Dear Bridget, I Want You (Penelope Ward)

Dear Bridget,

I’m writing this letter because it’s highly doubtful I’ll ever garner the courage to say this to your face.

So, here goes.

We’re totally wrong for each other. You’re the proper single mum with a good head on your shoulders. I’m just the carefree British doctor passing through town and temporarily living in your converted garage until I head back to England.

But here’s the thing… for some bloody reason, I can’t stop thinking about you in very inappropriate ways.

I want you.

The only reason I’m even admitting all of this to you right now is because I don’t believe it’s one-sided. I notice your eyes when you look at me, too. And as crass as I appear when we’re joking around about sex, my attraction to you is not a joke.

So, what’s the purpose of this note? I guess it’s a reminder that we’re adults, that sex is healthy and natural, and that you can find me just through the door past the kitchen. More specifically, it’s to let you know that I’m leaving said door cracked open from now on in case you’d like to visit me in the middle of the night sometime.

No questions asked.

Think about it.

Or don’t.

Whatever you choose.

It’s doubtful I’ll even end up sliding this letter under your door anyway.

— Simon

I’ll keep this review very short and on point.

THE POSITIVE:

I loved the plot. Widowed young mother with a younger british doctor. YES PLEASE! And the characters were awesome.

The pacing was great, and the development of the relationship between Simon and Bridget was very well done.

THE NEGATIVE:

The repetition. I’ve read a few books by these two authors, and I always know that at some point I’m getting a twisted issue. It was well done, but you can always see it coming.

Still on the point above, there just wasn’t anything surprising on this book. Still worth it though.

My relationship with Hunter Delucia started backwards.

We met at a wedding — him sitting on the groom’s side, me sitting on the bride’s. Stealing glances at each other throughout the night, there was no denying an intense, mutual attraction.

I caught the bouquet; he caught the garter. Hunter held me tightly while we danced and suggested we explore the chemistry sparking between us. His blunt, dirty mouth should’ve turned me off. But for some crazy reason, it had the opposite effect on me.

We ended up back in my hotel room. The next morning, I headed home to New York leaving him behind in California with the wrong number.

I thought about him often, but after my last relationship, I’d sworn off of charming, cocky, gorgeous-as-sin men. A year later, Hunter and I met again at the birth of our friends’ baby. Our attraction hadn’t dulled one bit. After a whirlwind trip, he demanded a real phone number this time. So I left him with my mother’s — she could scare away any man with her talks of babies and marriage — and flew back home.

I’d thought it was funny, until the following week when he rang the bell at Mom’s house for Sunday night dinner. The crazy, gorgeous man had won over my mother and taken an eight-week assignment in my city. He proposed we spend that time screwing each other out of our systems.

Eight weeks of mind-blowing sex with no strings attached? What did I have to lose?

Nothing, I thought.

It’s just sex, not love.

But you know what they say about the best laid plans…

EXCERPT:

Every time I considered leaving my room, I would grab the framed picture of Ben and stare at it.  The urge to go to Simon was so strong; I basically hadn’t put down the framed photo of my deceased husband in an hour.  I was lying in my bed, holding a picture of a dead man while fantasizing about one who was very much alive and in the other room.  With the door cracked open waiting for me.  There was one part of Simon’s note that I just kept reading over and over.

I want to make you come. Hard. I want you to get lost in me and I want to hear you say my name over and over while we fuck.

While we fuck.

While we fuck.

I was pretty sure that Ben had never used the word fuck like that before.  Did we even fuck?  We made love, sure.  Our sex life was normal — at least, I think it was normal.  Don’t get me wrong, the passion wasn’t the same as when we first got together.  But after ten years, both of us working full time and raising a child, it was normal to have some of the desire dwindle, wasn’t it?

While we fuck.

I looked at the picture of my husband and sighed.  We didn’t fuck.  Not even in the beginning. And I felt guilty for that now.  Maybe we should have been fucking.  I certainly didn’t do anything to entice him to want me the last few years.  Was it my fault our sex life had gotten boring?  I rested the picture of Ben over my heart and laid my hand over it.  I could feel my heart beating out of control beneath my fingers.

Shutting my eyes, I tried to force thoughts of Simon from my mind.  But it was no use.  Visions of his hard, sculpted body hovering over me had infiltrated my brain.  So, here I was, a thirty-three-year-old, single mother lying in my bed all alone with a picture of my dead husband held to my heart while I visualized fucking another man.

Fucking.

Not making love.

I needed my head examined.

After two hours and no sleep in sight, I decided the only way I was going to be able to get any rest was if I got everything I was feeling off of my chest.  Flicking on the light, I carefully set the framed photo of my beloved Ben on my nightstand and then opened the drawer and dug out a pen and piece of pretty stationery.  I would write down my thoughts to clear my mind.  I had no intention of actually giving the letter to Simon, so there was no reason to filter anything I said.

Dear Simon…

Beautiful Mistake (Vi Keeland)

The first time I met Caine West was in a bar.

He noticed me looking his way and mistakenly read my scowling as checking him out.

When he attempted to talk to me, I set him straight — telling him what I thought of his lying, cheating, egomaniacal ass.

You see, the gorgeous jerk had wined and dined my best friend — smooth talking her into his bed, all along failing to mention that he was married.

He deserved every bit of my tongue-lashing and more for what he’d done.

Especially when that lazy smile graced his perfect face in response to my rant.

Only it turned out, the man I’d just told off wasn’t the right guy.

Oops. My mistake.

Embarrassed, I slunk out without an apology.

I was never going to see the handsome stranger again anyway, right?

That’s what I thought…until I walked into class the next morning.

Well, hello Professor West, I’m your new teaching assistant.

I’ll be working under you…figuratively speaking.

Although the literal interpretation might not be such a bad thing — working under Professor West.

This was going to be interesting…

For the past year or so, I’ve been steadily enjoying Vi Keeland’s books, and her collaborations with Penelope Ward, so I was expecting another hit from Beautiful Mistake. Unfortunately, this book turned out to be my least favorite romance by this great author.

I was enjoying this book at first, but then something felt off for me. The main thing that bothered me was Rachel, the main character herself, because while she is a great girl most of the times, when Caine calls her feisty, I would call her a first class bitchy brat.

I’m gonna put stuff into context here. Rachel meets Caine, she then realizes she’ll be his teaching assitant, they’re clearly attracted to each other and they are never really the epitome of professional. But I have to give it to the guy, he tries to keep away, badly, but he tries. He also has a lot to lose if it gets out that he’s interested in a student, even if she’s 25 and a graduate student at that. But everytime things don’t go Rachel’s way, or Caine tries to act a little more cold, she calls him off, she shouts at him, she tries to make him jealous on purpose, she dresses provocative… but the thing is, she does all this at his place of employment! While I could ride the train of a student/teacher relationship, her behaviour inside their class room was a huge NO for me.

Another thing I could not get on board with was the fact that after it was clear that they felt something for each other – though nothing had happened yet – Caine offered to be Rachel’s thesis advisor. And she accepted. While the TA/Teacher relationship I could get on board with, because it was like a boss/employee thing, the advisor/advisee didn’t sit well with me. As a graduate student myself, I know the power flow of that position. And in my opinion is even worse than a student/professor relationship, because that class would only last a semester, while a thesis can last a lot longer. I didn’t like that at all. Mostly because when they got into that arrangement, they already knew how they felt.

I also had a lot of issues with the past stories of the characters. Rachel says at one point that she had very wild teen years, and yet, while the reason can be inferred, the story is never developed. The same with Caine’s past… we have a lot of elements, but nothing is ever tied together. Some things are never explained. I was expecting a better constructed storyline, and to be honest, I was severely disappointed by the lack of the development of the back story.

I’m sorry to say that I wasn’t sold on the romance either. While the chemistry was awesome and there’s no doubt that Keeland can write some fantastic intimate scenes, the romance felt a bit weak, and more based on the attraction than anything else. Another thing I felt needed a bit MORE.

Now, not everything is a negative, I did like the writing style, like always, and I did enjoy the fact that we got dual POV, even though Caine’s POV was more limited than Rachel’s, which was a shame because I felt like he had a stronger voice. And because I listened to the audio version, I have to say again that  Andi Arndt and Sebastian York are the most amazing narrators

I’m really sorry to write such a review today, I love most of Vi Keeland’s books, and I’m so sad I didn’t enjoy this one too. Either way, I’m sure I’ll continue to scarf down anything she writes 😉 .

Have you read Beautiful Mistake? What are your thoughts on it?

August TBR

I did very well with my TBR for last month, and I finished most books there, except for one, that I did start. So, I hope I do as well this month… as I plan to read:

  3. Beautiful Mistake by Vi Keeland

  11. Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies by Michael Ausiello
  12. A Perfect Ten (Forbidden Men #5) by Linda Kage

Have you guys read any of these books? What are your thoughts?

Bossman (Vi Keeland)

The first time I met Chase Parker, I didn’t exactly make a good impression. I was hiding in the bathroom hallway of a restaurant, leaving a message for my best friend to save me from my awful date. He overheard and told me I was a bitch, then proceeded to offer me some dating advice. So I told him to mind his own damn business — his own tall, gorgeous, full-of-himself damn business—and went back to my miserable date.

When he walked by my table, he smirked, and I watched his arrogant, sexy ass walk back to his date.

I couldn’t help but sneak hidden glances at the condescending jerk on the other side of the room. Of course, he caught me on more than one occasion, and winked. When the gorgeous stranger and his equally hot date suddenly appeared at our table, I thought he was going to rat me out. But instead, he pretended we knew each other and joined us — telling elaborate, embarrassing stories about our fake childhood. My date suddenly went from boring to bizarrely exciting.

When it was over and we parted ways, I thought about him more than I would ever admit, even though I knew I’d never see him again. I mean, what were the chances I’d run into him again in a city with eight million people?

Then again… What were the chances a month later he’d wind up being my new sexy boss?

I just know that listening to romances by Vi Keeland will make me happy, and this one was just so darn amazing.

Once again, I absolutely loved the writing, again, and I really liked how, once again, Vi Keeland used the dual POV to give us a peek into the past. The story is mainly told through Reese’s POV, but some chapters belong to Chase, 7 years before, and I loved it. The voices were different, and the narrative flowed super well.

I loved the characters, obviously, I loved how damaged they both were, but how they still trusted and opened up to one another. They just gave such strength to one another, and I loved it. Also, they were beyond hilarious, by themselves and when they were together. Such a delight.

The romance was awesome too. These 2 had amazing chemistry and banter, and even though it is an office romance, the forbidden aspect of it is not  really important, more of the fears that it brought on. But the development and the peak and the resolution, were kind of perfect.

I really like how there isn’t any instalove on this book, the feelings develop slowly, and their relationship is beautiful. And I loved their crazy stories, eheh.

So, yeah, guys, go and read this one.
Or listen to it. You won’t be sorry.

Mister Moneybags (Vi Keeland & Penelope Ward)

I met Bianca in an elevator.

She was on her way to interview me when we got stuck.

The beautiful, raven-haired reporter assumed I was a delivery guy because of the way I was dressed.

She had no clue I was really Dex Truitt, the wealthy, successful businessman she’d dubbed “Mister Moneybags” — her afternoon appointment.

Bianca told me how much she hated Dex’s type — snobby, over educated, silver- spooned men who didn’t appreciate the simple things in life.

So, after the elevator finally started moving again, I cancelled the interview and let her believe I was someone I wasn’t — a bike messenger named Jay. I loved the way she looked at the fake me and didn’t want it to end.

I began dating her as “Jay” — all the while letting her interview the real me over email.

I didn’t expect that our chemistry online would be just as hot.

I didn’t expect the mess I’d gotten myself into.

I didn’t expect that Jay and Dex would fall in love with her.

And she was falling for two men.

Only, both men were me.

And when she found out, we were both going to lose her.

Nothing could have prepared me for that day. And I certainly wasn’t prepared for what came after.

All good things must come to an end, right?

Except our ending was one I didn’t see coming.

I’m a huge fan of the collaborations between these two ladies. They always make me laugh and cry a bit, and I generally have a great time reading or listening to their books. Also, this book was narrated by my 2 favorite narrators out there: Sebastian York and Andi Arndt, and I just love them, they are excellent narrators, and I love Sebastian’s voice… *sigh*

The writing is one again great, I just truly love how they collaborate, and the voices in this book were so different. AWESOME! I mean, I was dying in Dex’s chapters, they were hilarious.

I really liked both main characters, and Bianca and Dex had great chemistry… she and Jay did as well, but I was rooting for Dex, eheh. I have to say that I felt like the blurb was a bit misleading, like they usually are, only letting you know of the plot for the first half of the book. I liked the plot though, even though I thought it was a bit predictable at times, I still quite enjoyed it.

Also, a million points for Chance‘s cameo, his darn goat and his 2 kids. AMAZING! The youtube channel made me snort.

Even though it was not my favorite collaboration between these two girls, this is a very good and solid romance, and I very much recommend it. And definitly try the audio version, because Sebastian York!!!

Egomaniac (Vi Keeland)

The night I met Drew Jagger, he’d just broken into my new Park Avenue office. I dialed 9-1-1 before proceeding to attack him with my fancy new Krav Maga skills. He quickly restrained me, then chuckled, finding my attempted assault amusing.

Of course, my intruder had to be arrogant. Only, turned out, he wasn’t an intruder at all.

Drew was the rightful occupant of my new office. He’d been on vacation while his posh space was renovated. Which was how a scammer got away with leasing me office space that wasn’t really available for rent. I was swindled out of ten grand.

The next day, after hours at the police station, Drew took pity on me and made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. In exchange for answering his phones while his secretary was out, he’d let me stay until I found a new place. I probably should have acted grateful and kept my mouth shut when I overheard the advice he was spewing to his clients. But I couldn’t help giving him a piece of my mind. I never expected my body to react every time we argued. Especially when that was all we seemed to be able to do.

The two of us were complete opposites. Drew was a bitter, angry, gorgeous-as-all-hell, destroyer of relationships. And my job was to help people save their marriages. The only thing the two of us had in common was the space we were sharing. And an attraction that was getting harder to deny by the day.

I’m going to keep this review super short because I sure as hell don’t want to spoil the story for you guys…

I’ve been enjoying the collaborations between Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward, but this one? This was one of my favorite romances from this year. Keeland’s writing is amazing on this one. The book is told in the first person, dual POV, and Emerie and Drew’s voices are super different and they complement each other so well.

I loved both main characters. LOVED THEM!!! They had both such strong personalities and convictions, but they were able to listen to each other and understand one another, and ugh, their relationship and chemistry was just AMAZING.

The book has a few twists and I have to say that I was super surprised that I didn’t see the finish line right from the start. It’s a sign that this romance is super well written. I did see the conflict, but it didn’t make it any less heartbreaking…

This book made me cry, people. It did. And it was awesome.

If you’re looking for a great romance, with an amazing and strong couple, read Egomaniac, you won’t be sorry.
