It’s been almost 2 weeks, and I still can’t believe it… Yes, I’m talking about that stupid election…

vtrump

It has been a few days since the election results came out, and I think I’m still in shock. It’s hard to wrap my head around this and how it happened, my brain can’t compute it.

I’ve been feeling the need to vent out my thoughts on the matter since day one, but I’ve also been unable to actually form them coherently, but I don’t care, I need to talk about it, I need to share why it’s such a disturbing idea to me.

First of all I think I’ll give you some context about me. I’m not a member of any minority. I’m a middle class, heterosexual, white woman. I’m “normal” by any western standard. But I was lucky enough to have been born in Portugal, in a free time, after the revolution. My next door neighbours while I was growing up were black people from one of the Portuguese old colonies. My mom and 2 older brothers were born in Angola. I was lucky enough that I lived in a huge city and in small villages, and I learned the life in the city and in the country. I started to travel at a young age, first with my dad, then alone and with my mom. I got to know different cultures, places and people. I’ve been to several places in Europe, I’ve been to Africa, I’ve been to Northern and Southern America, and I’ve been to Asia. I was raised with the knowledge that as a woman I could do anything. I decided to go into Science and I’m doing a PhD in an area where women dominate. I have several mixed race people in my family. My first boyfriend was from indian ancestry. My mother and brother live in Africa.

With everything said above, I’m a very open minded person. I never truly dealt with racism. I was never in a situation where someone told me I couldn’t do something because I was born a girl. Heck, my dad is the one cooking and cleaning in our house! I was never put down because of religion, or my lack of. I’m not saying racism, bigotry, xenophobia and chauvinism don’t exist in this country, because they sure do, I’m just saying that I was never that exposed to them.

So for ME, the result of the 2016 General Elections in the US is heartbreaking.

I’ll start by saying that I do understand somewhat why it happened. People wanted change, the process of globalization forgets a huge part of the population, and the system in the USA politics was in dire need of change. I understand that people are scared. I get all that. I really do. But how people thought that electing Donald Trump was the answer to their problems, it’s beyond me.

I have to say I don’t understand most of the criticism to Hillary Clinton. You might think that she wasn’t adequate for the job, but my problem is the “why” that people give for this fact. People call her corrupt, and again, why? People don’t trust her, why? The emails? Benghazi? People say that she’s an ice queen, she’s cold, and I wonder, would they think a cold man wouldn’t be good enough to hold office?

But still, no matter what your opinion of Hillary is or was, the question is:

HOW COULD ANYONE THINK THAT DONALD TRUMP WAS A BETTER OPTION?

We’re talking about a man who’s first message was about racism and xenophobia. A man who talked about deporting migrants and called Mexicans “criminal and rapists”.

A man who encouraged Islamophobia saying that all Muslims should be registered, and that they should be subjected to special kinds of checks. And their entering the US should came to a halt.

This is a guy who incited violence in his rallies!!!

A man who defended the use of torture and the killing of civilians.

This is a man who bragged about sexual assaulting women. And then when accused of it, his defense was “did you see them? they weren’t pretty enough for me to sexual abuse them“.

A man who feels the need to score a woman’s looks each times he talks about them!

A man who made fun of disabled people.

Who said that women should get punished for getting abortions.

Insulted war heroes and veterans!

A man who is supported by the KKK!

I don’t know guys, I don’t understand how this happened. How money came before human rights. How 42% of women voted for this awful awful person. How minorities still thought that voting for this abhorrence was better than to vote for someone who fought for women’s and children’s rights all over the world.

Trump wants to defund planned parenthood.

He said that the solution to the school shootings, was to allow children to carry firearms. CHILDREN!

This is a guy who publicly said that global warming is a stunt created by the Chinese!

HOW DID SOMEONE WHO LIED THROUGHOUT HIS ALL CAMPAIGN STILL WON?

He did though… don’t ask me why, because I’ve been waking up since November 9 still thinking that this is just a bad dream that I’m gonna wake up from at any time, but he did. Now what’s to be done?

In all honesty, from someone sitting from the outside, I don’t believe that anything can keep him from office. But people need to keep questioning everything. And exposing everything.

Protests are great, and I agree that people should express their feelings – it’s their right and this is an important issue – but they will solve very little, unfortunately. People will need to be vigilant in the upcoming years.

People need to actively show that they don’t support Trump’s views.

We don’t need silent shows of support to the issues regarding minorities. We need unequivocal ones.

Stop getting your news through Facebook, and if you do, make sure they come from a reliable source, because 39% of the “republican news” during the campaign were FALSE! Pure lies. So support real news teams. Subscribe to actual papers. As John Oliver so well put it, donate to the institutions that will need founds more than ever in the upcoming years.

But now that several days have passed, the reality of what it means for this man to become the president of the United States keeps getting scarier. He chose Michael T. Flynn for National Security Adviser, a guy who said that “Fear of Muslims is RATIONAL.” and defends strong ties to Russia. His Attorney General will be Jeff Sessions, who defends strict immigration laws and made a few racist remarks a few years back. Then we have Steve Bannon as Chief strategist and senior adviser, and there’s just no way around this one, because he’s a white supremacist.

And Mike Pence as his VP! This is a person who defends conversion therapy and said that if abortions were allowed for rape victims, then all women would want to be raped in order to miss work!

This is beyond scary!

At this point, and even though this is looking worse by the minute, it doesn’t even matter if he does something while he sits in the White House, because he’s already done more than enough. He made people afraid.

The fact that this piece of shit was elected, legitimized and validated hate crimes all over the country, because hey, if a guy who says those deplorable stuff gets elected, it means that the other people can do it too, right?

This is sickening. It’s disgusting. I can’t rationalize how a person like him, with his ideologies, with his lies, was able to convince so many people to vote for him.

I’m worried for everyone who lives in the US. I’m worried that some European countries will try to follow suit. I’m scared for what this could mean to women’s and LGBT’s rights. I’m afraid that this will be normalized.

This is NOT normal!

Wandering About: Death Valley, Palm Springs and Calico – USA (2006)

wandering about

Hey guys! Today I’m sharing some photos of a small leg of my trip to the USA in 2006. In my first time in the US, I went to Los Angeles and Las Vegas, with a detour to Palm Springs. After leaving LA we stopped by The Death Valley, and it’s just gorgeous and big!

Then we saw the Badwater Basin.

And the Artist’s Palette, amazing colors!

Then Palm Springs is just an amazing little city, and I loved it there :D. Also, crazy weather we got there! It started hailing when we were shopping in Palm Springs – we were wearing flip-flops…

Finally, when we were on our way to Las Vegas, we stopped near Calico, at an amazing place which I totally forgot what it was called, because it was 10 years ago!!! lol.

I really enjoyed this trip 😉 , I hope you enjoyed the photos too.

Wandering About: San Francisco (2014)

wandering about

Because I’m currently reading Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins, which action takes place in San Francisco, I thought it would be a good time to share a few pictures of the city, from when I was there almost 2 years ago.

The trip included a lot more than San Francisco… we went to Las Vegas, then LA and then we went by car to San Francisco, stopping a few times along the way. I’ll share the photos of the other places at some point for sure, but I was already blogging at the time, so I actually wrote posts about that trip: USA 2014: Las VegasUSA 2014: LA and the Central Coast (California) and USA 2014: San Francisco.

In my post about San Francisco – that you can check out here – I talked about how I felt at home there. I did. San Francisco made its way to my Top 5 cities I want to live in, and it has hold its spot. I want to go back there, and each time I read a bout set there, or watch a show or a movie, this feeling intensifies.

Incredibly, SFO has some things that remind me of Lisbon, with the high hills, cable carts and so much water… not to mention that the Golden Gate Bridge is very similar to our own Ponte 25 de Abril. But San Francisco has a certain freedom feel about it. I had no trouble walking around, I love all the shops and restaurants, some that were open 24/7. It felt like a more intimate New York…

Wandering About: Los Angeles (2006)

WOW, look at that! 2006! The first time I was ever in the USA was almost 10 years ago… WOW! Time flies! OK, freak out moment over…

The first time my mom asked me if I wanted to go with her to the US, I jumped at the opportunity. It was a really rough time in my life, probably one of the toughest in my (then) 21 years of life, so I was super on board to just go and get out of my head for a bit. I was working at the time, but my boss was super nice about it and let me compensate my days with my due overtime, I did skip a few days of class, but at that point I didn’t really care. I was on my way to LA! (and Las Vegas and Palm Springs, but that’s for another day)

This was also when I discovered the Cheesecake Factory and all the goods that come with it :D.

And Hollywood!

And Universal Studios :D.

In general, I really liked LA, even if we caught a few terrible days of cold and rain – I hasn’t packed for that. Still, it was pretty freaking amazing. While my mom worked, me and her business partner wandered around Hollywood and took photos of around 100 stars and prints, lol. I even I had an unforgettable experience riding the buses in the city, under rain… never to be repeated again.

Wandering About: New York 2007

Welcome again, to another week of Wandering About. This time, I’ll tell you about my second time in the USA, and my first time in New York City in 2007 (I was there again a couple of years ago 🙂 ).

wa_nyc

Let me tell you, New York is in my top 3 cities in the World! You know when you arrive somewhere and realize “this is a place I could see myself living in”? I got that feeling with just a few cities so far, and my Top 3 is: London, New York and San Francisco.

I went there in 2007 for yet another of my mom’s work conferences. But this time it was an all girls kind of thing, with my sister and my “sister” coming with us. (by “sister” I mean one of my mom’s business associates that looks more like my mother than me and my real sister, and she’s kind of a big sister to us). This trip actually began in Miami, then Orlando, then Atlanta and finally New York, but I’ll share the places in different posts, otherwise it would be too much.

My sister fell ill as soon as we got there, she might have had a stomach flu (I had one while in Atlanta), but she was missing her husband pretty bad by then, and that certainly didn’t help. So while me, mom and big sis were touring around the city, my real sister spent most of her time in the hotel room… what a shame. She tried, poor thing, but then we had to disembark a double decker so she could throw up in Central Park… very glamorous.

We ended up having one of the worst plane rides ever on our way to Portugal, that was not so much fun.

I really love New York. I love that I could walk all over Manhattan, that there was a Starbucks in every corner. Fifth Avenue and Central Park. Broadway and oh, the shows!!! That time we saw Mary Poppins and Chicago, the first one is amazing, people flying and everything, but Chicago was a let down, and I have to say that I think that the movie works way better.

The city has a life of it’s own, like everyone there walks with a purpose… I don’t even know how to explain it…

New York City makes me happy! So tell me, have you been to NYC? Do you like it?

USA 2014: San Francisco

It’s official: I’m in love with San Francisco!

?????????

Have you ever had that feeling that “this is a town I would love to live in” when you get somewhere? It happened to me the first time when I was 13 and I stepped in London for the first time, and that feeling hasn’t changed for all this years… It happened again when I first set foot in New York City in 2007 (and again last year… and when I saw the Empire State Building and The Statue of Liberty from the plane this year). I had that feeling again as soon as we entered San Francisco city lines! This is my kind of city!

?????????

I felt that differences are accepted and judgment has no place. It’s a city surrounded by water, but mainly cold. The buildings are beautiful, and so are the up and down streets. It’s definitely a place I want to go back to, mainly because we just had a couple of days there. We did most of the things you should do: Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Chinatown, Twin Peaks, Alcatraz… We unfortunately didn’t have time to ride a cable cart! But we do have those in Lisbon as well 😉 .

USA 2014: Las Vegas

I’m now more than halfway through my vacation and it has been great. My first stop was Las Vegas, Nevada. After an 8 hour flight from Lisbon to Newark, we had a couple of hours wait and then a 5 and a half hours flight to Las Vegas. A jet lag of 8 hours is something of a pain in the ass!!!!

WP_001729

We stayed at Treasure Island hotel, which was a quite nice experience. The next night we went to “O” from Cirque du Soleil at Bellagio: AMAZING! So far, my favorite Cirque du Soleil show (and I’ve seen a few…). The show is based on water and the acrobatics are out of this world.

O-Cirque-du-Soleil-Bellagio

The next day, after walking around the Venetian and having lunch at Buddy’s, we had a helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon booked, and despite being really windy, we got there, payed, did all the instructions and even begun to get into the helicopter, but in the exact moment that I was getting in, they informed the pilot that the flight was cancelled… the wind had just gotten up from 49 MPH to 50 MPH, which is the limit. The pilot was actually really relieved, he even said that the previous flight felt like ridding a mechanical bull.

??????????

Not being able to fly, we took a gondola ride at the Venetian and then decided to watch a show… at 7 pm the “only” available show was Thunder from Down Under, so we went… if you don’t know which show this is, I’ll give you a hint: it has a lot of hot Australian guys taking their clothes off… So fun!

Then it was over… time to catch a flight to LA…

Psych is out!

It’s today, people! The last episode of Psych!!!

I’m still reacting like Dule, still not sure that this is actually happening! =(

I’m glad, though, that they will go out on top, still, I wish it was at least a full season order for this sad goodbye. It will always be one of the best comedies on TV!
