo…

10. Bad writing

If I haven’t liked an author’s writing style, it’s very unlikely that I’ll reach for another book from that same author…

Top Ten Tuesday: It has it? I want it!

ttt

Hello, welcome back to another Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is:

Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly Want To Read A Book (topic originally done back in 2013 as top ten words/topics that will make me instantly want to read a book) — so yeah basically any topic or theme or ANYTHING (ie if X person recommends it) that will make you instantly want to pick up a book. My list will likely be called Jamie-bait because there are soooo certain things you can say in a summary or a review that will just instantly draw me to it!

This should be an easy one…

1. Beautiful Covers

I’m a sucker for a gorgeous cover. I have to admit that I sometimes request books on netgalley without even reading the blurb…

2. Sports Romance

Is this news to anyone? Especially Hockey!

3. College Romance

Same as the above!!!

4. Geeky Things

When a book mentions geeky things in the blurb, I want it.

5. All the ships

I’ll ship them all, so if a book has them, I want it.

6. Lay Lines

Incredibly, I’m digging this!!! Damn, I blame The Raven Boys for this.

7. Unique formats

Unique formats lige Illuminae really get me going.

8. Rom Coms

They’re usually so much fun, so I love them.

9. Book recommendations

When someone I trust recommends a book to me, I don’t even think twice.

10. Auto-buy authors

If one of my favorites is dropping a book, I’m gonna want to buy it.

Top Ten Tuesday: ARCs I’m Behind On

ttt

Hello, welcome back to another Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week there’s no theme, because the TTT is on hiatus until next week. But I didn’t want to skip it, so I came up with something to share with you guys.

I have a lot of books on my Netgalley shelf, books that I requested sometimes long ago and for one reason or another I haven’t read them yet. But I want to! And I will. So I thought I would share with you some of those books, so maybe if you’ve read any of them, you could tell my why I should up them on my reading list. 😀
